Well he didnt have it cut and he tried to come to practice and Coach Green turned him around and told him he couldnt be a part of the team.Could we have used him,HECK YEA but we folllowed Coach Green 100%. No one person is above the team and a rule is a rule.
Was his fro neat?
yea but the rule was no arfo or braids and face shaved. shan herring cut his, dominique young cut his, skip jackson cut his,but he didnt and couldnt play cuz he didnt make the deadline
I didn't know Coach Green's rules namely because when I was at Central, no one wore braids.  But they wore flat tops...  And Coach Green did allow that back then...
Let me just say, when you are out on a basketball you are front and center in front of the entire audience.  People judge you as an athlete based on your appearance, grooming, heighth, attitude and skill level.  By having your team look groomed and respectful you take some of the judgement out of the picture, and it gives more time to see the athlete.  I do not know why people have such a hard time letting kids learn self-disicipline.  I would also like to see rules in place that make the boys wear pants that fit, I am tired of seeing rears hanging out on the court. Lead by example people.  People want everything to be easy and freedom of expression, what about team values working for the greater good of the school, team, community and the world. I am just saying.......................By the way I do have a son that plays basketball, and I make him keep a neat haircut, pants that fit, and no sweat bands, no funky socks, and he wears the shoes the team provides.  He is part of the team when he walks on the court, not an indvidual for those 4 quarters.
Your skills are not judged by how you look.  If you have been around any kind of Basketball, you should know that.  the big slioppy looking slow kid may be the high flyer.  So that throws your theory out of the window.  The kids already know self discipline.  They are winning they have good sportsmanship and they do everything they are asked to out of their coach!  (Why is it so hard for folks to understand this concept?) I'm not a fan of 'slabbing' (pants falling off your rear), but i'm also not a fan of those old timing high shorts that comes up the middle of your thigh (seems like that's what you prefer to see).  And sweatbands?  Their for 'sweat'!  Stops the sweat from goign in your eyes.  And you want it to match your uniform.  (I can tell that you have never played a lick of basketball before).  Basketball shoes?  If the team provides them, then so be it.  If he wants another pair of shoes, they will  need to be the color of the shoes the team provides.
 6. Who said I didn't go for Silsbee?  I did say that they will beat H-J.  And besides.  My team is 4a...  Tigers are 3a...  and these teams will not play each other this year...
 7.
Aggiearewe why do you even waste the time to type talking to some of these people. Sounds to me its a bunch of outsiders wanting to start crap with the Silsbee community. Don't waste your time trying to explain what's been written in a Enterprise article.
I've spoken my say on the issue and have been finished.  but it's you that flew on here keeping it going.  And as far as an 'outsider', I'm in Silsbee way more than you think...
 8.
i agree with coach T . thats why in  this society we have teenagers do what they do no discipline.coach T im behind you 100% keep up the good work you have a very good program in silsbee.
You obviously didn't read the prior 6 pages... These kids do EVERYTHING right.  But you're talking about they need discipline...

Rideaux (Ozen WR) went there
So did Collins from Central....
yep, i forgot about him
Now in the NFL getting a lot of burn!
 10.
I will say this and AAW will agree........Dayton is NOT very good!!!  HJ could have easily won by the 25-30 but played deep into the bench for most of the 4th!!!
8) 8)  Congrads on the win.  I've just been in an argumentive mood lately...  ;D ;D
 11.
Soulja..........HJ led by 22 and put the reserves in.  Did you listen to the broadcast??? HJ also was below .500 from the FT line and below .400 from the field against a decent at best Dayton team!!!
Nope, didn't listen to the broadcast.  Can't listen on this particular computer.  I was just proving a point... to that one fan...

(even though we all know that the scrimmages are pretty much meaningless)
Yes, and this was when the Dayton football team were still playing. Their athletes are on the court now.  But I'm sure you and the homer already knew that...
HJ won by 16 and it was never in doubt
Yep.  The #1 homer predicted an ridiculous 27 point blowout and the score ended up being a 16 point one.  Is that a blowout?  ::)  Just saying...

 14. These young men have been beastin all year and proved they deserve a change to play at the next level for a big school.  I also wil follow these young men on Saturdays... Congrads!

I would not like the long braids, since they could pull on them when the ref isn't looking.  But if this is a rule that the head coach has made, my son would abide by it.
I agree ;)
Ditto...
 18.

Joe Sigler had this in effect for Silsbee back in the 80's and 90's. You could wear a nice and neat afro but no braids. People get real! If you want to work or play for anyone you have to abide by their rules. If you don't like try and find something else to do. Travis is trying to help mold these young men to accept dicipline. Its a freaking hair cut! If your a great athelete, you will cut your hair to get under team ploicy. If a parent is more concerned about this than their kids grades or chance at a higher education this would be sad.
Actually your discipline comes from arriving to practice on time, hustling on and off the court, running lines or suicides, etc, etc, bah-hhhh!!! ;) Kids aren't stupid. They wear that same  hair on life's broader stages: to class, church, in the community, etc.
Excellent point...

Hasnt effecting anything in the past?  He has had the rule for 7 years.  Wanted to extend his idea on down to the 7th/8th grade.  Great idea. What kind of message does dreadlocks, afros, long shaggy hair have.  Usually an unprofessional look.  A look of disorganization, exactly the opposite of what you want for your team.  If a player likes his hair more than playing ball then dont play.  This is not a racial issue. Why do some want to try to make it one.  The message he wants to send is of organization, uniformity, professionalism.  Something the kids need for basketball and for life.   And there are only a few Pro athletes I would want my children to have as role models.  There are so many more people deserving role model status by our youth.
They have it in the NBA and doesnt affect anything. This is not a job interview its basketball. This not going to determine world peace or the next president. That gets a COME ON MAN!!!! You should be the role model to your kids and not basketball players. Im a black man myself and I dont think its a race issue I just feel that individuals(Thats right individuals) should chose what they want to do with their hair. WE ARE A DEMOCRACY IN THE USA RIGHT?
Of course, we practice democracy. But there are a number of organizations within the democracy wherein individuals are asked to put aside their freedom of expression to be part of the unit, both in in the public and private sector.  The way I see it, Coach Williams is asking each and every one of the players in his organization a question from the very outset that he in some way or another asks them in every practice and every game.  That question is "Are you willing to put your team first and your individuality last?"  Is any coach in a team sport to be faulted for asking that of his players?
Grad, I see what your saying. And I'm not brushing that asside.  But we're not talking about a rowdy bunch or a couple of street thug punk kids.  We're talking about kids that do the right thing.  They are a good team and they win ball games.

It's still a choice.
They are being forced to cut their hair!
8) 8)
