  1. I agree.... Trinity River to the east, include Bolivar, and then up north to Jasper. This website rightly includes the districts that are adjacent to this border. Don't forget, you may be getting some Livingston fans joining up this summer due to the geographically dense UIL committee that formed the new districts.
  2. Excellent point Tiger.... As a teacher it is sad that we are at the point we are with no child left behind. Although the premise is outstanding, it is not "realistic". Basically ANY STUDENT in public education is put on a colllege prep track. ALL students now must pass 4 math, 4 english, 4 science, and 4 social studies to graduate. What the legislatures need to realize is that not ALL students are college material, and if you are lucky enough to get to college only 1 out of three college freshmen graduate. Texas MUST put in a dual tracking system for all districts. One track for college prep (the curriculum that exists now) and one track for vocational training. One more thing.... The drop out rate for high school students is WAY UNDER reported. Would be interesting to see how many freshmen are in Texas and see how many of them graduate in 4 years. The state average would be way more than 25% if the drop out rate was reported this way. This is one of the reasons why Sam Houston high school was shut down. There just wasn't that many kids graduating AND the TAKS scores were unacceptable.
  3. That is sad that funds earned by the school from Friday night have been mishandled... Just curious.... Friday night football is easily the #1 money making activity hosted by the school district (for most 4A and 5A schools that can pack in over 5,000 each home game). Is that money put into the "general" fund of the school district, or is it kept seperate in the athletic budget? There is no telling how much PNG made from the dynasty in the 70's. I was told that a lot of the cash earned from those games was used to help build the new science wing. When you get down to it... The school board is probably the elected body that decides what happens to these funds earned by the student athletes.
  4. Come on now man, average maybe. No Jacob Bowling is Average but Tony Carmona is OUTSTANDING if your from dayton come Watch Barbers Hill Match up with Dayton . It will be a GREAT game not to mention close It will be a great game, but "close". The closest the score board will be is when the ball is kicked off in the first quarter to open the game. The Broncos will be running loose all night long. Dayton wins this game easily by 4 touchdowns.
  5. What makes this sad is if you have a school district like North Forest, where you have DECADES of an imcompetent school board which bankrupts the school district. The real losers in that district isn't the school board, but the kids. All school board members need to keep the students and their ACADEMICS as the #1 factor in all their decisions.
  6. Amen... How often do we forget this on this "sports" forum... I don't know of any particulars from this school, but you have to assume the principal and the teachers did all they could to improve the students. In the end, you get what you pay... As a teacher with 18 years of experience it is sad that districts continue to raise the starting salaries of teachers, but still don't have the finances to pay veteran teachers what they are worth. Over the last three years several close friends of mine (quality veteran teachers) have left the profession for higher paying occupations. The starting salaries can attract good teachers, but the schools need the finances to keep paying the teachers what they are worth. With the current tax structure this just isn't possible. You can also say this for all public servants, not just teachers. We should all be thankful that almost all schools in the Beaumont area are at least acceptable and are doing what they are supposed to, educating the kids.
  7. Will be a great addition to the facilities... Any chance of the fieldhouse still being named after Higgins?
  8. As a LU athletic trainer graduate..... Congrats Ashley!!! Enjoy Beaumont and the Golden Triangle area. Also... Enjoy this August WITHOUT 2 A Days......
  9. The sad thing in all of this is that the community adults are failing the kids. The kids have several uphill battles to fight in that school district. The whole situation is just not acceptable. You really have to feel for the kids. Hopefully things will improve with the merging of the two schools.
  10. Obama High School (13 votes) Unbelievable!!! A US Senator from Illinois gets 13 votes! The people in that school district probably would have wanted to reelect Marion Barry in DC or even Nagin in New Orleans. It's a wonder they couldn't even run the finances of the school district. That being said... Education is ALL about the kids, not the adults and the alums that run the schools. Hopefully, for the kids sakes in that district, things will improve not only athletically, but more importantly academically.
  11. As long as we have a lot of good recruits, local or not, and we win, there will be people. This has to be done right, and limiting your talent pool to local kids is not the way to go. Get the BEST you can get from WHERE EVER they will come. Lamar will get its share of the local talent, but the exceptional talent will continue to go to the "Big" schools. This is what hurt the football program in the 80's... You can't assume the best of the best talent in the golden triangle will want to play at Lamar. Given the options, if a kid has a chance of playing at UT, or A&M, or Oklahoma, or stay and play at Lamar, unless he is a momma's boy, he is going to go away. As a member of the Lamar football team in it's last year of existence, I believe given one more year, Alborn would have had a winning season. We did have local talent, but it was the best of the local talent. The bottom line is that all the alums need to get behind Woodard and support the program. I may live on a teachers salary, but I will budget money for season tickets. To all those at Lamar involved in this process... GOOD LUCK!!
  12. The new coach has succeeded in all levels of football... Corrigan Camden in the late 70's was AWEsome. All American at Kilgore. Played pro football for 5 years, won a super bowl ring. I think Lamar has found a "diamond" in the rough. GOOD LUCK TO WOODARD!!! GO BIG RED!!!
  13. Getting the ground ready for the rest ALWAYS takes longer... Same in any construction. Look at highways.... It takes forever to move the dirt in, but once they have the groundwork finished, the rest will go quickly. The key is... Finishing all the ground work while the weather is good. If we have a rainy summer before they can pour the concrete, it won't help. As for me... Dayton has an open week the same week PN-G plays Texas City at home. I sure hope that game is played. Would love to see the Indians play at the new reservation.
  14. Where? Congrats John... never ever forget.... ALWAYS BELIEVE!!!
  15. The big question mark to me will be receiver... If AJ is the only big threat at receiver, teams will double and maybe triple team him. Anybody know the depth chart at receiver??? Also... Who is at the top of the chart at running back. If the Broncos can plug in two quality players at these positions, they will be tough to beat. Kind of scary... But the defense could be even better than last year. The Broncos might just have a little bit more overall speed than last year. That is kind of scary.
  16. Unfortunately... I was a senior at PN-G on the field... What a horrible night.... As for me.... The greatest game I ever saw was the PN-G vs TJ game in 1980. One of the largest crowds ever at the Reservation.. and again... unfortunately... PN-G lost 14 - 13.
  17. i'd have to say dayton vs. crosby, more like the love between the cowboys and redskins. lol ;D does not even come close to PN-G vs Nederland... Trust me... Unless you have been involved in the PN-G vs Nederland game you just don't understand how intense that week is. No other rival comes close to the fan level, intensity of play, and the just the overall atmosphere of what makes Friday Night Lights something that Texas can be proud of doing the best. Another way to ask this question.... If you had someone from over seas come in for a visit and want to see what Friday Night Lights is all about, what game would you take them to.... If you can get tickets, the PN-G vs Nederland game is tops. As for my Dayton (my other favorite purple and white team).... Dayton vs Crosby is the top game for the Broncos, unfortunately the cougars can't make a game out of it... Ever since I moved to Dayton in 1992 I have so wanted for the Broncos to line up against the Hill.... IMO.... The most anticipated game of the season for Dayton will be versus Barbers Hill... With so many kids living next to each other in the southern part of Dayton ISD, if this game continues for many years, it could evolve into the biggest rival between Houston and Beaumont.
  18. Nolan Ryan throws 7th no hitter..... What is more likely never to be broken... The strike out number, or the 7 no hitters..... The 7th no hitter (IMO) is the greatest baseball record in my 41 year old lifetime. here is a pretty good article... [Hidden Content] I figured, as an interesting way to talk about some historical events in sports, I would do an article on an event that occurred today in sports, May 1. Nolan Ryan, one of the greatest pitchers of all-time, pitched his seventh no-hitter on this date 17 years ago. It is a extraordinary achievement to pitch one no-hitter, but to pitch seven, that's unreal. With a combination of hard-thrown fastballs and equally as effective off-speed stuff, the 44-year-old Ryan baffled Toronto Blue Jays hitters all night. To be 44 years old and still pitching in the majors is a feat in itself, but to still be the most prolific pitcher in the game made Ryan another species. The "Strikeout King" lived up to his billing that night, tossing 16 K's, including gassing Roberto Alomar with 93-mile-per-hour heat to end the game. His longevity defied all odds. "There is always somebody who defies the odds," Blue Jays Joe Carter said after the game. "For baseball, it is him [Ryan]." In an age when we are worried if Randy Johnson, 44, can even throw an extra inning or two to get his team to the bullpen, Ryan was still dominant and overpowering. The importance of this event goes to show that even some players go beyond what is normal, and Ryan was one of the few (the only other coming to my mind would be Satchel Paige). Another spectacle from the night was that Ryan upstaged another record, which otherwise would have been in the spotlight: Rickey Henderson breaking Lou Brock's stolen base record. Both Ryan and Henderson, some of the best the game has ever seen, went into the history books together that night. May 1, 1991 was truly quite the day in baseball history, setting two incredible marks.
  19. The parking at Dayton is no different than that of Nederland, or even PN-G. It's basically neighborhood parking. Even with the new parking lot behind the home stands, it's no where no large enough to accomadate 5,000 fans. I do believe there are long range plans to build a field house and add more parking to the west end of the end zone. The school now owns all the land from the stadium to HWY 146.
  20. One thing Tiger has never done... Come from behind going into a Sunday to win a Major...
  21. Berry Center was designed to be a mini Rice Stadium. All the stadium is between the 10 yard lines, eliminating the goal line seats. The double deck is added to offer a better view point from the top rows. This is by far the best high school football facility in this part of the state. Stallworth is nice, and it seats more, but the double deck gives Berry Center a little more of an edge. Lamar's stadium is at an automatic disadvantage with the largest sulfuric acid plant in the world located right across the railroad tracks from the stadium. No matter how nice they design the stadium, the refinery just doesn't add to the "scenery". Having said this... I did enjoy the home games at Lamar (back when they had football). The overall design of the stadium is nice. The Montagne Center was a good fill in for the north endzone and does block a north wind on that side of the field. If they are going to add on, it would be nice to add an endzone section on the south end so you would have a tunnel for the teams to go out on the field. When Lamar did play football there, the field was in excellent shape. Will be interesting to see how they redo the stadium.
  22. A few hundred more than we have now. They removed the endzone bleachers and adding to both ends of the home side. The capacity of the old stadium was 12,500
  23. Looks like Longview will be playing Barbers Hill instead.
  24. Celtics winning 3rd quarter big by dominating the paint. Celtics playing like they are the best team in the NBA. Can the Rockets stay close???
