  1. And I also agree that the teams in the district play hard and are scrappy, but that alone is not a sign of good basketball.  I just simply do not see alot of strong players or teams in this district. The top 3 teams will be out of the playoffs pretty quickly.
I agree with what meadowlark said and I have reiterated in other posts.  It all comes down to winning most of your games at home and stealing a few on the road.
What will be critical is that whatever teams want to make the playoffs come prepared every night.  You can not play a game in this district and think it is a gimme game.
Center, Hudson, Jasper, Central, Huntington, Diboll, will all fight it out and Kirbyville will pick up a few and may be a spoiler.
  2. I dont know if the Region is down, 21 3A or cleveland will probably represent us at state, but I know for sure that 18-3A is the weakest I have seen it in 10-12 years or longer.  Very weak. This is the chance for some teams to sneak in the playoffs and put a feather in their hat.  22-2A is a tougher district than 18-3A. IMO
  3. Center wins the district.
Jasper, Hudson, Huntington, Central, Diboll will all fight it out.  They will all be hard to beat each other at home. I dont see any out of these 5 being a clear favorite except Hudson and Jasper may have a slight advantage and Huntington is not bad when they play a good game.  It comes down to winning the games you are suppossed(maybe 1-2 losses) at home, and stealing a couple you are not suppossed to on the road.
You are right, the district is the weakest I have seen in 10-12 years.  It is there for someone to get in.
  4. Shephard is not very good at all.  If the game is at Woodville it will be 25-30 or more, if at Shephard it will still be a 18-22 point win for Woodville.
Woodville has played alot of 3A schools and beat them. Central Heights and Woodville would both make the playoffs in alot of 3A districts. Their district will leave 1 or 2 teams out that could be playoff teams.
Just pair the top 6 in 22-2A to 18-3A.
CH, Woodville, SA, Woden, Corrigan Camden, Newton
Center, Jasper, Hudson, Huntington, Central, Diboll
Woodvile has already beat some teams in that district.
CH has also beat some teams in that district.
SA has beat some teams in that district.
Woden could play with any of them.
  5. They should be fine then.  Surely they can stop one player.  He may get a few but if that is all they have then it will be tough for Hudson to win, escpecially at Huntington.  This is Huntingtons year to get in if they want it, the district is down and they have their chance.  They need to get over the hump and it will help for the years to come.  I dont know if they can beat Center or Jasper, they may be able to.  To me the trick for Huntington getting in is winning on the road at Central, Diboll, Hudson and maybe at Jasper and Center.  But definetly have to beat the others at their place. I think they will beat them at home but it will be a game at Hudson, Central, and Diboll.  Take care of Kirbyville at both places which I think is very likely.
  6. Ya, like then didnt even want to try and catch up.  They may be just playing for the future and not putting alot into this year.  But idk.  Huntington got the win so good.  The hudson/hj game must have been a good one.  I did not think it would  be that close escpecialy at HJ.  And from the score box, I know the Davis kid does most of their offense but they had 3 or 4 that almost got double digits in scoring. That worries me a little for Huntington.
  7. Both teams may be ready for the Christmas break.  They need to get them a couple of days and then get ready for district.
No look, how did Big Sandy look?  I heard they were very young but had some decent players.  What was so uncharateristic about your statement is that Big Sandy, to me anyways, has always been a very scrappy get after you team and it sounds like both teams just went through the motions last night.
  8. Jasper played a 2-3?  I hope they dont against Huntington, it will not be in Huntingtons favor.  I bet they will think they can pressure Huntington so they will play them tight man the entire game.  Anyway, good win,  that 3rd quarter is so improtant.  You almost have to treat it as a seperate game.  You have to come out the 3rd quarter more agrressive that at any point during the game.  I have seen it too many times, when either a team was leading big at half and came out slow and allowed the other team back in it, and saw it where it was a close game and the team, like Silsbee last night, came out the second and pulled away.  I bet they did it in the first 4 minutes of the 3rd.  Anyway good win for Silsbee on the road.
  9. I have seen them twice as well.  They play hard at times but do not play hard all of the time.  That is why I suspect when they were playing Newton they let them back in the game.  They had them down about 15 at halftime and I left about the end of 3rd and I understand that Newton made a run and got back in the game.  Newton is not very good.  Very athletic but as far as basketball goes they are not that good.  Secondly, Woodville never did anything on offense that was impressive.  They were beating Newton and Jasper because they were better basketball players.  The Newton game through 3 quarters, I probably saw 25 turnovers for Woodville, that is something a coach can control and should if they want to go very far.  In the Jasper game it was the same 25-30 turnovers for the entire game.  My personal opinion of basketball is that a team should keep their turnovers to below 12.  Doing the math, that is almost 40 points left out there just in turnovers.  I have been an advocate of Woodville on this board and everyone has their own opionion of what good basketball should look like.  Most think coaches are doing an overwhelming job if they just get their team to play hard, which in itself is an opinion. The games I saw Woodville did not play as hard as I thought they could nor were they as undercontrol as they should have been.  That is my opinion.  Also, I thought you said records spoke for themselves.  If that is your case, then you shouldnt have anything else you want to add, their record says it all.  Once again, I am not trying to bash a coach, I have not walked in his shoes. I just know what I saw and I know that records do not speak for theirselves.  That is a blanket statement that is just untrue. Coaches can control at least 2 things at the Varsity level, controlling the ball and how hard a team plays.  I didnt see that from the two game I watched even though they won.  I wish Woodville the best the rest of the year.
  10. Much closer than I expected.  I expected Silsbee by 30.  What I was saying is that if you get to 20-25 points, most coaches will try and keep it in that area and get the win, still playing hard but resting your best, and I know Silsbee is deep.  And a week off is a VERY GOOD thing to have a this time of year.  Do you realize they start district pretty soon.  It is time to make final prepartions in practice, like new stuff that you have not shown so far and to give your players a much needed rest if they have already played 12-15 games.  Most coaches do this to let the players heal for injuries and let them get their legs back under them.  Esseintally half the season is over for most teams and they will skip a Tuesday game to give the players a chance to get their grades in check, bodies healed, and bodies rested.  Common coaching practice.  I would imagine other coaches in the Region will do the same pretty soon.  I do not think, not playing one Tuesday game is going to make you rusty.  I think Jasper is pretty good and Silsbee had to play them at Jasper and the matchup was favorable for a game with Jasper.  Neither teams have any real big bodies.
