1. 20-4A is going to be rough next year, especially if Dayton is thrown in the mix....

I too questioned why no representation was there for an exceptional team. However i read the article and when I got to this paragraph it all made sense to me... "Vidor deserves special mention here too. The Pirates are not considered for Super Team recognition because Vidor is not part of The News circulation area." Its a great write up and some extraordinary young men in the article I wish them the best.
Yeah but have you wondered why they don't consider us in part of The News circulation area? I mean they have WOS players, BC players, Nederland players, Ozen players. We are right in the middle of that. Why don't they consider us?
I think they do not deliver in Vidor. I don't see them in the gas stations and I don't think they end up in driveways. I do not believe Vidor is being picked on, if that is what your getting at.
Agreed, they don't circulate in Vidor. Not worth thinking about, IMO. We were well represented by the Orange Leader and the Beaumont Enterprise is the same joke it has always been. I'm waiting for the Vidorian Super Gold team to come out. We'll get the definitive answer on this then....
Thanks SoulJa, appreciate the words. You always have been the voice of reason on the boards and supportive of all the kids. Now, quit trying to steal our coaches to Beaumont. Nederland already has done that to us....
It was bound to happen sooner or later. English was determined to get back to Nederland to coach his boys.  I'm glad for him that it happened early enough to where he could make an impact for his boys to thrive under his program.
Yeah, we knew it was gonna happen sooner or later as well. Just sour grapes because we couldn't keep him but I understand. Brian is a great guy and ya'll are extremely fortunate to have him. I believe Larry Sterling is gonna do a fine job with the Pirates who are already showing a lot of improvement.
 4.
The goal of an offense is to score more points than their opponent scores. A good defense should be able to shut or slow down any type of offense, including the spread. The talent the coach has to work with usually determines what type of offense they run. I prefer a team to be able to operate more than one type of offense. After all is said and done, the team with the best coaching, the most talent, the desire to win, fewest key injuries, and a lot of luck usually wins, no matter what schemes they run on offense or defense.
Turnovers and clock management as well. IMO, the key to beating the spread is keeping the opposing team's offense off the field by eating up the clock with your offense, but I'm extremely biased about that.
 5. BMTSoulJa1, I'm gonna agree with you on this one....Stump left for a better opportunity. IMO, who wouldn't move to a more affluent district with a big pay raise. I'm a supervisor with the big, stinky company on the east side of Beaumont and I can tell you never make a lateral move in business if you can help it. If Jeff Mathews told me he got the job, I would have told him "congratulations, you deserve it" and then doubled down on the Xanax to get over the deep depression that would set in. The same thing happened to you when Donald Stowers left Central. Stowers got a better offer and had to leave. You cried kitty tears all over the place; we could hear you on this side of the Neches. The BISD has issues but it manages three separate schools; it isn't a one horse town like Nederland, Vidor, PNG etc. Certainly, one school is gonna feel slighted over the others. When the people of Beaumont, in particular the supporters of WB, get serious about the affairs of that school, it will change. Were I a WB fan, I would become very vocal about and involved as much as I can with the BISD school board to influence their decision as much as possible. Can't complain if you sit on the sidelines.....
 6. I believe the brother who is coaching at BC is Chris. I still stand by my earlier statement. Don't know what BC pays but I'm sure it would be more than an underling position at Atascocita. Personally, I just wouldn't want to answer to my brother.

 8.
awww the beauty of past victories  ::) I wont even bring up what happened the first game this year. Congrats Coach Sterling on getting this team going in the right direction.
I didn't make the dig, blueduck did, I just answered it. The only thing I wanted to do was congratulate our kids on a game well played. Only one senior on the team, the rest are juniors and sophs with a brand new head coach.

Wonderful teamwork, good passing, good defense. Growing, growing, growing......
::) ::) ;D
gotta love the haters.  ::)
We strummed his basketball team four times last year. He's enjoying the only year he has for HF to beat Vidor in anything. And that's slowly fading away......
 10. I honestly can't see Craig taking his brother with him to Atascocita. Why would you want to leave a head coaching position at a great 3A school to be an assistant under your brother???
 11. Great game last night Pirates!!! Wonderful teamwork, good passing, good defense. Growing, growing, growing......
 12. Da OC was TUFF this year. Everyone else better stay west of the Neches.....
Maybe the Vidor coach will apply ;)
Why, so he can wreck his career? Vidor, at this point, has better facilities, a school board and administration that more straight laced, and much better pride and community support. Stay in Vidor, Coach Matthews. ;)
What does the 'School Board' have to do with wins/losses on the football field?
I'll jump in on this one. First, Jeff Mathews is the third highest paid coach in the area and that's not counting his stipends. His wife is from Vidor and his children attend Vidor's recognized and exemplary schools. Bridge City tried to woo Jeff away four years ago and he stayed with the Pirates for several obvious reasons, some listed above. If BC couldn't get him, why would he want to jump into a nightmare situation when he essentially is a minor god in Pirateland? And, last I checked, he coached a team that went three rounds deep last year with most of its' team returning. Lastly, I'm  a pretty good shot with a deer rifle and you'll get stopped at the Neches River bridge with your proposal. How about this one, why not have some of those WB kids transfer to Vidor, attend a great school system and play for a great coaching staff with the best fan base in the area? Try that one on!! GO PIRATES!!!
 14. Congratulations Mason on a great year!!! One of my favorite towns in Texas!!!
 15. Congratulations to all the young men who made this team. To second what vp32 said, extremely proud to see Montana made the all-state Honorable mention team. I expect more of the same from this fine young man his senior year!
 16.
There might be those on this link who are, well, not really dealing with reality....to say that Vidor is a dark horse or might make some waves in 20-4A isnt dealing with reality.  That said, the Pirates did look much improved against HF.  HF is a good team, but would probably be on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs were concerned in 20-4A. I think at the start of the season most people who knew the Pirates would have predicted a 15 win season as being successful, so there are no illusions from those who know the situation. Lets be pretty clear here, the Pirates graduated 9 kids off of last years team and returned just one player with any varsity experience.  The Pirates know how tough the district is and they know all about expectations.  I expect the Pirates to play everybody hard and I expect them to grow as a team.  Those of us that know the program knew that this was going to be a very tough year, but also knew that better days were coming.  Besides, the game isnt played here, but on the court, so you just never know, the Pirates might actually surprise a team or two in 20-4A.  I promise you those kids wont ever take the court expecting to lose.  Man, ya gotta love that attitude.
Well put and we're a very young team.

BTW, they put Livingston in our district, go figure. Heck, they may send Crosby over here next. Try to figure out the UIL....
 19. When HJ community decides to get behind the football program, it will happen. Seems to me they made a conscious decision to be a basketball first school sometimes back. Even during our glory basketball years of '02 - '06 lovingly refered to as the "English Years", most Vidorians still yearned for football. We're only putting about 50+ people in the stands for basketball right now but we haven't had any home games. Jeff Mathews and the coaching staff delivered and we put 8000+ on our side of the field for every playoff game. People do laugh when there is talk about us wanting to emulate Nederland but it's the truth; they have a successful athletic program because they have a great athletic director who has been in place for a long time and he cares about the kids and the community. That's the key; good AD and a community that's behind him.
 20. Gotta go with Smokin Baby and his alter egos. C'mon guys, he has a thread 23 pages long and counting. The Ant Hill needs to win at something....
 21.
This has nothing to do with the 'school board' or 'higher ups' like some of you are trying to imply.  This have to do with a few punk kids that got caught doing stupid stuff.  They were dismissed and taken care of accordingly.  They have been weeded out and the team have won their ensuing game.  So, obviously, the Ozen basketball team (the good ones left) will be fine and have moved forward.
I agree.
