Orangefield board votes to keep football coach

A quote from Coach Ed Peveto, "Don't put down his coaches. Remember the coach represents the "boss", the "authority", the "parent", the "teacher", the "law". If you are constantly bad-mouthing your son's coaches, how can you expect the youngster to play for them. You are teaching him to be a complainer, not a doer." - This is #3 in Coach Ed Peveto's 10 commandments for championship parents which was printed in many of his programs, including his state championship run! -
In a previous thread, Bobcat05 said that when he was in school, they were allowed to work on basketball some days during athletics. This seemed to benefit them since they ended up going to the playoffs for the 1st time in decades. I also believe at that time, the football team had gone a couple rounds deep in the playoffs. My question is, did allowing them to work on basketball 2-3 days a week, divide the school and the program. How many football teams did the have? Did kids want to quit football since basketball was getting to get better at skills. I guess I just don't understand why this would be so bad.
No it did not because no one really knew what was going on. Again we let the coaches and teachers do their job and never questioned them. -

Bobcat05 will tell you that every kid on that team had their role and that is why they won. Plain and simple. -
First off the football team went 0-10, so what you heard is incorrect. That basketball team of 05 had a good coach for starters and they matured as young men. Did them practicing before the season improve them? I don't think so, They played as a team that is what helped them. They had never won at any level before. I know because my son was on that team and one of the ones that did not play football. Skill's are learned at a young age like in little dribblers not in high school. Until Huck got here Orangefield had not had a winning football season since 05 actually it was the 04 football season. When ever you have parents in the stands hollering at their kid to shoot the ball there will never be the team concept like the team of 05 (Basketball). The parents on that team let the coach do his job. Its not that bad if everone is on the same page. It has alway's been about the team. Some people have lost focus of that. -

I don't even have a dog in this hunt but I for one am 100 percent behind coach Huck. He runs his program simular to way Ed Peveto did and that is just what those young men need. Its funny because I have heard that he does not have compassion and then I hear another side that say's he is awesome and they owe a lot to this man. Well I can tell you that there was a lot of young men that still live by the lessons that Ed Peveto taught us. I feel Huck has the same effect on the young men who will listen instead of listening to everything their parents tell them. Coach Peveto had a luxury that coach Huck does not. Back then people may not of liked Coach Peveto but they backed him 100 percent and so did the school board and Aministration. Of course those were different times and I understand that. Is coach Huck and Coach Peveto the same? No they are not but they both teach lessons you cannot learn in a classroom. That is worth its weight in gold to me. This former Bobcat believes in Coach Huck. If the kids from a small school like Orangefield start specializing in one sport the program as a whole is doomed. By having a class for basketball and baseball players, the next thing you know they will want a class for every single sport. Not very realistic. Would also like to say glad the board denied the greivance against Coach Jost. To the people of Orangefield you could have a lot worse. I also realize that board members is a voluntary job that not many want. I know I have said somethings I should not have but I am man enough to say I do appreciate the job they do even though I don't agree sometimes. Orangefield is going through a rough time right now but in the end everything will be OK. It always is. Because no matter what we are still a community that is tight knit. -

The basketball team will never compete on a regular bases, football team, track or baseball team. It will be a hit and miss for years to come. Some people will say why post this? The kids will read this, so what it is the truth. The kids should use this as motivation to prove me wrong. Getting a class for basketball or baseball will make no difference. All it will do is make more kids specialize in one sport which will kill a football program at a 3A school. Yes Silsbee and HJ have a basketball class and their basketball teams are successful no doubt, but what about their football teams? HJ enough said, Silsbee well they make the palyoff's every year but they are average at best. If you concede to one program another will suffer. Is there a solution don't know. All I know is coach huck may not be the most personable coach but he is proven winner. No matter what AD Orangefield brings in it will make no difference and the numbers will not grow. People will gripe and complain no matter what. If the board members think getting rid of coach Huck will solve their problems you are sadly mistaken. Good luck is all I can say.
I think you are wrong calling Silsbee football "average". They are better than average.
Making the playoffs mean nothing these days. Just a patch on the jacket.
Well, some results from the first meeting which was a grievance meeting against the girls athletic program. That grievance was denied by the OISD. Now in the second meeting, the board is in executive session.
Really happy about that. Good job school board and OISD.

So what college's have had her come in on an official visit? She could fit in really well at quite a few colleges
I agree with your assessment Dove Hunter. The type of colleges after her will determine her true ranking.
Ciara should have signed something by now? Has she?
To be fair & not mean-spirited, I see a lot of the women's NCAA games from JuCo, NAIA to D-1. I think she might sign up in the Region 14 South JuCo league, maybe.
I agree, I think she is good basketball player and I have seen a lot of talent over the years but she is Juco at best and that is not a bad thing. Those Juco scholarships are just as good. 2 years of having your college paid for is awesome and they do pay for everything. Not many girls from this area get D-1 scholarships or scholarships at all in basketball. The talent is simply not here at this day and time. -

It is not very good and has not been for a very long time. I am a track guy I know. Some of our track records still stand today and "WILL" never be broken.
Well, I don't know what other track records at Orangefield are "Eye-popping" but you guys did turn out some distinguished pole vaulters for several years. 8)
Come on "Voice" I graduated in 1980 and a lot of records still stand. How about 1:52.9 800 meters (Bradley Peveto) 14.0 110 highs (Ricky Pence) 1600 meter Relay 3:21.2. I would say those are pretty salty. District champs in track 1980, 81,82 83. Ed Peveto knew the key to a good football program was a good track program. Just go ask our neighbors from WOS. Like you have ever seen the track records. Also we hade 6 guys that could run a 2:04 800 meters. Also 48:00 400 meters ( Jeff Granger)

I realize that times change. When I was in school at Orangefield we did offseason football during basketball, track and baseball season. Not saying it was fair but just the way it was. Just to show you how things have changed. The preachers son play football and Big Ed grabbed him on the sidelines and kind of pushed him to show him something well the preacher did not like that so the next day he went to talk to big Ed. He walks in his office with out knocking. Big Ed told him to walk back outside and knock before you come into my office. So the preacher did, he sat down and they begin to talk. The talk was good at first. Ed was trying to tell his side of the story and he could see he was getting nowhere with the preacher so finally he stopped looked at the preacher and said " you stick to preaching and I will stick to coaching" now get out of my office. LOL!!!!! good old days!!!!!

Here is exactly the way the workouts are since you are interested. During FB season- Mon-Weight workout-No max Tues-Speed workout- run 200's Wed-Bobcat Buiilders Thurs-Game prep-Off season kids weight workout Fri-Game Day No make up days After FB Season Basketball- Mon-Max on all weights Tues game day/Must make up work out missed Wed-Bobcat builders/weight workout makeup- no practice Thurs- Weight workout Fri-game day-Subvarsity workout Baseball- same as basketball The reason- It takes much more prep time for a football game than a basketball or baseball game. So the basic arguement here is that it is not football so it can't be as hard. Talk to any successfull baseball or basketball coach and ask if it is the same kind of workout for any sport.
If a workout is missed during football season you DO have to make it up. Also I believe you are wrong on the bobcat builder day they do have practice afterwards. So what you are saying is that you are mad because football doesn't play on Tuesday which means they don't have to make up a workout, while basketball and baseball do. Ask any successful football coach, or anyone that has played the sports, football is much more taxing on your body than baseball or basketball is...
Very True and so is track.

Don't know if you are responding to my post are not Wildcatter but if you are, I was talking about the numbers being low in football, track and girls basketball and like I said before the numbers in those sports have been dropping for years way before Huck and Jost got here. I am not saying both coaches are perfect just saying it is a little unfair to put the sole blame on these two guys. Actually my first post was in response to what Bobcat4life posted. As you know Wildcatter I am Old school and that will not change. We disagree on this subject and that is OK. I agree I don't know all the facts but I stand by my opinion as you stand by yours. I have no problem with that.
Like with many schools.....Parents need to be parents....Coaches, Teachers and Administrators need to do what they are HIRED to do....School Board Members NEED to have an open mind and not an agenda....and KIDS, they just need to be kids and understand that there are consequences for their actions...Looks like its a CONTROL issue to me....
Could not agree more. The numbers have been dropping for a long time way before Huck got here but now it is an issue. The kids who quit were going to quit anyway sooner or later. I say if you only have 11 left then that is the 11 you play with. The numbers have been dropping in football, track and girls basketball while the numbers are good in volleyball, softball, Tennis and golf. Wonder why? I know why. There is more to this then number of kids participating, it is about teaching kids about life in the real world and Huck does an outstanding job in that category. I keep hearing that he is not about all the programs. I am wondering has anyone heard those words come out of his mouth? I doubt it. I don't pretend to know everything but what I do know is before he got here we was defeated before we ever stepped on the field. Now the kids expect to win when they step on the field.
