  1. [Hidden Content] Check it out, there might be some scores you would be interested. There are scores from 23-2A, 22-1A, 27-1A div 2, 22-3A, 20-3A, and all over east texas. If you like what you see and are interested in the site and east texas basketball, please take a minute to register for the site. Thanks
  2. This was a big game tonight that i wouldve liked to have seen. This game was played at Cayuga...Cayuga is ranked #1 in div 1-1A and Goodrich is ranked #3 in div 2-1A as of dec 17. I've seen Cayuga play, they are really good. They could beat good 3A and 4A teams in this area. If Goodrich beat them by 20 they must be pretty dang good... I also just posted this on eastexsports.com. There should be a lot of talk about the game on there in the next day or 2 if you want to know more about it. There are some Cayuga fans on the board that will likely give their thoughts if you want to read heres the link: [Hidden Content]
  3. I know there are several others that deserve to be on this list and i'm sure people will mention those names, but the ones i know of and will give credit to are: Zach Hayes- Orangefield Paul Sims- Warren Tyler Copeland- West Hardin
  4. I've updated all the scores from 12/27-29 for most of the east Texas region. There are scores from 22-3A, 22-2A, and teams around the Lufkin, Palestine, and Tyler areas, along with several tournament scores (and teams listed on setxsports). If you are interested in these scores and like the board, please take a minute to register for the site...
  5. I was at the game tonight. It was obviously a very intriguing game to watch. Both coaches for Warren were ejected midway through the 3rd quarter so the players had to play and make their own substitutions without a coach. They did have to coach themselves, one player got their 4th foul in the 3rd quarter and they took him out. They still ran plays on offense too... Sims seemed to be the team captain or coach out on the court, whether it was huddling the team together or keeping the players cool after a foul was called on them. I came to the game as a casual observer just wanting to watch a good game. With the way the game was being called against Warren i found myself rooting for Warren in the 2nd half. The fouls were about 2-1 against Warren for the game it seemed, yet Spurger was the more physical team on the defensive end, which doesnt make any sense. Thats probably why Warrens coach was so frustrated watching the game and got ejected. A lot of coaches in that situation wouldve probably gotten ejected, or at least a technical. The 2 games i've watched Warren play they were under a lot of adversity. The first game finishing with 4 players and nearly beating Brookeland and the 2nd game tonight playing without a coach most of the 2nd half and coming back to win. I'll agree with whsalum, this team plays well with adversity, i've seen it firsthand. They were down around 10 pts without a coach at one point in the 2nd half and still came back to win. Hats off to Warren, they have a good team and i'll be rooting for them to slip in the playoffs in a tough 2A district. It was nice meeting some guys from the board, i got to meet whsalum, warfan, and bucketsitr tonight, they were all very friendly and i enjoyed talking to them.
  6. [Hidden Content] This was posted on eastexsports message board, but i figure i'd post this in case anyone was interested... I posted the game schedule from 12-27 thru 01-05 and asked the forum to pick the games. The games consists of all teams in east texas, but there are a number of teams from the southeast texas region listed on the schedule including Newton, Woodville, Brookeland, Spurger, Hardin, Goodrich, Burkeville, Woden, Leggett, Broaddus, Chireno, Huntington, Hudson, Tarkington, Coldspring, Tarkington and Lufkin. So check it out and pick some of the games if you like and tell us what you think will happen....Thanks
  7. After 1 week and 2 games of district play, here is how the district looks so far, the scores, and my thoughts on some of the scores Hardin-Jefferson Hawks 2-0 beat WOS 60-32, beat Kville 80-52 Neither of these scores surprise me, HJ won both convincingly Silsbee Tigers 2-0 beat HF 99-48, beat WOS 77-49 2 impressive wins by Silsbee, what you'd expect from them Orangefield Bobcats 2-0 beat Kville 76-53, beat BC 64-29 didnt know how good Kville was so didnt know about that score, but after BC almost beat Jasper, a 35 pt victory against BC was eye opening. Jasper Bulldogs 2-0 beat BC 64-61, beat HF 89-48 dominant win over HF but no surprise, almost lost to BC which is surprising since they got West Orange-Stark Mustangs 0-2 lost to HJ 60-32, lost to Silsbee 77-49 losses to HJ and Silsbee is no surprise, although i thought the games might be slightly more competitive. WOS hard to get a read on yet since they played probably the 2 best teams in district. Bridge City Cardinals 0-2 lost to Jasper 64-61, lost to OF 64-29 played Jasper closer than i thought, but got beat worse than i thought against OF Kirbyville Wildcats 0-2 lost to OF 76-53, lost to HJ 80-52 didnt know about them, but i guess i'm not gonna expect much Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns 0-2 lost to Silsbee 99-48, lost to Jasper 89-48 dont expect much from them this season Biggest week 2 games (jan 4, 8) 1. Jan 8- WOS @ OF- this could determine the 3rd playoff spot, huge game for both teams 2. Jan 4- Jasper @ WOS- once again, this could determine the 3rd playoff spot, huge game for both teams 3. Jan 4- Silsbee @ HJ- both teams likely going to make playoffs, this game could easily decide the district championship though Here are my 2 burning questions for everyone about this district 1. Is Silsbee in the same class as HJ(and can they beat them)? my answer: I think Silsbee and HJ are in the upper echelon of the district, i would rank HJ a notch above Silsbee though....I think Silsbee is easily capable of beating HJ, but i would also say Silsbee is more likely to be beaten by the next tier of teams than HJ is. 2. Who will get the 3rd playoff spot in this tough district? my answer: I think it comes down to 3 teams- Orangefield, WOS, and Jasper. These teams are pretty close and i could see any of them getting in but based on the scores i've seen i would give the slight edge to Orangefield and heres why. Orangefield nearly beat Silsbee and beat BC convincingly while Jasper nearly got beat by BC tuesday. WOS has lost to Nederland and PNG by 20 while Orangefield has beaten both of those teams. So on paper Orangefield has been more impressive but we have to let the games play out. What are yalls thoughts on how the district has gone? How do yall see it playing out?
  8. Why didnt yall check eastexsports.com (your source for east texas sports!)?? Thats who covers Lufkin and that area. Here is the bracket posted on a thread on the eastexsports forum... [Hidden Content]
  9. [Hidden Content] I really hope the astros make this deal.. Prior has a ton of upside and talent and proved he can be real good if healthy. And if he can just get over the injuries we could get a real gem. I kinda believe in curses for players and teams and i think a change in scenery could help Prior. I would be ecstatic if the astros got this guy...
  10. I agree Big Sandy has played a tough schedule no doubt, i never said they didnt. Martins Mill always plays a tough challenging schedule too though. From what i found, they've played Lufkin Hudson (good 3A team), Van (good 3A team), Crandall (3A), Edgewood (ranked 2A team), Brownsboro (good 3A team) Broaddus (ranked 1A) Laneville (1A div 2 state champ last year), Pittsburg (ranked in 6th in 3A), and they're playing in the whataburger tournament...Cayuga just got out of football, but they've beaten Arp (#1 in 2A) and played Frankston, and are scheduled to play Kennard, Sabine (3A), Goodrich (ranked #1 in 1A div 2), and Slocum. While BS has played a tough schedule to date, these schedules are easily comparable to Big Sandys. Me and my friend (who is a head bball coach) watched Martins Mill, Cayuga, Big Sandy and Broaddus this week and have drawn our conclusions from watching them play in person. They are all 4 very close, any of them could come out of the region. If any 4 come out of the region i wont be shocked.. But i would rank Cayuga and Martins Mill just ahead of Big Sandy, thats no slight to them, those are 2 great teams... These teams can beat the best in 2A and very good 3A teams and good 4A teams... This is just my opinion on these top 1A teams but i imagine there are others that would agree...
  11. I've seen quite a few 1A teams and games over the past few weeks and been able to see some teams and i though i would assess Big Sandy's chances of making it out of region 3. There may be a few sleepers i dont know about, but here is how i would rank the 1A contenders to this point... 1. Cayuga 2. Martins Mill 3. Big Sandy 4. Broaddus- (i rank them behind Big Sandy since they lost to BS, but they are pretty even and could easily beat BS at home or on a neutral site) 5. Slocum Other very good teams to consider that i think could beat Big Sandy on a given night Spurger Lapoynor Zavalla Mt Enterprise (not sure how good they are really, heard they lost their best player, we'll find out more in the next couple weeks.) Avery (dont know much about them, but they play martins mill next week so we'll find out how good they are.) I saw all 5 teams in the top 5 play this weekend and heres what happened and my thoughts Big Sandy beat Broaddus by 2 at Big Sandy Cayuga beat Broaddus by 2 at Martins Mill Cayuga beat Martins Mill by 8 at MM Slocum beat a top 1A div II team Brookeland last week by 2 Cayuga- maybe the best team i think in the region, they might be the most athletic too. they have stud #3 in Summerville is as good as anyone. Their size and athleticism could be problems for BS. Martins Mill- very well coached, every player is smart, fundamentally sound, and can shoot it...they can easily beat anyone in the region Broaddus- Big, physical, and athletic, very good rebounding team wins on the boards. Broaddus rebounding ability could hurt BS in the playoffs. Slocum- plays very well as a team, has some good shooters, plays tough defense I would say Cayuga and Martins Mill are the top 2 teams, but i consider Big Sandy and Broaddus right there behind them, very capable of winning against them. I would put Slocum on the next level of teams capable of pulling an upset, along with Spurger, Lapoyner and Zavalla. Based on the brackets and district projections, here is the likely road for Big Sandy to win region 3: first round: bye 2nd round: Grapeland/Lovelady likely (although i dont know much about 21-1A, they werent good last year in playoffs) 3rd round: Slocum/Zavalla semi finals: Cayuga/Martins Mill finals: Cayuga/Martins Mill or maybe Broaddus So with Cayuga and Martins Mill being in the same district, they will be on opposite sides of the bracket. So its likely Big Sandy will likely have to beat Cayuga and Martins Mill to get out of the region, along with Slocum or Zavalla which could give them a tough game. Thats a tough road through region 3, and i'll say whoever comes out of this region, definitely will earn it.... I posted this on eastexsports.com if you want to read posters responses and debates over there, you probably do if you're a Big Sandy fan....
  12. [Hidden Content] I'll be posting the Broaddus/Cayuga updates after each quarter. The scores from earlier today are already posted... If you are a fan of Big Sandy, Spurger, Newton, Woodville, Brookeland, Lufkin, or any team in the northern part of the SETXsports region, you need to check out this site and get on there, because the teams i just listed will be talked about on there. Its also likely the teams talked about on this site your team could see in the playoffs so it would be good for you to keep up with them there. So register and talk about your team on there. It is growing every day and week. This link may ask you to register first before viewing the site, it only takes a minute to register...
  13. I'm gonna give a handful of teams some love here.. In 1A, i'd have to say Spurger. We knew they'd be good although i think they're a little better than people expected. I dont know much about Hull Daisetta and what they expected but most seem to be pleasantly surprised with them..i know they could be good since they have a good coach. In 2A, theres a couple teams to mention. First, Newton is very good, dont know if anyone expected that. They could be the favorites in their district. Deweyville has done very well this year and definitely has a shot in this district. In 3A, Orangefield has done very well. Most people had them going in 5th or 6th before the season, now i see people putting them in their playoff picks.. In 4A, i dont know much about this classification, but LCM seems to be having a nice year.
  14. What are yalls predictions for 24-2A? This will be a very interesting district, because besides Buna, i think any 5 of those teams (EC, Deweyville, Hardin, Warren, Anahuac) not counting Kountze can make the playoffs... Kountze is probably a lock...A lot of people are going to put EC in their playoff predictions, but i wouldnt just assume that will happen. I havent seen them play, but heard they havent played real well and dont have a lot of help around Tremain Thomas. The team i know the least about is Anahuac. I've seen Warren, Deweyville, and Buna play and have seen plenty of EC, Hardin scores, but Anahuac is hard to tell how good they are. They did beat a good liberty team. I think the team of the 5 teams i mentioned that i feel most confident will get in is Hardin. Looking at their scores they seem to be a pretty impressive team. So really to me it comes down to EC, Deweyville, Warren, and Anahuac fighting it out for 1 spot.. My gut says Warren might have the next best chance with their shooting. Dont sleep on Deweyville, they have a good guard in Caleb Jackson and a big post named Bland, they will be a tough team to beat. I wouldnt be shocked to see them get in. I also wouldnt be shocked if EC didnt get in the playoffs. Just some of my thoughts about this district. What do yall think?
  15. [Hidden Content] I know this isnt SETXsports's regional coverage (Broaddus is the closest to us thats in the tournament) but i figured all the Big Sandy fans would be interested in this tournament, since its probably the 3 best teams in region 3 besides BS (Martins Mill, Cayuga, Broaddus). A tourmanent all you Big Sandy fans should monitor closely... 16. Big Sandy 16 35 44 49 Broaddus 12 26 47 46 Big Sandy #10- 15 pts, #23- 13 pts (unofficially) Big Sandy lead the whole game, i dont think the lead ever got in double digits. Broaddus tied the game up with about 3 minutes to go and took the lead for a minute or so. Broaddus tried to hold the ball in the final 1:30 and run the clock out but Big Sandy got a couple steals and scored some points to take the lead back by one pt with 17 seconds. Then Broaddus called timeout and got the ball but ended up turning the ball over and Big Sandy layed it in right before the buzzer went off to win by 3. I was impressed with Big Sandy, this was the first time i'd seen them this year. Their big guy #34 is good, he is quick for his size and has some good moves around the bucket. They have several quick guards that handle the ball and drive to the bucket, and many of them can shoot the 3. You can tell they are all well coached and dont make a lot of mistakes. Coach Foster does a good job with them. Broaddus has some good size and had some players that were tough matchups for Big Sandy. Broaddus crashed the boards well and got some offensive rebounds. Broaddus was definitely bigger player for player and the more physical team. They ran some good plays to get their players the ball around the basket. What did we learn from this game? Well, i felt it was a pretty evenly matched game, although i felt Big Sandy was a little more diverse and dangerous on offense because they could score in many different ways, whether it was throwing it in to the big man, one of their guards driving to the bucket, or setting up a 3 pointer from the outside. Martins Mill is the team to beat in this region... Broaddus has already played them on a neutral site. It was tied after 3 quarters and Martins Mill ended up winning by 10. I imagine if Big Sandy played Martins Mill the mill would have to be favored but Big Sandy is certainly good enough to beat them. just my 2 cents... Was anyone on the board at the game tonight?
  17. I agree with whsalum on the best shooters around, Tyler Copeland is one of the best in the area, especially in 1A, and i saw Paul Sims firsthand last weekend, he can light up the 3's too...Zach Hayes from Orangefield can shoot the 3 real well. I've already seen him get 4-5 three pters in a game a few times this year. He can make it from anywhere around the arc. He will be on everyones list by the end of the year for top shooters.
  18. I vaguely remember seeing someone with a white shirt beside the guy with the orange shirt. Yeah, i wouldve liked to have met you and talked some bball. I was there almost all day. Unfortunately i didnt get there in time to see all the excitement with the principal, but i heard about it throughout the day. Brookeland does have a very good team. I watched Slocum beat Brookeland for the consolation finals. Slocum led big early (got up to 18 pt lead) and Brookeland is athletic, loves to fast break, wants to get to the rim, and kept fighting and made it a game at the very end. It was a pretty good tournament overall, i got to see a lot of teams i had heard about.
  19. i got to see a little over half of the 4th qtr in this game and i'd say it was pretty wild and exciting game to watch. I know i'm repeating this, but Warren played with 4 players most of the 4th qtr and came back from a double digit deficit to almost win this game! They got a defensive rebound with 17 seconds left, down 3 pts, but went down and turned the ball over and had to foul again. I agree with whsalum, it was very gutsy by them to keep hustling then coming down and nailing three pointers. Thats the only time i've gotten to see Warren, and i know i didnt get to see all their players, but they gained my respect. I was glad to see Sims play, since i'd heard a lot about him, he can really shoot. whsalum, i figured you were at the game when i got there, i was looking around at all the Warren fans, where were you at? were you the guy behind the bench in the bright orange warren shirt? i stood near the entrance and watched the game from there then left right after the game to watch slocum-garrison at the new gym. This district is going to be very interesting, with Hardin, Warren, East Chambers, Anahuac and Deweyville all fighting for 3 playoff spots, i could see a combination of any of those 3 getting in.

  22. I disagree with that statement....I thought in the first half PNG got all the calls. I thought the refs made 2 crucial and questionable foul calls on our best player in the first half to give him 3 fouls in the first half, and he missed over half the 3rd quarter as a result of it. I thought too we were lucky to get thru that 3rd quarter without PNG going on a run with the best player on the bench due to questionable foul calls. We seemed to get more calls in the 2nd half, but i didnt think most of the calls were bad, we just caught some breaks. I didnt understand why the PNG coach was freaking out when his player fouled out, he kept arguing the called 5th foul with the official when the call was correct, it was CLEARLY over the back. In the 2nd half, when i thought OF got the benefit of some calls, the fouls were only 8 (PNG) to 5 (OF) before PNG had to start fouling to get the ball back. Thats not that big of a difference in fouls. Overall, they made a few bad calls here and there but what officiating crew doesnt, the officiating was not that bad at all....
  23. Orangefield 7th grade beat Silsbee 57-20... They beat all saints by 20 last week. Tonight they did all this without one of their top 6 or 7 players out for the season, one starter out sick, another starter sprained his ankle and missed the 2nd half. Despite all that, they still dominated this game.. When they get their 2 starters back next week, they will be very tough and deep. In little dribblers last year they gave Kountze all they could handle in the regional tournament. Right now the best class on any level in Orangefield is the sophomore class in basketball. But this is a pretty good group of kids thats played together since they were real young. If these kids can stick together and keep getting better (and grow a little lol) they could be a special group in high school. It will be interesting to see how they do in district.
  24. I got to see the game and here are the observations i made. First off, the caliber of play of this game between these two teams was much higher in last years matchup than this year. This game was much closer than the final score indicates, it was a tight game throughout and Orangefield didnt pull away till about 3-4 min left in the game. It was a very sloppy game at times, and to make matters worse, you had 2 inconsistent incompetent refs calling the game. I've heard Silsbee has had injury problems, i dont know if some of their players played or not, but i didnt hear of anyone out. I will say to be honest, i expected Silsbee to be much better and i thought would have a decided advantage over Orangefield. Especially considering Silsbee is ranked 11th on TABC (which i know TABC rankings dont mean everything). I mean no disrespect, but i wasnt overly impressed with Silsbee, and once Orangefield got up to a double digit lead on Silsbee, i wasnt too worried they were gonna come back. Neither team played that great of a game, and i came away feeling both teams didnt play their best game and should get better as they go through district play. I agree with everyone about Silsbee being tired at the end. Orangefield's press wasnt really that effective in getting steals for most of the game, but it was clear Silsbee was tired and got sloppy at the end and started making poor decisions and turning the ball over more. Unless Silsbee did have some people out with injuries, i think it will be hard for them to go to Orangefield, where Ofield girls draw big crowds at home, and win in their gym. I think this game has to make you excited about Orangefield's potential for this group of girls, because you knew they had talent, although they still have a ways to go. Going back to the TABC rankings, i think if Silsbee is a legitimate top 20 team and stays in the TABC rankings next week after this loss, then OF deserves to be ranked too after that big statement win on the road.
  25. Did Diboll drop out of the tournament? I got a bracket and it has Diboll playing Warren, i noticed you mentioned Lufkin JV and not Diboll in the list of teams..any info on this? To answer your question, i dont know about some of these teams and how good they are in the tournament, most notably Corrigan, Newton, Trinity, Woden. But if i had to make a prediction based on what i know, i'd say the favorites in each bracket are probably Central in the lower and Kelly in the upper, and i got Kelly to win the whole thing. If Warren, Wells, Brookeland, Slocum, Woodville or Kennard lose their first games, any of them are capable are making it to the consolation game and winning... Thats probably all the things i can say that i think will happen...
