The three years that Silsbee and WOS has been in the same 3A district, the games have gone like this: 2006 WOS won 20-13, Silsbee led at half 13-7. WOS stopped Silsbee on the goal line with less than a minute to play to keep Silsbee from tying the game. Total yardage in this game was WOS 276, Silsbee 274. 2007 WOS won 17-6, score was 7-6 WOS at the half then WOS's ground game took over the second half, churning up yards and clock time. Silsbee was limited to just 10 offensive plays in the second half after outgaining the Stangs in the first half 155-84. Silsbee blew 3 opportunities in the first half to jump out to a two td lead, that came back to haunt them. WOS scored right before half to change the momentum. 2008 WOS 14-7 in OT This was a game that Silsbee SHOULD have won. I believe the Tigers outplayed the Mustangs practically the entire game. Silsbee led 7-0 at the half and WOS did not get on the board until 7 minutes left in the 4th. It was the longest the Mustangs went without scoring in any game all season. Silsbee got down to the WOS 4 yardline with 19 seconds remaining but with no timeouts remaining, Silsbee's QB got confused and instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock, he took a knee and Silsbee could not get their fieldgoal unit out on the field to try a game winning chip shot. I believe the air went completely out of the Tigers sails and it showed in the overtime. WOS scored on just 4 plays and then held Silsbee on 4 plays to end the game. A very, very tough loss for the Tigers.

That's a bit way over the top. The dimensions to this park are: Left field line 320 Left Center 370 Center 407 Right Center 340 Right field line 265 The right field fence is 30 feet high from the foul line to just left of right center field. To hit a home run into right field would have to carry 295 to 380 feet from the foul line to right center. -

That's a no brainer, it's the SILSBEE MGA INVITATIONAL!!!!!!! -
Three local players will tee it this week on the PGA and Nationwide tours. Chris Stroud will be playing at Bay Hill this week in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. His tee times are Thursday 8:34 am #10, Friday 1:04 pm #1. At the Nationwide stop this week in Louisiana, former Lamar All-American Dawie van der Walt along with Orange pro Michael Arnaud will be plaing in the Louisiana Open. Dawie's tee times are Thursday 10:05 am #10, Friday 2:20 pm #1, and Michael's tee times are Thursday 2:50 pm #1, Friday 9:35 am #10. Dawie and Michael have also played the last two years at the Silsbee MGA Invitational. ;D Dawie winning both times and Michael finishing in the money each time. Good Luck to all three this week!

I wouldn't change a thing about "The Box". It has character. If the pros can have Fenway and the Green Monster, then HF can have "The Box". -
I predict that Silsbee pitching will NOT give up 22 free trips to first in this game. If they do, somebody better call EMS, because I believe Coach Trawhorn will have a stroke.

Is Football REALLY "king" in SE Texas? Numbers say NO!!!
AggiesAreWe replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I will say this, yes, basketball in this area has been more successful as far as teams winning championships and going deep in the playoffs than what football has done. But to suggest that basketball generates the same amount of money as football is ridiculous. I know from personal experience that we here at SETXsports can get way more sponsors for football than we ever thought about getting for basketball. It's almost apples and oranges. There are the exceptions to the rule (HJ, Silsbee) but trust me, I have tried other schools for basketball sponsors and it just ain't happening. Football on the other hand, well, they actually come to us most of the time. So, as a product that one needs to sell, football is definetly KING here locally over basketball. As for the gate reciepts, just ask any local football ref or basketball ref and they will tell you were the money is, it's football. I'll just use my home town school Silsbee as an example. Tiger football on average has about 5,000 or more attend their home football games. That's at least 25,000 home attendance for the season. For basketball, Silsbee normally gets 10 home games (only had 7 this year) and they average about 800-1000 for those games. So the most would be 10,000 home attendance for Silsbee basketball. The ticket prices are lower for basketball games than football and football in Silsbee has season ticket holders, guarenteed money even if they don't show up. It's not close as far as the money generated from these two sports. Football wins. I am pretty sure it's that way for 90% of the schools in our area, sans the HJ's, Kountze's, and Spurger's. Football generates more revenue, case closed. It may cost more than basketball, and in some cases basketball may profit more, but the arguement was what generated the most revenue and well, it's not even close. I will agree that in some cases the profit % is greater in basketball than in football. But the bottom dollar numbers will still be greater in football. As far as popularity goes, it's still football in this area. A local school can have tremendous success in basketball but not so much in football and it will be shown by the support that they get. But let that same school start winning in football and you will see the support for their successful basketball team pale in comparison to the football support. I broadcast both these sports along with baseball for this site, I have seen it with my own eyes. Schools that are traditionally successful in basketball that start getting successful in football will see the support for football be dramatically more than basketball. Even if it's just one year of success in football out of the last 10 years for that particular school, for that one year, football will be KING at that school. It is what it is. These are the comments I made over on the basketball forum regarding this subject. As big a basketball guy I am, I know that football is KING here in Southeast Texas. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. -

What kind of question is that? I believe it took more than those two players to win the game. Yes, there were errors made by both teams. It's called HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL! -

Is BASKETBALL the KING in SE Texas? Or FOOTBALL?
AggiesAreWe replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
BTW, the last state championship in football for this area is not 1987. Newton has one 2 state titles since then, last one in 2005 I believe. And yes, they are considered in our area. Newton is 65 miles away fromthe golden triangle, and you consider it "SE Texas", yet Houston is 80 miles away and is not? Odd. : : Same could be said about the fact that Orange is closer to Mobile, Alabama than El Paso, but Orange is still in Texas. The boundary line has to be drawn somewhere. Oh, as for the Farrakhan remark, you said it, I didn't. -

Dick, if you want to continue throwing those innuendos, so be it. But as far as this site is concerned, we cover the districts that make up our area, which include Jasper, Kirbyville and Newton. I could say that Newton and Jasper is closer to Silsbee than Houston, would that help? Our boundaries as far as our coverage of teams has always been set. Basically, we cover what the local media covers(tv and print). Therefore when you talk about Southeast Texas on this site, that's what you get. It's all about the local districts. BTW, 65 is less than 80, just so you would know. ;D -

First of all, we here at SETXsports, like you have so many times referred us to, don't consider Houston to be in our area. So when this thread was started asking if basketball is king here in Southeast Texas, I was not including Houston in any of my thoughts. I do understand in the inner cities that football is not the most economic thing to do. I believe that's why they have multiple schools sharing football stadiums, it's more feasible. But in this area, or rural as been labeled, that is not the case. I have seen more people get excited and support their 5-5 football teams than ones supporting their 22-8 playoff bound basketball teams. As for the suggestion the majority of people are always looking forward to basketball season around here, I'll just refer you to our numbers here on our site, they don't lie. -

I did not leave out that football costs more, I believe that to be the obvious, just like the number of fans attending these sports. But this thread was started with the arguement of basketball generating the same revenue as football, and that's ridiculous. I understand all the reasons that you stated as to why "some" of the numbers are slanted in favor of football, but the fact still remains the same. If you want to break it down so that it looks much better for basketball, please do. But it doesn't change anything. I am as big a supporter for high school basketball as they come, but I can even see the writing on the wall.
