Vidor's great new basketball coach
LuvThoseCats replied to T.O.hasgottoGO's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
It probably was the one from a couple of years ago. I didn't realize there had been a change last year and I apologize if it seemed as if I was maligning her. I was just mainly pointing out the differences between previous coaches and Coach Arbuckle. She seems to have a different coaching style and it looks like Vidor has improved already in the short time she has been there. I don't think anyone in Orangefield likes "blowouts" but it is almost an insult to the opposing team to act like they are not a worthy opponent and not even try. I think both teams learn something from any game they play win or lose. Lady Pirates - good luck in the rest of your season. -

One other thing I noticed about the coach. She was up out of her seat the whole game coaching and instructing her girls. She didn't just sit there watching. I'm not blasting the old coach Vidor had but she didn't really seem to do much of anything at their games. Maybe it's just a difference in coaching styles. I hope Vidor appreciates the enthusiasm Coach Arbuckle has. -
Vidor's great new basketball coach

Never has the lack of fundamentals been so apparent than in last night's game that Vidor played against Orangefield. The Lady Pirates would make a great play and then give it right back to Orangefield because of ball control problems. I couldn't believe my eyes a couple of times when they broke our press (not many teams are very successful at it) and then couldn't dribble the ball. They clearly showed improvement on execution of plays (their coach obviously is one smart lady and knows basketball), they just really need to learn the basics. Unfortunately that is learned at a much younger age than high school. Those girls never quit though and definitely came to play. They made it obvious they weren't going to be doormats and were physical and that was great to see. I hope Vidor gives their new coach a chance, not just a year or two. I think she could build a good program with time. -

Central lost the first game to Orangefield by more than 10 points and only won the second game by 3. And you are the only one who can't let it go, you keep stirring the pot. edited for spelling -

BLEED's definitely not on the team. The OF girls would wipe the floor with BLEED, especially #20! -
Knew this was gonna be a tough one for our guys, indicative of how loaded 21-3A is in every sport. Gives a good idea of what is ahead in district.

In my first post I pointed out that missed free throws were costly. Missed free throws are lost points. That's why it was brought up. Regardless of all the things that weren't working for Orangefield, they still had the chance to win. All they had to do was make free throws and they blew it. They have to do better than that in games that count, DISTRICT. Every competitor wants to win every game, true, but there is no getting around the fact that if you are going to lose, there is a lot of relief if it is a non district one. That luxury ends next week with the start of district play. -

One thing. When I say didn't mean anything, I mean in the overall picture. A win or loss in non-district play is just preparation for the district run. So these games are important in order to pinpoint where your team needs the most work, even though they don't affect your district standing. -

Exactly. Central stayed on the free throw line and made most of them. They were in double bonus early in the 4th quarter. Orangefield didn't get nearly as many opportunities and didn't make enough. The foul count midway through the 4th was Central called for 8 and Orangefield called for 16. Orangefield got called for more after that so I don't know how many they ended up with. Two of their starters fouled out and a couple more had 4. Still, they could have won if they had made a few free throws. They have to do better in district when it counts. -

Orangefield lost due to fatigue more than anything. They played 6 games and had 1 full practice in the last 6 days and it showed. They were slow and out of sync the whole game. Just too tired, it looked like. Yes, the foul count was so uneven it was laughable, but Orangefield lost by only 3 points and they missed more than that many free throws. Same thing happened in the Lumberton game. They lost by 2 points and missed 11 free throws. Gotta make the the free throws! -
It's great to see that not only Gerard's team but the opposing team and coach recognized that sometimes football is not always about winning the game, it's also about loving the game.

THREE schools from district 21-3A in the top 20! This just shows how competitive our district is. Good luck to Silsbee and WOS this season (except when you play Orangefield, of course ). This is going to be a great year for girls basketball. Go Lady Bobcats! -
Orangefield's second round playoff loss in 2004. Tied ballgame, final minute or so, our offense had marched down the field with the running game, eating up the clock. Got to around the 9 or 10 yard line with 1st down and our athletic director made the stupidest decision ever. Mr. Brilliant called a pass, our guys got called for holding, backed us up 10 yards, another pass play called, ball was intercepted and run WAAAY back down the field, the other team kicked a field goal and the game was over. We were THIS close to our first ever third round playoff game. All we had to do was stay with what was working, running the ball. If we didn't get in the endzone, the field goal would have won it for us. I still get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when I remember it. I can only imagine how the players felt. The athletic director left our district shortly after that. Our current AD was the defensive coordinator and he had those guys getting the job done every week. Glad he's still with us.
