  6. <-Huge Horns fan (I even have a cat named Vinny after Vince Young) Ags got hosed pretty badly yet it did help my bracket. Still the Ags got hosed.
  7. The Gib at LCM or BC. Both parks seem to have at least a HR a game and usually several more. It could just be the hitters both teams usually have on their teams but the fields are great for HRs too.
  8. I have Xavier going to the 16 too. UGA better not screw this up for me, great Cinderella story or not. UGA 46-42 with 10:30 left
  9. Colleges should be ashamed. Unless they dont want a player who can score from anywhere on the court, play defense, pass, give 100 percent at all times, play hurt or sick, never take a play off, be unselfish - then maybe I understand why someone wouldnt want Kay-K on their team.
  10. I think our boy admin is doing a little wishful thinking on that one LOL.
  11. I was gonna say BH had to be up there. The Eagles are playing great ball. PNG has to be named after beating both LCM and Nederland recently. BC in 3A is the team in this area.
  12. Yeah and so is all the stuff I have had to hear since the spurs won it all last year. FOUR LOSSES IN A ROW BABY!!! Ok ok back to the Rockets. I have nothing to say about Houston right now....DOWN WITH THE CHAMPS! (ok im done..i promise...dont warn me in a private message about staying on topic please)
  13. Just like the 22 wins helped Houston move from 10th to 1st, a few losses can quickly knocked them down a ways, just ask the SPURS!!! (God it felt great to throw a cheap shot at Spurs fans)
  14. OK the Celtics are pretty darn good
  15. No Ray Allen for the Celtics tonight
  16. Jason Clark has made some great catches in the OF for Bridge City, especially two against Jasper. Statum is a pretty darn good CF when hes not on the hill. I also like Tim Barry at LCM
  17. Kirbyville at BC now Wednesday at 1 JV starts at 11 am
  18. LU couldnt get invited over Brown or Bradley, ummmm that kinda stings a little :'(
  19. Why all the A&M love?? With regrads to my co-host Mike Sanchez, I just dont see where the love is coming from. They were so on and off again all year long. If I remember right the Aggies were ranked aboved UT when the year started then fell off the face of the Earth. As much as Id liked a texas team to go deep, the Aggies will not beat UCLA and would have serious trouble against Drake or UCONN that is if they can even get past BYU in the opener. Not hating on the Aggies, just being realistic. BTW, final four in my eyes is Tennessee, Kansas, UT and UCLA with KU downing UCLA to win it all

  21. By Bob West The Port Arthur News KATY — Texas-Arlington’s inside game delivered, Lamar University’s outside game didn’t. In a nutshell, that’s why the Cardinals’ best season in 25 years ended in gloom Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the Southland Conference tournament. The Mavs, on the way to a bruising 81-75 victory, exploited their size and strength advantage to the utmost, starting with a conventional three-point play from 6-9 Jermaine Griffin in the first 16 seconds. Some 40 minutes later, UTA had scored 42 points in the paint, hammered the Cardinals 38-29 on the boards and punched out Lamar’s hopes of a first post-season appearance since 2000. While the Mavs (19-11) got just what they wanted from the inside, LU was unable to counter from the outside. The Southland Conference’s best 3-point shooting team made only 7-of-26 (26.9 percent). Currye Todd (0-for-5), Darren Hopkins (2-for-8) and Brandon McThay (1-of-4) went a collective 3-for-17 on treys and made just 4-of-24 shots overall. Able to get only 24 points in the paint, the poor outside shooting was simply more than the Cardinals could overcome. “We didn’t shoot as well as we needed too,†agreed dejected LU coach Steve Roccaforte, after watching his SLC regular season co-champions lose for the third time in four games to fininsh at 19-11. “We looked like we might have been a little worn down.†One Cardinal who did shoot well and play well was SLC Newcomer of the Year Kenny Dawkins. The 5-9 Dawkins scored 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting and had four assists and three steals while playing his usual 40 minutes. Led by Jay Brown, who provided a huge lift off the bench with 15 points in 12 minutes, four other Cardinals scored in double figures. Lamar Sanders added 14 points and eight rebounds, Justin Nabors contributed 10 points and four boards and Hopkins, despite shooting poorly, managed 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds. Lamar spent nearly the entire game battling uphill, After falling behind 1-2 in the opening 2:16, and trailing 18-7 at one point, the Cardinals clawed back to lead 36-31, before settling for a 42-42 tie at halftime. It was more playing from behind in the second half, as the Mavs took the lead for good (51-49)on a layup by Anthony Vereen at 15:47 and stretched out to 73-60 with 7:49 left. The Cardinals answered with a 13-3 run to get within 76-73 on a Dawkins drive at 3:02. A bucket from in close by Sanders pulled LU within 77-75 with 45 seconds. But the Mavs slammed the door by going 4-for-4 at the foul line. Griffin, who was 10-for-10 from the field on the way to 21 points in UTA’s February loss to Lamar, went 8-for-10 and scored 20 this time. At one point in the second half, he was 16-for-16 in the two games against Lamar, with most of the baskets coming from point blank over smaller defenders. Despite the ease with which UTA got the ball into the low block at times, and the mounting points in the paint, Roccaforte said he gave no thought to switching to a zone defense. “We’re not a zone team. We’re a man-to-man team and a pressing team. We were going to stick with what we’ve done all year long because that's what got us to this point.†UTA coach Scott Cross said the game plan was to get the ball down low to Griffin and get him going early, then continue to go into the post. “That’s what our strength is — we have great guys that can score the ball in the post in Jermaine and Anthony Vereen.†Vereen backed Griffin's 20 points with 15 and the Mavs got an unpected bonus from their guards. Senior Rod Epps, who smothered Hopkins with his defense most of the afternoon, made 4-of-5 treys, 9-of-13 overall and scored a career high 24 points. His backcourt mate, Rog'er Guignard, tacked on 15. When the big men were not working Lamar over inside, Epps and Guignard stepped up. UTA, with 21 of its 30 field goals coming in the paint, wound up making 30-of-56 for 53.6 percent. The Mavs, thanks to Epps and Guignard, shot 50 percent (7-of-14) on treys. Lamar made 26-of-61 (42.6 percent) from the field. Beside poor field goal shooting from guards not named Dawkins, two other potential difference-making stats jumped out for Lamar in defeat. After scoring 29 points off 24 UTA turnovers in a February victory in Beaumont, LU managed only 17 points off 17 Maverick turnovers this time. That meant the Cardinals were forced to spend too much time trying to score out of their halfcourt offense, which is not a team strength. And, as usual, Lamar left points on the free throw line. The Cardinals made 16-of-23 freebies. That’s not terrible but still costly in a close game. Sanders’ 1-of-4 and Nabors’ 2-of-5 accounted for six of the seven misses. UTA, meanwhile, converted 14-of-17 (82.4 percent). “This team did a lot of great things in the regular sea and I am proud of them,†said Roccaforte. “It was noy the way we wanted it to end, it’s disapponting, it’s comparable to what happens in life. Things are always going to go your way. You have to take the good with the bad.â€
  22. Lady Cardinal lifters headed to state meet By Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — When the Bridge City Lady Cardinals’ powerlifting team walks into a competition they usually get some glances and weird looks thrown their way. The young and usually undersized squad does not resemble what normal powerlifters would look like yet when the time comes to lift — all they have done is win this year. The Lady Cardinals are now looking to win it all as they head to the state championship meet this Saturday in Killeen. Five sophomores and one junior make up the team headed to the state meet and Coach Kevin Jones looked to another school squad for his team — cheerleaders. The squad includes Ricci Shoemaker and Emily Blanchard in the 97-pound class, Taylor Daville in the 105-pound class, Alexa Richmond in the 114-pound class, Brittany Myers in the 132-pound class and Valerie Brown in the 181-pound class. “It turns out cheerleaders are great for powerlifting,†Jones said. “They are flexible and have strong legs. They are also used to competition and are great competitors.†Heather Gisclair, a 2007 Bridge City graduate and cheerleader, got the ball rolling for Jones to recruit cheerleaders a year ago and now the Lady Cardinals are off and running. “She (Gisclair) paved the way,†Jones said. “When I got here two years ago, there was only one girl in the program. This season we had 25 sign up. Now we all would be pretty upset if we did not win the whole thing.†Sophomore Valerie Brown is one of the Lady Cardinals who expects the Lady Cardinals to do well once they arrive at the state meet. “This year we are confident and expect to bring it home,†Brown said. “We really recruited hard this year to build a strong team. A lot of girls think if you lift a bunch then you will be called manly. If you cheer and are strong that does not make you a man, it just makes you a stronger girl. I really love to be able to say our team is both pretty and strong.†Sophomore Alexa Richmond is in her first year with the powerlifting program and never expected the team or herself to be this successful so fast. She also said the Lady Cardinals are looked at different when they reach a meet. “Nobody ever says anything but we do get some looks,†Richmond said. “I love to see bigger girls do the same or even less weight than I do at a meet. I never thought I would be able to do the things I have done. We really use teamwork. We push ourselves at practice and then just go out and do it.†Brittney Myers admitted she is a little nervous about the state meet this weekend. “I’m nervous about state but I believe that I will win it,†Myers said. “It’s been awesome to see how many girls have come out this year. This year as a powerlifter, I believe that we will win state as a team. Its all been great. I’ve had a great season and had fun being with my team.†The team Bridge City will be gunning to be is Ingleside, who tied for first last season at state only to lose to San Diego in first place finishes which broke the tie. “I am very, very proud of these girls,†Jones said. “They are seriously some of the hardest working athletes I have ever been around. They never complain and you can’t ever wear them down and now they expect to win.†Ricci Shoemaker has had a blast this season in powerlifting and is already looking for next year. “It’s so much fun,†Shoemaker said. “I’m constantly talking about it and I’m already looking forward for next year since this season is almost over. I have already have encouraged other girls to try powerlifting. People always say ‘No, I’m not strong at all.’ But I didn’t think I was either, who would have thought that one of the littlest girls in the school could lift heavy weights.†Sophomore Taylor Daville knows a win at state would be the ultimate topping for a great season by the Lady Cardinals. “We work at least three times a week and work very hard,†Daville said. “If we win state it would mean a lot to this team. It’s almost everyone’s first year so that would be a huge accomplishment. I am also very proud that our whole team except for two is headed to state.†Richmond said she is confident in her team and also complimented one other for the Lady Cardinals’ season. “Coach Jones is awesome,†Richmond added. “He lifts us up when we feel we cannot do something. We would never been this far without him.†Brown and the Lady Cardinals leave early Friday morning and each of the Bridge City squad knows exactly what they all have to do to bring the title home. “We have to pull three first places and then get all our points,†Brown said. “I am pretty confident we will be able to get it done. We have improved with each meet. I’m really excited.â€
