Wow, Avory Thomas, the number one shot blocker in the state (200 blocks) and he doesn't make this team, unbelieveable. Congrats to all the other area players that were honored, they were deserving. Just looking at the breakdown, 9 guards - 2 ctrs - 1 fwd on one team and the other was 10 guards and 2 fwds? I would think a better format than this would be more equitable for the players around the state and make it more meaningful for those fortunate enough to participate. I feel the TABC needs to modify this practice irregardless of previously mentioned players' snub.
Here is my top 10 alltime Silsbee Tiger Basketball Players. Let me know what you think! 1. Darell MacArthur 2. Thad Holden 3. Chris Miller 4. Lewis "June June" Arline 5. Chris "PeeWee" Martin 6. Damion Bush 7. David Green 8. Al Henry 9. Tirus Elam 10. Lloyd MacArthur Honorable Mentrion Andre Henry Donyell Allen Sid Wilson
There are a number of Tigers who should be on this list that probably are not because you do not have knowledge of them. David Brown James Simmons Michael Dabney Anthony Brown Jerry Lowe Dexter Wallace Ferrell Artis Delton Harper Kerrion Cartwright Any of these guys could be top 10 and or Honorable mention In addition to Green,Holden, D.MacArthur, Arline. It is all perspective. I will say this though, not many teams go to the state tourney with a 5'10" all-state center (Delton Harper-1983) Not on the list??? :) -
I admit that the pressure and pace that Rudder applied caused several of Silsbee's turnovers, but to say it affected their free throw shooting, is a reach. I went back over some of Rudder's boxscores and in both wins and losses, teams shot descent from the line against Rudder. Silsbee had their worst free throw shooting night of the season last night, and it wasn't because of what Rudder did. Like another poster stated, Kountze applied as much pressure against Silsbee last Saturday as what Rudder did last night, and Silsbee shot 65% from the line against Kountze and not the 35% from last night. It was just one of those bad foul shooting nights for the Tigers.
An excellent observation AAW.
Thought some of you might want to hear a Rudder fan's point of view. Let me start by saying that Silsbee is a good team. One of the better teams I saw Rudder play all year. Last night's game went as most do for Rudder. Good teams keep it close, but with Rudder's style of play they run out of gas and Rudder pulls away. Cramps occur in most of their games. Missed free throws happen in most of their games. The turnover count is high in most of their games. All are a direct result of how Rudder dictates to their opponent how the game will be played. It was not just a bad night for Silsbee. Those things were forced by Rudder. Playing without one of their starters (best defender/one of their better scorers) and a backup really hurt Rudder last night! Again, I'm not taking anything away from Silsbee. They are good team and I hope they do well. PS The "prediction" by the Rudder coach didn't happen!
You are correct, the 15 pt "prediction" came from an assistant/scout, not the HC. However, the coach did say he would rather take his chances with Silsbee among other things. Those are not statements to be made out loud even if you think that and believe them. You never know who's listening. Rudder has a very good team and played a very impressive game last night. Good luck to them in the future in 4A next season.

Dawkins attended HS in Florida. I went to college with a guy who played against him in the same district and he said the guy was a beast. He was a direct to the NBA player from HS Along with Moses Malone and Bill Willoughby back in the day.

He has been assisting the Varsity staff of both for quite awhile now. He also played for Travis' dad in the late 70's in Silsbee.
Thanks for the update. I'm glad I can now put faces with names. I knew Coach Williams was a legend around here, so I mistakenly assumed it was that guy. Again, no slights were intended for anybody concerned. BTW, why did you put "older gentleman" in quotes? How would you have differentiated him from the other assistants?
No slight perceived. Both Coach collins and Brooks are the same age. Both played together at Silsbee. (1 year age diff). Of course you could not have known that. Coach collins greyed a little faster.. :)

I thought maybe you had some other information. Sorry about the over reaction. 8)
No, I'm not pulling any legs. I was always confused with Silsbee. I thought Travis Williams was the older gentleman that is always on their bench. I liked the Coach that I talked to (who I now know is Mr. Williams). He was very friendly and easy to talk to, and really concerned about his kids and their futures. Good man. We don't always have that in the coaching field. Yates' 100-point streak ends in win over Westbury

Question: From a coaching standpoint, how different is the strategy of holding the ball to keep someone else from scoring than doing something to get the ball back so you can score? (in this case fouling). -
One game only, all others cancelled. Varsity starts at 7pm.

Question about Silsbee Schedule
AirForce84 replied to MBaller#1's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Silsbee's opponent, Canyon, backed out and the tournament organizers were trying to find a replacement opponent. Most of the problem in finding one is that by Jan.8, a great number of schools are into district play. A final answer should be forthcoming rather quickly. -

coach of the year goes to who this year
AirForce84 replied to skipper's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Coach Bobby McGallion of Silsbee. Although the Tigers started the year 1-4, they are undefeated in district and for the first time since WOS dropped into this district, they are not outright district champions (WOS) via the loss at Silsbee this season. -

I am calling UIL today and talking to them about cancelling all 21-3A games so that Silsbee can begin preparations for the playoffs!! ::) ::) ::)
Lazeek, the above quote is in no way indicative of what most Silsbee fans think. Yes, we are passionate about our program as are most successful ones, but we are also respectful of other programs as well.
Very proud moment for Lumberton. Keep hanging your hat on that one season. Silsbee will just keep doing what they do, make the playoffs.
If my memory serves me well, Silsbee has missed the playoffs only 4 times since 1970.
-
As a staff member, I am pretty sure they are not on our schedule.
-
This Schedule shows Silsbee playing Yates on Dec. 15. That is incorrect. Silsbee has an Open date on that day and do not have a game with them this season.
-
That is correct AAW, Spearman or Green (other back) did not play second half due to injury. A linebacker (LeBlanc) and defensive end (Gore) filled in nicely for them. All should be ready this week.
-
Does Silsbee 7th have an A&B team? That will e great if they do because WOS does too and would be good if they can have those games. No, Silsbee does not have a 7th grade B team.

Silsbee @ Jasper 8th B: Jasper 6 - Silsbee 0 7th A: Jasper 22 - Silsbee 0 8th A: Silsbee 22 - Jasper 18
