  1. Anyone know the final scores on the HF-Jasper games last night?
  2. Silsbee and Jasper's 8th grade teams played to a 6-6 tie last season as 7th graders. This has the makings of a really good game Thursday Oct.1 @ Jasper.
  3. I believe it was WOS 22 - Jasper 0.
  4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! AAW
  5. Great compliment Spinks. I wish there was a way of truly comparing teams over large spans of time other than just speculation. That team was definately the deepest I can remember seeing. Playing the starters the first 4 minutes of each quarter i believe then the next 5 the next 2 minutes and the last 3 with 2 starters the last 2 minutes. As far as Silsbee teams that one would be hard to argue with, but I would like to know how they would have played with the team that went to state from Silsbee in the 80's. The Silsbee team from '98 playin the Silsbee team from the 80's? Uh, don't think it would be fair! [/quote The '98 team vs the '79 Team (30-3) would be a better game: David Green, Dexter Wallace, Keith Holmes, Ira Brooks, Robert Gaines, Michael Elam....
  6. Dickie V, you are correct in your assumption that the big school players are more likely to be recruited than small school, but there are some issues involved. For instance, as a recruiter, why would I try to sign a 5'7'" guard with amazing skill if I can sign a 6'2" guard with the same skill level? That also goes for any other position as well. And yes attitude plays in as well, but you can't coach size. Also the competition level night in and night out is going to be better at the big schools and that IS due IN PART to numbers. Therefore your 4A-5A kids are usually competition and battle tested over the course of their seasons. Those are just a couple things that go into it. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. BTW, I can't speak for other schools but there have been some players from Silsbee that have gone to the next level and were successful. Those that immediately come to mind are: David Brown (Memphis), Eddie Fobbs (Sam Houston St - Pro overseas), David Green (McNeese), Thaddeus Holden (Tennesse), James Simmons (Rice), Darrell McArthur (UH). I am sure I am missing at least a couple more but a lot of small schools probably have at least a few that have done the same. Oh, I forgot Jason Dabney's uncle who happens to be mine as well, Michael Dabney (Hardin-Simmons). Dickie, keep doing what you do, you are very knowledgeable about this game.
  7. 7th Grade: Silsbee 24 WOS 0
  8. From yet another coach, Thank You Informer. We in the coaching fraternity are always grateful for the words of kindness from supporters.
  9. Eric Wilson and Carlton Green ( David's younger brother was on that team, Darrell McArthur was an underclassman. His brothers, Lloyd and Terrell were the guards along with Artis, in '83 to go with Richardson, Scott, Harper, Dodd, etc. Darrell's reign was a year or two later.
  10. I stand corrected. The Silsbee/Stafford game is @ 7pm at Barbers Hill fieldhouse and will be the only game since Ozens game was moved.
  11. The game is at Barbers Hill and will be part of a double header with Silsbee/Stafford starting @6:00 followed by Ozen if there are no last minute changes made.
  12. Nah, If it is not necessary, there will not be a game for the reason you specified.
  13. Yes, Silsbee's Tuesday nite game against BC is being moved to monday to accomodate Silsbee's fans for their girl's playoff game at Barbers Hill on tuesday. Also there HAS been an agreement on the 3rd HJ-Silsbee game at the Montagne next Friday. These agreements are made in advance all the time. They are preparatory actions by coaches to secure venues just in case. This is a common occurance in the coaching community.(This was to answer a previous posters question, not argumentative)
  14. I know this is the wrong thread, but I am wondering why HJ's 2 point loss at Silsbee always seems to be preceeded by the comment that Trey Burrell did not play in that contest but also never includes Silsbee was missing their 6'7" starting post and a prominent roll player in that game as well. Fact is at HJ, Silsbee did not finish the game due to cold shooting much of the 4th quarter and the 18 pt deficit is indicative of fouling down the stretch and HJ hitting their freethrows. That game was closer than the final score indicated. That being said, HJ is the better team right now but not by much. Good luck to both clubs down the stretch and into the playoffs. As long as a 21AAA team brings home the gold, I am a happy and proud Southeast Texan.
  15. That's a great question, he was not anywhere near a hj player. 8) The kid was tackled because the original officer tried to push him away from the group and when he turned to move away (the kid), he was pushed again and turned to get the officers hand off him so he was taken down by 3 officers.
  16. The Silsbee - Vincent game was a great game with Vincent winning by 4. Vincent got too many second and third shots per possesion and that was the difference in the ballgame. Vincent was just too big down low, but they do have a really good team. I saw the Austin - Vincent game earlier and knew Silsbee was gonna be in a dogfight. Congrats to Vincent.
  17. It was thought that Silsbee would be down (or a joke) last year after graduating their entire starting line-up from the previous regional playoff team. However, all they did was return with a regional finals team last season. Here they are again with only one starter returning sitting at 10-2 after being 7-5 at this same time last year. The season isn't over so the jury is still out. That group of underclassmen did play Ozen to 9 points even if it was at home. My guess is by playoff time this team will start getting some respect despite the ramblings of some of their fans. By the way, Silsbee's basketball tradition is such that since 1968, they have missed the playoffs a total of 4 times. No they haven't won a state title but have been to the state tourney a couple times. Not many teams in the area have that track record.
  18. I was involved in a game one time where the final score was 70-7. The kids were backed off to a 2-3 zone, no traps and all bench players on the court for all but 2 minutes of the second half. The only other thing that could have been done is to tell the kids not to shoot. But how do you tell a kid who does not get a lot of playing time that he can play but cannot shoot? These things happen and even if Crocket still ran their base defense, it is when you try to do something that you don't normally do that you tend to get your kids injured. Maybe that JV team should not have been entered in that tourney. Most coaches I know don't go out and intentionally embarrass kids. And yes, you can control scoring in football, its called 3 kneels and punt. I am not attacking you or what you said, just trying to give you a coach's perspective.
  19. You are correct, it was close in the first half and there were 14 team fouls on Silsbee to 10 for Woodville. Woodville went to the line 8 times and Silsbee 4 times for the entire half.
  20. Here is the TABC preseason poll for the upcoming season (officially opens Oct. 17) 1. Canyon 2. Kennedale 3. Llano 4. Princeton 5. Silsbee 6. Levelland 7. Navasota 8. West Oso 9. Diboll 10. China Spring 11. Athens 12. Abilene Wylie 13. Spring Hill 14. Argyle 15. Lubbock Cooper 16. LaVernia 17. Dallas Roosevelt 18. Liberty Eylau 19. Sanger 20. Hidalgo
  21. Add Reginald Garrett to that list as well. SB ring w/ Pittsburg Steelers
  22. I'm that old as well, in fact Roby went 148lbs, benched 320lbs and was cat-quick. He was the smallest and best nose guard I've ever seen and would knock your head off. The 77-78 Silsbee team was loaded on both sides of the ball but excelled on the defensive side that also included Shankle, Graham, Chris Hollis at defensive end, McGallion, and Aaron Hageon at corner. All of these guys were extremely hard hitters.Shankle was a 4 year starter@UT, Graham a 3yr starter@UT, and McGallion was big time at UH. I thought those Greenie teams were better on offense with Arthur Louis at QB and Ricky Thomas and Darrell Mouton.
  23. :-[ Sorry, southeast texas, my bad.
  24. Emeka Okafor also played at one of the Houston high schools.
