1. where did Silsbee buy the lane-camping permit?
2. I hope we play like we played Cleveland.  I know we can do it.  I think we'll come close to that, and win. GO HAWKS!
3. HJ falls behind by 17 and comes storming back. HJ goes on to win State.  Sound familiar?
4. Jessica's dad, you couldn't ask for a better daughter!  Ryan's going to the games tonight and (let's hope) tomorrow night, along with some Hawk Heckler alumnae.  This is going to be a good weekend!
5. "But overall, 2011 will be a rebuilding year for HJ..... I predict a State Tourney Bid for the poor kids." I would not be surprised to see the 2011 Hawks win State--  a back-to-back State title. One game at a time, though.  Let's just make sure we fly all over those Eagles tonight.
6. I am fond of those Weldon studs.  Unbelievable: Today is Ryan's 20th birthday.  Though I never got to see my boys dunk on a 10' goal, I couldn't ask for better sons.
7. I've heard stories, and wish I'd seen the late Rocky Rocquemore play, but I was busy with other things back then.  So much basketball, so little time...  Anyway, Donahoe's my favorite HJ player, of the HJ players I've seen.  Nothing wrong with Jarvis, Trey, Jacoby, Gus, the Ricossas, Grayson...  or any of them-- great, coachable kids all.
8. Donahoe.  Won us a state championship on one good leg.  Toughest kid I've ever seen.
9.
You gotta eliminate second chance points. The Lions have some 3 ball shooters but Brey isn't one of them.Sounds like a low scoring ballgame for the Lions and that usually gets them in trouble.Maybe this will be NW year,I think this will be Kountzes best shot for several years.Congrats to the Lions on a good year and a pat on the back to Roman Walker, this kid has been quetly doing a great job for the Lions for years and will be missed on the local hardwood by not only the Lions but the fans of the game as well.
Quoted for truth.
10. I like that we only shot six 3s despite their size-- and made three of 'em.  Gus, Pru, Turner, Sutherland with monster games.  Phillip had his hands full with the big fella-- refs kept letting that guy "clear space" in ways that sometimes seemed like charges.  Will Anderson and Blake Venable hustled and had some good moments.  It looks like we are getting it together-- and that's good timing, because we're going to have to bring our best game yet come Monday night. I'd like to praise the Rattlers' class, dignity, and sportsmanship.  They have got to hate us after four straight years of frustration, but I didn't see one hint of cheap stuff on the court.  After the game, they wished us well.
11. Get well soon, Poppa!  That's a nasty virus going around.  Everyone wash their hands!
12. Hawks win 87-47.  Way to go Hawks!!!
13. Who's scoring for Hawks?
14. Thanks for updates.  Mrs SETXSLAM is anxiously waiting for each score posted since I can't be there.  Go HAWKS!!!
15. I'm rooting for Kountze.  NW's got discipline and some decent athleticism-- they'll be tough to beat.
16. Seems like we always have to do it the hard way.  The kids tried pretty hard at WOS-- but that bald-headed ref was a man on a mission.  I thank him for giving us the hard time there, and the hard path the rest of the way.  We win state again this year, we'll have earned it.
17. Johnson County Surges Past Scotties Posted by jarnold 02/18/10 1:38pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team couldn’t find the energy to stay with a hot Johnson County team on Wednesday night, falling to the Cavaliers 85-68. The Scottie defense that was so strong against Fort Scott failed to show up. Johnson County blistered the nets, connecting on 60% of their field goals. The Cavaliers used a late rally to take a 40-36 halftie lead and quickly pulled away from the Scotties in route to the win. The loss drops the Scotties to 13-15 overall and more importantly, 2-3 or third place in Region VI D-II play. The Scotties must now return to Johnson County on February 27 for the first round of the playoffs. “We let a great opportunity slip away,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We stressed the importance of playing well and what was at stake, but we simply did not fight like a team that wants to make a mark this season.” Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) led the way for the Scotties with 23 points. Freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) had 10 points and nine assists. Highland will complete the three-game road trip with a Saturday contest against Region VI Division II rival Hesston College. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
18. I wish we could shoot free throws as well as Silsbee! I've made the claim-- and still believe-- Gus, Jacoby, and Phillip are the best at their positions in 21-3A.  I haven't seen gutsier kids, except for Donahoe.  Gus has been playing through migraines and a flu-like illness; Jacoby's ankles are so repetitively sprained that he just tapes them up and does the best he can; Phillip's playing on two bad knees now.  Watching those three kids smiling and limping around after the game tonight is one of the scenes I'll always remember from HJ basketball.
19. I just read Von Wade's nice write-up for the Orange Leader.  He says Grayson had 31.  Ah, if only he'd had 33!
20. One of the HJ stat girls told me he had 32 points.
21. WOS shot the three-ball, and an awful lot of free throws, very well tonight.  They hustled and scrapped and beat us.  Congrats and best wishes to their seniors. Grayson had himself a 30+ point game, and played with a lot of heart.  Aside from Grayson...  Every HJ starter and rotation player finished the game with 4 or 5 fouls.  Little Will came into the game and picked up 3 fouls in about thirty seconds.  Congrats to the reffing crew on their consistency.
22. I perdict another HJ W.
23. Scottie Men Too Much For Red Devils Posted by jarnold 02/11/10 1:49pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team dominted the second half of Wednesday night’s game with Allen County in route to a 76-61 victory. Highland (12-13 overall, 7-7 Jayhawk East) avenged an early 79-77 loss at Allen County, falling to the Red Devils on a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer. In the Jayhawk standings, the race to finish in the top half has tightened with Highland, Kansas City Kansas, Allen County, and Independence all within one game of each other. Coffeyville, Cowley and Neosho County reside in the top three places. Highland is currently in seventh place. The Scotties were efficient all night from the floor, connecting on 29 of 52 field goal attempts (55.8%) while holding the Red Devils to just 38.6% shooting (22 of 57). An old nemissis of the Scotties reapeared at the free throw line with Highland hitting only 14 of 25 attempts (56%). Highland led at halftime 36-35. “We played as well in the second half as we played poorly in the first,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “Allen County was obviously fatigued and we took advantage of it. We will have to play much better defensively on Saturday against Indy to have a chance to be victorious.” The Scotties were led by freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) with 19 points. Freshman Dominique Davis (Overland Park, Kan.) was a spark off the bench with nine points and 10 rebounds. Three other Scotties contributed with double figure scoring. Sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshmen Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) and Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) had 16 and 11 points respectively. Donahoe led the Scotties with seven assists. Highland next hosts Independence Community College on Saturday, February 13. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
24. Red Ravens End Scottie Win Streak at Five Posted by jarnold 02/8/10 1:57pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team ran into the proverbial buzzsaw on Saturday night at eastern conference leading Coffeyville Community College. The Scotties never had the lead in the game, trailing 43-35 at halftime and by as many as 22 points in the second half. Highland mounted one rally that cut the Red Raven lead to four points with ten minutes to play, but poor transition defense and costly turnovers ended any chance at a comeback. “Our approach to this game was like our approach to practice on Friday,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We have some guys that think they can just show up and the game will be easy. We found out tonight that is not the case. We need to get back to honoring the values that had us playing so well.” The Scotties were led by freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) with 20 points. Sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) had 13 points and five rebounds. Highland will return to the confines of Allen Field House for a pair of home games. Allen County comes to town on Wednesday, February 10 for a 7 p.m. tip-off. On Saturday, February 13, Independence takes on the Scotties at 3 p.m. Both games feature former Scottie head coaches with Mike Hayes (1988-91) at Allen County and Patrick Nee (2006-09) at Independence.

Gulley averaged 25.7 points and four rebounds per contest in three straight Scottie victories. He scored 17 points against Fort Scott, 34 points against Labette and 26 points on Kansas City Kansas. He leads the Jayhawk Conference in scoring with 18.5 points per contest.
