It's rainy and cold down here, but no reason for Calallen not to play us here in their own back yard. Must be something more to their backing out than just this weather. Poppa, we'll play AP tonight at 7:30. Should be a good game-- they're always in Austin from Region 4, and they look better than their team last year. Tomorrow will be the big game, against big, bad BH. I hope, as our man swagg would say, that Eagle meat will be tender and tasty for lunch.

HJ beat Odem 89-21. Starters didn't play much. HJ's next three tournament games will be bigger challenges, literally. 4A Calallen looks strong; host 3A Aransas Pass gave BH a pretty good tussle tonight for nearly 3Q; BH is big, very beefy big and tall, and they have a real mean coach and vocal supporters. I will do my best to out-scream them. Go Hawks!

Nice beat-down of a 4A school. Coach called the press off in the 2nd half. If we could make a layup, we'd've put up a Yates-like score. Our FT woes continue. Still, the effort was pure Hawk. JACOBY TURNER!!! was a man among boys. Those Rockport players were dropping their jaws, and a few articles of clothing, because Jacoby was doing his Jacoby thing. Sean Weldon came off the bench to add 11 pts to the effort, including a nice halftime buzzer-beating, halfcourt three.

Agreed, Poppa. Now, if we can just break the .300 FT% barrier! -
No, they weren't, and you could see the difference in energy level on the court. When the Hecklers have it going, the Hawks respond. And vice versa...

78-49 final score. Ricossa, Turner, and Gus played great. Sean Prudhomme and Will Anderson played great at the wing positions. Every Hawk hustled and contributed. Anahuac is bigger and maybe more athletic than us, but we found a way to get it done. Hope we all have a good trip down to Aransas Pass. If I can get internet access, I'll post updates. Go Hawks! -
I have not seen A&M this year. Is Nathan Walkup playing for them? Starting? I saw him in a high school AAU game, and he was impressive.

Scotties Drop Two in Garden City Classic Posted by jarnold 11/30/09 11:45pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team dropped a pair of non-conference games over the weekend in the Garden City Thanksgiving Classic. On Friday, the Scotties fell 79-71 to host Garden City Community College. On Saturday, the Colby Trojans dropped the Scotties 76-72. In the first game, the Garden City Broncbusters came out on fire, hitting nine of 14 three point attempts while building a 51-31 halftime lead. In the second half, the Scotties fought back, getting as close as five points, before a late technical on head coach Jerre Cole iced the game for the Broncbusters. The Scotties had several chances to cut furthur into the lead, but the shots simply wouldn’t fall. “Garden City is the best team we have faced all season. They were very good in the first half,†said Cole. “Like we have done so many times already, we fought back hard and if only a made shot here or a call there, who knows. We didn’t do ourselves any favors by missing another 15 free throws.†Highland was led by freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) had 16 points while sophomore Duane Durley (China, Tex.) had 10 points and nine rebounds. In the Saturday afternoon game, the Scotties took on a Colby Trojan team that entered the game with a 5-4 overall record. The Scotties controlled the game from the tip, building a 10-point cushion, leding 37-27 at halftime. In the second half, the Scottie lead would peak at 14 points with just over 12 minutes to play. Despite a furious run by the Trojans, the Scotties held a five point lead with three minutes to play but consecutive turnovers and an excessive force foul call with just over a minute to play gave the Trojans their first lead and eventually the win. “It is difficult to describe the disappointment and frustration that goes with this loss,†said Cole. “We are trying to validate our hard work and efforts with victories and they just are not coming yet. Our room for error is too small for the number of mistakes we continue to make. We have to continue to get better.†Gulley led all scorers with 30 points. Both Donahoe and freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 11 points in the loss. With the losses, the Scotties fell to 3-6 overall and are currently 0-2 in Jayhawk East Conference play. The Scotties next host Kansas City Kansas Community College on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7:00 p.m.

Seems like this happens to HJ every year--a trap game to learn from. Last year it was Nederland. If we don't MOVE, we don't look very good. We sure as heck didn't look like the team that beat Kountze in Kountze. Also, credit Central, who repeatedly broke our press and got into the paint like layup drills. I am now officially a fan of the little Jaguar point guard with the hair-- can someone post his name? He is worthy of some praise!

Who has the Best Basketball Team in Hardin County???
setxslam replied to swagg's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
HJ already beat Kountze, in the Lions' Den. If the Hawks had hit half their free throws, they'd have won by 18 points; if they'd hit all their free throws, they'd've won by 33. I'd say the Hawks checked the Lions' "swagg" (swagger?) that night. But yeah, sure, HJ's the worst Hardin County team. Believe it. -
The so-called charge on Gus was so bad that even Calvin Rice rolled his eyes and laughed about it!!! The bucket that went it would have sent him to the line to tie it up!!
Refs also cheated HJ at the halftime buzzer, when #40 was clearly fouled on the three-point attempt. One thing about those refs, though: they were consistent. Refs aside, HJ did not look at all like HJ in the first half-- for that half, they lived up (down) to red2red2black's billing. That was surprising to see. The Central kids wanted it more tonight. Congratulations to the Jags. Hawks, learn now! Pull together and play for each other!

Balanced Attack Gives Scotties Second Win Posted by cmosher 11/23/09 10:59am Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team defeated Southwestern Community College by the final of 81-60 to gain their second win of the season. The Scotties had five players in double figure scoring en route to a resounding home vicotry. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) led all scorers with 15 points. Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) had 13 points and five assists for the night. Freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) contributed with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomores Duane Durley (China, Tex.) and Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) both had double doubles for the game. Durley had 12 points and 10 rebounds while McRae had 10 points and 10 rebounds. “It was nice to have a game at home where we were able to build a lead and enjoy a comfortable win,†said head coach Jerre Cole. “If we can find a way to continue to have such a balanced attack on offense, we will be a tough team to beat this season.â€

HJ Coach Todd Sutherland, 3PM, on KFDM.com

How in the world will we beat Silsbee this year? -
Gus's fouling out is one reason HJ only hit one three the entire game.
-
Sean W did hit one of those two tech FTs. He was 3/4 FT for the night-- about three times our team average! I wonder if the kids shut their eyes and hoisted it up there granny-style they'd do better...
-
Man, watching the Hawks on the free throw line was gut-wrenching.

*HJ vs. Kountze Updates...HJ Wins/Comments*
setxslam replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Jacoby Turner 37 pts, 12 rebounds, and... 12 steals. HJ missed 30+ free throws, Gus fouled out in the 3rd Q, Grayson only scored one point, we probably set a world record for turnovers-- and somehow we beat Kountze in Kountze. Go figure. Ricossa is the best big man in the area, Jacoby is the best defender in the area, and they both played like it tonight. Sean Weldon stepped up with a nice little game tonight. Everyone scrapped. It wasn't pretty, but it was a W. Now we Hawks can root for the Lions all the way to Austin. -

It's great to read this, and no surprise. Keep up the good work, Matt! -
Devin's not nearly as good at basketball as Roman Walker. He might be better than what we've got for POTUS, though.

Just tuned in kjccc.org link to "Scottie Sports" and enjoyed some juco kid's breathless play-by-play as Highland ran on SW Iowa, 81-60. Feed died before the box score was read, but it sounded like our local kids (Gulley and the three from HJ) were playing great. Will post box score if I can find it on the web in the next couple days.

Silsbee basketball just got a little bit better!
setxslam replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
"You'll see Silsbee at times with this size on the court all at once, '6"3, '6"3, '6"4, '6"7,'6"8." Yeah, but our SATs are higher.
