1. Missed Opportunities Result in Scottie Loss Posted by cmosher 11/16/09 10:16am Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team fell to 1-2 overall on Saturday afternoon at home to the Cowley College Tigers by the final of 75-73. The Scotties converted on only 12 of 31 free throw attempts, including their last two in the final minute. “I hate the cliché of ‘we beat ourselves’,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “Unfortunately, it fits our basketball team right now. In both of our losses, we have been horrific from the free throw line.” The Scotties came out flat and found themselves playing from behind for most of the first half. Strong play from freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) and sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) late in the half gave the Scotties a 27-25 halftime advantage. In the second half, the Tigers came out strong and eventually built an 11-point lead with less than nine minutes to play. A Scottie surge led by Gulley and freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) knotted the game at 67-67. The Tigers had two chances to put the game out of reach with less than a minute to play, but missed free throws gave the Scotties life. With time running out, a Donahoe three-point attempt was off the mark, giving the Tigers the two-point victory. “We have a lot of room for improvement, and we need to continue our focus on getting better,” noted Cole. “Obviously, we are going to get this issue at the free throw line fixed right away.” Gulley led Highland with 21 points and six rebounds. Donahoe had 13 points and nine assists in the loss. McRae also contributed 13 points. The Scotties next play on Wednesday, November 18 at home against Southwestern Community College. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
2. The scoreboard might need four digits on the Kountze side...
3. Scottie Men Get First Win Posted by cmosher 11/11/09 4:03pm Comments 0 The Highland Community College men’s basketball team earned their first victory of the season with a 75-42 win over Region VI D-II foe Hesston College. The Scotties struggled to score throughout the first half, shooting only 35% from the field, but still took a 31-25 lead into halftime. In the second half, Highland used a combination of defensive pressure and improved shot selection to go on a 28-3 run that essentially ended the game. For the game, the Scotties out-rebounded the Larks 48-33. The Scotties were led by freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) with 19 points along with five assists and four steals. Freshman Jarmar Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) continued his hot hand with 17 points on seven of ten shooting from the field. Freshman Dominique Davis (Overland Park, Kan.) led all Scotties in rebounds with seven. “We have really struggled to find any continuity on offense,” said head coach Jerre Cole. “We have a variety of offensive weapons. Unfortunately, we just don’t know how to properly use them yet. It was nice to see some of them come together in the second half.” The victory improved Highland’s record to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Region VI D-II play. The Scotties next host Jayhawk Conference East rival Cowley College on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. 1 2 F Hesston 25 17 42 Highland 31 44 75
4.
Well lets see my favorite four teams in region three are in order as follows 1. HJ 2. Hawks 3. Hardin Jefferson 4. That school in sour lake. :D :o :D
Ditto.
5. Ah, thank goodness, basketball's back! Kountze looked athletic AND talented last night.  The Lions even have a bench.  I hope they'll win state this year-- looks like a possibility. I thought my HJ Hawks would be down a little bit this year, after losing our Killer Bs; now I'm not so sure.  I saw Gus getting his basketball legs back during the scrimmages; he's going to be very good this year at the point.  Grayson hits a very high percentage of his threes, in transition and in sets, and there are several ways the Hawks can collapse defenses to kick it out to him.  Jacoby is going to be fantastic, of course, the tip of the spear.  Ricossa is, IMHO, the best center in 21-3A-- Rico was running the floor very well last night.  Then we have a committee of capable wings and back-ups, good character guys who will work hard for the team.  Our coaches are the best, period.  Overall, I  think HJ will be very good.  To get back to Austin for the third time in four years, HJ will have to play smart, leave it all on the court, get the Hawk Hecklers dialed up to 11, and hit some free throws.  I think we can do all those things.  It will be great fun to see how this season goes.

7. Free Throws, Turnovers Doom Scotties in Opener Posted by cmosher 11/9/09 1:11pm The Highland Community College men’s basketball team dropped the season opener on the road at North Central Missouri College on Wednesday evening by the final of 72-70. The Scotties played well early, jumping out to a 22-13 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half. The Pirates fought back, but Highland took a 31-25 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Pirates kept the game close and with a run fueled by three consecutive Scottie turnovers, North Central took a six point lead with eight minutes remaining in the contest. Highland regained the lead shortly thereafter and led by as many as three points with just under two minutes remaining. Strong Pirate three-point shooting down the stretch would seal the Scotties fate and hand them their first loss of 2009-10. “It is especially hard to lose the first game of the season and feel like you beat yourself,” said first-year head coach Jerre Cole. “We left a minimum of 14 points at the free throw line and every chance we had to extend our lead, we turned the ball over. We also can’t give up 47 points in a half and expect to be successful.” Despite out-rebounding the Pirates by 14 boards (38-24), the Scotties demise would be at the free throw line and their ability to take care of the ball. Highland connected on only 11 of 25 free throw attempts and turned the ball over 23 times. Freshman Jarmer Gulley (Beaumont, Tex.) led the Scotties in scoring with 21 points. Sophomore Rashano McRae (Bronx, NY) and freshman Ryan Donahoe (Channelview, Tex.) both had 14 points each. Freshman Jarvis Benard (Nome, Tex.) had 13 points. McRae led all Scottie rebounders with seven boards. Donahoe had four assists for the game. “Win or lose, our team desperately needed to play an actual game. The good thing is that it’s now behind us and we can focus on correcting our mistakes,” noted Cole. “We will have to play much better to have a chance at victory against a much improved Hesston team.”
8. Silsbee should be favored over HJ this year.  Silsbee's size and overall athleticism might just be too much for the Hawks, and anyone 3A.  One thing I've noticed about the Hawks, though, for the past five seasons: they get after it.  The Hawks look like meek little bunnies on the court, during warm-ups.  After the opening tip, those bunnies suddenly look like that flying bunny in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog, times five.  You'd best bring your Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch when you play HJ!  Also, make sure y'alls' tetanus immunizations are current.
9. Here's to a state championship for Silsbee-- in football.
10. Wish I could've been there to cheer him on and heckle those refs. Way to go Jarvis!
11. Poppa, Zeek, Nash, come on-- I got you.
12. That was a fun volleyball game. Let's hope they built that new gym to withstand 9.0 on the Richter scale.
13. What I've always loved best about HJ is how we walk into gyms and you can just read the home team's faces, or even hear them say, "That's all you got?"
14. Cleveland looks very good for this next two seasons. They will definitely be the team to beat to get to Austin. I suspect it will be Cleveland and Silsbee in the finals tonight. If I weren't so ready for bed already, I'd love to see that game. Hope someone posts a good description of it here! Silsbee will be the heavy favorite in 21-3A this coming season, but don't count the Hawks out just yet. I'm very proud of the effort all six HJ players put on the court for most of their four games today, including the double-OT loss to Central. Coaches Sutherland and Davis were there to see who was willing to scrap in the middle of the summer. They'll have their work cut out for them this coming season, but they do have something to work with. Thanks to Coaches Williams, Brooks, and all of Silsbee for putting on a first-class tournament!
15. Can anyone please post the schedule here?
16. Congrats! Let's wish the couple every happiness.
17. I think Kobe's going to miss that tall, quiet fellow he'd kick out to for wide-open threes. Ariza knocked those down throughout the Lakers' playoff run. He's tall, 24, and made some aggressive, smart, defensive plays that clinched the championship. Ron's going to be on his best behavior-- even so, it'll be interesting to see how Kobe handles the ball-stopper.
18. Lumberton looked improved from last I saw 'em, at the last HJ tournament. Can't say the same for my Hawks, just last night--but I think they'll come around. One bright spot: Grayson did look great on both ends of the floor.
19. Nothing but seven game series the rest of the way. David Stern's world-wide marketing machine demands a Game 7 between LBJ & Kobe.
20. High School: Earl Evans, Ryan Donahoe. College: Dwight Lamar, Robert Parrish Pro: Hakeem Olajuwon, Walt Frazier
21. What, someone didn't pass their drug test?
22. Congrats to Tap. He joins Ryan Donahoe and Dr. Gene Isabel, that I know of (anyone else?) as HJ's 3A POYs. Pretty good company right there!
23. Garrett Gustafsen's name does not appear up there. He was certainly HJ's Newcomer of the Year. The PG in the HJ system gets run ragged on D-- probably expends more energy on D than in any other system-- and sophomore Garrett G did a great job. He got better as the 44-game season went on. Job well done, Garrett!
