[Hidden Content] Klein Forest held on to defeat Humble 24-17 in a nondistrict game Thursday night at Turner Stadium. The Eagles improved to 2-0 for the second straight season while the Wildcats fell to 1-1. “It’s good to see us battle through adversity,” Klein Forest coach Jonathan Wilson said. “Last year we would get in those moments, and we would shut down and wouldn’t win. Now, we know how to win football games and that’s something we didn’t have last season.” Parker Jenkins, a University of Houston commit, provided the winning score when he returned a kickoff 95 yards for the touchdown for a 24-17 lead with 3:37 left in the game. The Eagles then put the game away on Edward Blacklock's interception. “That was big for us,” Wilson said of Jenkins’ kickoff return. “He’s a playmaker and you always want your best players to have the ball in their hands when the game is on the line.” Klein Forest’s Dario Salazar opened the scoring with a 41-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead with 12 seconds left in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Salazar saved a touchdown with a hard-hitting tackle on Humble’s Damarion Collins. Humble entered the game with a new look on offense, as starting quarterback Tristen Bernard suffered a season-ending right shoulder injury in the Wildcats’ season-opening win over Channelview. Damian Barajas started for the Wildcats on Thursday and hadn’t played quarterback since his freshman season. “It’s tough,” Humble coach Marcus Schulz said of losing Bernard. “I have seen him mature so much since his freshman year then going into the spring and summer. He’s a leader as a sophomore and for him to go down with that type of injury, it hurt him, but he has a good attitude, and he was up in the press box watching the game with our coaches.” Klein Forest wide receiver Jelani Watkins lined up at running back and scored on a 9-yard run as the Eagles went up 10-0 with 6:15 left in the second quarter. With that 10-point lead, Klein Forest kicked the ball out of bounds to start the second half. and Humble took advantage. The Wildcats moved down the field, targeting Texas Tech commit Tyrone West. The senior wideout had catches of 18, 8 and 36 yards to get the Wildcats in the red zone for the first time. Klein Forest’s defense held Humble on third-and-goal and Humble settled for a 25-yard field goal by Ernesto Avila to get within 10-3 with 8:01 left in the third quarter. Then on Klein Forest’s first offensive snap of the second half, quarterback Jaylen Bragg was intercepted by Humble’s Kris White. Barajas threw a 6-yard TD pass to Marques Miller to tie the score at 10-10 with 5:44 left in the third. “We came out here and played hard in the first half and we knew we were still in the game at halftime,” Schulz said. “At halftime, we made a few adjustments. We wanted to get to our quicker passing game and get it to our receivers quickly. We just came up short tonight, but I told the kids do not hang their heads down because that’s a great team over there and we’re going to see a lot better teams in District 21-6A.” Klein Forest got its first turnover of the game in the fourth quarter on Kaleb Porchia's interception. Jenkins then put Klein Forest up 17-10 after a 4-yard TD run with 6:07 remaining. Klein Forest hurt itself on the ensuing drive with a roughing-the-passer and facemask penalties. Humble capitalized on the Eagles’ mistakes amd Barajas hit Miller for a 32-yard TD pass to tie the score at 17 with 3:55 left. But that deadlock lasted just seconds before Jenkins' decisive kickoff return.

Manvel (41) @ Beaumont West Brook (27) FINAL
KF89 replied to jdawg03's topic in High School Football
TEXAS SPORTS NATION//FOOTBALL Using a fast start, Manvel built a four-touchdown lead and then held off a determined rally by Beaumont West Brook for a 41-27 road victory Thursday night. Manvel (1-1) bounced back after a tough loss to Alvin ISD rival Shadow Creek last week. The Mavericks had a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and pulled ahead by three scores after Elijah Williams scored on an 83-yard punt return. Manvel ultimately reached halftime with a 27-7 lead. Terrell Smith scored a third-quarter touchdown for West Brook (0-2) to pull the Bruins within two scores, but Manvel answered immediately with a touchdown of its own. West Brook pulled within seven points at 34-27 late in the third quarter after a pair of touchdown runs from Smith, but that’s all the Bruins would get. Manvel will open District 10-5A Division I action at home against Angleton next Friday. Jon Poorman, Ted Dunnam, Staff Writers -
TEXAS SPORTS NATION//FOOTBALL Crosby and Fort Bend Marshall lived up to the hype of their high-profile matchup Thursday night as the Cougars prevailed with a 27-21 overtime victory at home. Running back Levi Ray Fontenot scored the go-ahead touchdown for Crosby in the extra period, and Nathan Holder secured an interception on the ensuing possession to seal it. The Cougars (1-1) also defeated Marshall (1-1) last season, 37-28. This year’s Buffalos entered the week at No. 4 in the Class 5A Division II state rankings. Crosby opened the first-quarter scoring with a touchdown pass from Cyrin Myles to David Ards. Marshall answered when Jarrod Howard reached paydirt on the ground. Myles scored on a touchdown run of his own in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 14-7 lead. They would take that score into halftime. The Buffalos scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter. Jordon Davis connected with Andre Feast on a score, and Jonathan Haynes scored on the ground. Crosby fought back and knotted the score at 21 early in the fourth quarter as Myles connected with Kade Eudy. That would be the final score before overtime. Crosby begins District 8-5A Division I action next Friday against Baytown Lee. Marshall, meanwhile, has its final nondistrict tuneup against Alief Taylor on the road.
