Wait ----- Oh yes this must have been a April Fools joke as we all know you would NEVER rout on purpose for an Aggie team. As usual this is you backdoor way of making fun of two teams in the same post - Texas A&M and Houston.

Astro's are again picked to represent the worst team in Major League Baseball - 250/1 odds of making the World Series - I think that was worse than last year - closest other team is 100/1 odds.

Texans First-Round Draft Pick
OldTimer replied to eagleswoodville#1's topic in Professional Sports- NFL, NBA, MLB, Etc
Think it might be smart for the Texas to trade the 1st pick - this could hopefully help them in the many holes that they must fill. -
Sorry but GCMPast2 not only dislikes JFF but everybody and everything that represents Texas A&M it is obvious from his post - no matter how irrational they may sound.
-
Make sure that is what Texas fans think - I think he will succeed and have stated so - and all the haters will be eating some crow.
-
And yet he will be an immediate flop in the NFL - go figure

I agree that football is the most popular sport but you cannot compare this to any professional sport or league as they are all for profit business's. Where to comparison is and I think can be used is for major programs like Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc.... as those really all operate on a profit margin and fund other programs within the university. Where it fails is for the other 1/2 of the programs that already operate at a loss and the school funds these programs out of student fees - these schools and universities will have to look long and hard look and where to cut athletics if this vote or decision ends up costing the programs more money. My prediction is if implemented you may see 1/4 to as much as 1/3 of currently offered athletic programs being cut if not totally at least partially - the likely programs that will be cut will likely not be football, basketball or even baseball but swimming, track and field and other low turnout programs will likely feel the axe even at come major universities.

Sorry just had to reread your post - and as always it was laughable. You state that Jaws had the best assessment of JFF professional ability to date - the only reason that "it was the best" was it supported your assessment that JFF would fail. You and the other JFF bash brothers from that support that university from up north a bit that continue to ignore all the other experts that are much more optimistic regarding Manziel's NFL future. This Pro Day was good for JFF and bad for his doubters. How he will perform at the next level is up to debate - but you and most Texas fans do not feel like debating all you do is continue to belittle a player that most pundits have in the top 5 of the draft and many are predicting a long and fruitful NFL career. I will trust their opinions over your until he lines up on the field and proves one of us right and the other wrong.

To answer your question - No this did not answer all the questions regarding his draft status. But it did address - in my opinion - two of the top issues: (1) Arm Strength and (2) Maturity. He was prepared and acted professionally - that has to go to his maturity. And it appears the questions about his arm strength my be behind him It's funny that I agree with you that if this Pro Day lifted him to the No. 1 pick in itself then the system is broken. But the way I see it is everyone - and you as well - keep on thinking that JFF will implode and cause his own draft stock to plummet and that has not happened as he has been impressive with all his outings - while other players have stumbled - i.e. Bridgewater.

Hey GMCPats2 - was not Jaworski your man that did'nt like Manziel?

This could be the death of College Athletics as we know them. If this follows its normal path and we do get pay for play (which in theory I am not against) then the days of the smaller programs may be at the end - as many will find it hard to get the $$$$ to pay their players as the programs are already operating at a loss. Also, this seems to have people only talking about the football programs but this will affect all programs including the women's programs due to Title IX. This has the potential to kill athletic programs for the medium to small schools which in effect will lower the number of scholarships available and therefore lessen the number of opportunities for high school athletes to get college paid for by the Universities. This could really backfire on he very core group of people it is intended to assist - the college athlete as there is very likely to not be as many as before. The big universities can and will find ways to pay their athletes but the programs that are already operating at a loss will likely have to consider what the future of their programs will be. This has the potential if allowed to forever change the landscape of College Athletics - and I believe not for the good. I know this is not directly leading to pay for play - but in my opinion that is the likely direction that this will take - if not immediately then soon.

It's one week away from opening day and the Astro's still look like a team capable of losing 100+ games. Hope the season is better that the pre-season so far. Texas will be better than the Astro's even with injury problems.

Charlie Strong to speak in Beaumont
OldTimer replied to dBerrySports's topic in College Sports Forum
I have heard Strong as I have watched some of his talks on he internet. He is a well spoken and obviously intelligent man who appears to have a strong position on how he expects people around him to act and perform - mainly his coaching staff and players. The several million dollar question is how is that going to resonate with the young minds of the top recruits in he country - only time will tell. As I have stated several times I hope he is successful as if he is it would prompt more universities to attempt this. But I do have my doubts. Of course I am biased and to be truly fair when I say I wish him to be successful - I do but to a degree or two below the success of Texas A&M. -
Harvard seems to pull the upset on a regular basis in the first round

Texans First-Round Draft Pick
OldTimer replied to eagleswoodville#1's topic in Professional Sports- NFL, NBA, MLB, Etc
I am not sold on the Bortles kid at this time. I think Clowney is the safest pick but would still love it if they take Manziel. Manziel would make the loudest impact immediately for the Texans and if successful could put excitement back into the program for years to come. But that being said the best pick is Clowney to strengthen the defensive front line. -
Yeah - Heard that last year as well - we will see

UT Dismisses Players-Culling the Herd
OldTimer replied to Peppermint Patty's topic in College Sports Forum
And True you will not win a lot of championships with the "choir boys" - sorry not it today's day and time. -
You might not but obviously some if not a lot of the recruits don't see it that way at this time.

UT Dismisses Players-Culling the Herd
OldTimer replied to Peppermint Patty's topic in College Sports Forum
So I assume by your statement that most if not ALL the other players on the Texas roster are saints - we will see. I really hope that Strong does implement some serious controls over the Texas program as I think all programs could use some cleaning - but I still state that he can have the cleanest program in the country but if he does not put 9 to 10+ wins a year on the board he will not be there long. -
Sorry but it is the "shorthorns" (my response to your insult of igs) who are out there pounding their chest and yelling to try and make somebody - no anybody - on the national scene give the shorthorn athletic program a little bit of coverage. Yes the shorthorns are a marketable team but until they have something to market the horn fans are going to have to deal with being behind the likes of Baylor and yes (yikes) Texas A&M.

Texans First-Round Draft Pick
OldTimer replied to eagleswoodville#1's topic in Professional Sports- NFL, NBA, MLB, Etc
Texans will draft Clowney with first pick - they almost have to now that they only have one returning starter on the defensive front - defensive line help is more demanding now then QB - it appears. -
