Lamar switches to western side of Southland
weslinder replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I just hope that whatever year we play McNeese in Lake Charles, we also schedule a home "non-conference" game against them. They are, after all, the closest thing Lamar has to a rival. -
I thought some of you might be interested. [Hidden Content] The Rockets agreed to release center Loren Woods from his contract... The Rockets had been considering him as a potential backup for Yao Ming, particularly if they are unable to sign free agent Dikembe Mutombo... He was replaced on the Summer League roster by Chris Daniels, the former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi center. Mutombo, 42, said last month he had decided to "consider" playing again, indicating it would depend on contract negotiations. But the Rockets seem likely to offer only the veteran's minimum contract, worth about $1.2 million, Mutombo signed last season. "Dikembe is still in our plan," Morey said. I would suspect that Chris Daniels is unlikely to make the team, but at least he's getting a look.

That's harsh. Is there anyway we can get UNLV kicked back to UNLV? UNLV is an enthusiastic supporter of Lamar and there's nothing wrong with that. Exactly. All I want for Lamar is the best of the best. The best conference Lamar can get into, the best stadium, best recruits, the best everything yet that pisses off so many. We all want the best for Lamar. It's just that most of us realize that Lamar does not have carte blanche when it comes to conference, facilities, and players. We know they do not have the money to provide these opportunities but enough to get the ball rolling and to build from there. For some odd reason, you don't understand this concept. Now if you are proposing that Lamar wait till they get enough money to build these bigger and better facilities and go FBS, then I can understand that. But it seems you think they can do that right now, and that's just absurd. You're in LALA Land. No, its people like you who nay say everything. You lack an imagination and vision to see anything that could be great. Lamar and Beaumont went 40 years without growth because of leaders who think like you. I like to use Kemah as an example. I'm sure you and many others would have said, one day before construction on the boardwalk started, this guy is an idiot to build a tourist resort in this dump. You lack that vision. I am a true believer in build it, build it right, people will come. I watched it work for years in Las Vegas. I'm watching it now in Galveston and Gilchrist. I'm happy Beaumont in waking up and abandoning your way of thinking. I'm happy Dr Simmons do not think the nay sayers way. Lamar built Cardinal village, Lamar built them right, people came to fill them. Lamar has started football, if Lamar don't do it right, people will not come. PERIOD... None of those "imaginations and visions" were built on a whim. Much market research and planning was done before the first yard of concrete was poured. It takes a lot of money to do any of that, and to put that money up, you need some reason to believe that it will work. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that someone looked at building a better football stadium and going DI-FBS. I'll also bet that the return doesn't justify the investment right now.

Roccaforte to enlist Tic Price as assistant
weslinder replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I'm ecstatic about this. I've always thought that Coach Price was a great X's and O's guy, and if he had someone recruiting for him would have been a great coach. This is a dream hire, really. -
I'm here. I've just been really busy, with no time to watch or talk about sports. I don't think I've logged onto the board in over a month before getting a PM from lu cards. I should be slowing down in a few weeks, though, and try to get back in the thick of things. I certainly will be here come basketball season.
-
There was also a $1.25 MM donation last week. This one is a vital degree for this region.
-
Good, but I expected no less. Tidwell seems to be really committed to Lamar already, and he is old for someone in his first head coaching job. I really wouldn't be surprised if he makes the rest of his career at Lamar.

The plant behind the Montagne Center isn't owned by ExxonMobil. It is a Sulfuric Acid plant that is owned by Olin. They buy sulfur from ExxonMobil and sell them acid, but it's independent. Besides, closing a plant that is necessary for running of a refinery and rebuilding it somewhere else is much, much more expensive than building a stadium.

Unfortunately, Texas isn't Jimmy's home anymore, either. He's living the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle. Kinda hard to give that up. -
SLC Baseball Recruiting Class Rankings

TT, Is Leyja going to make it to campus, or will he be drafted too high? -
Unless something happens, there is no reason the Lady Cards shouldn't be favored to win it all. Returning three all-conference players and several other contributors, and getting two of the very best recruits in the conference. Maybe I'm a little optimistic, but I think the Lady Cards are on their way back to national prominence.

Agreed. There were probably 10000 Southern fans there, and 3-4000 Prairie View fans. Many of the Southern fans made a weekend of it. It was very good for the area. Next time, just separate the bands.
-
My one-day career as a parking-lot attendant was for the Southern-Prairie View game (infamous band fight) at the Cardinal Stadium. Cardinal Stadium was relatively full. We filled up all the lots on that side of MLK, the ones along the other side of MLK, and began filling the lot by what was then McDonald Gym. Since then, Lamar has added parking for each part of Cardinal Village, and across University Drive. There won't be parking within close enough walking distance to show up 10 minutes before game starts, but there should be enough parking.

Astros Interested in Pitcher Patterson

Side benefit: All the people in Orange with the ridiculous Nationals hats can replace them with Astros hats. -
Texas Tech is fighting their own battle right now to become more recognized and to get more funding in the state of Texas. They saw a situation with Angelo State where the San Angelo institution felt as they were being pushed around the TSUS and pretty much "used" for their large endowment (Carr Endowment). Tech knew Angelo State wanted out and made a quiet effort to get them in the fold. It happened and they are doing a lot to bolster Angelo State now. Sam Houston State and Texas State - San Marcos are the least likely to jump systems. Lamar on the other hand, like Angelo State, is probably not in the spot they would like to be within the TSUS. Texas Tech, being interested in "moving up" and getting more $$$ from the state knows that obtaining any institution for them would be huge in their plans. It's not surprising... It's all about fit. Texas Tech is a very good scientific research university, as is Lamar. Lamar has always had a pipeline to Texas Tech's Law School. Texas Tech and Lamar both have great engineering and business colleges. Professional schools like Texas Tech undergrads and love Lamar undergrads. Sam Houston and Texas State concentrate on communication programs and education programs, while their hard science is an afterthought, business secondary, and engineering nonexistent. If those two schools are dominating the discussion in the TSUS, Lamar has to fight for itself for its flagship programs. Lamar does a very good job fighting for itself, but if it could get a better fit, it could do better.

Yeah, but is Lamar interested in you?

No. 1 Memphis (33-1) vs. No. 16 Texas Arlington (21-11)

Bah, I think UTA will drop 80 on Memphis. (And lose 108-80, but whatever.) -
Coach Tidwell says he'll sign two more in April
weslinder replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
It wasn't too good, because I didn't notice that Miss Green was already voted All-State for this year until after I posted. Fixed now. -

I just want to refresh everyone's mind about what a great job Tidwell has done recruiting. While Drake was a good teacher and some of his teams really came together on the floor, his one and only recruiting "prize" was Brittany Williams. In two years, Tidwell has recruited: The best player in Europe in two consecutive years, Tamara Abalde and Kalis Loyd. Both of them over 6'0" and all the skill of a great guard. 1st team NJCAA All-American Nikki Williams. A very good 2-guard who did a yeoman's job at point when AC went down. An NJCAA Academic All-American, Ashley Crawford An NJCAA Champion Point Guard, Agnija Reke. Two-time All-State guard, and possibly the best player in the area, Ang Green. And a lot of other players that do a good job and fit the system well. -
Disappointing end only underscores what Lamar did

Barrow is eligible for one more season, if he wants it and is healthy enough. Were I him, after two major knee injuries, I'd call it quits for my future health, but I have no clue about his mentality on it. -
