Former EC coach getting flack over helmet decal?
WOSgrad replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
At least two different maps refer to Courville Stadium that I have found so far refer to it as "The Rock." [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] And here is a quote from a former player at Ball High: "When I played, we referred to Kermit Courville Stadium as "The Rock" because we felt that when teams came there, they were afraid, of the surroundings and of BHS." Perhaps all of those who claim that Coach Valastro is messing with tradition should learn what the tradition is first. -
If he has been gone and just recently returned, from who knows where, maybe the Stiles Unit????, idk, then it seems like it would be best if he didn't start slinging unfounded accusations right off the bat, especially him being a Moderator.
Just so you have all of the facts, his return is not from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, but from the United States Air Force. Perhaps you, sir, should take a good look at my signature line.
What's with "the Rock"? I must admit that it doesn't make any sense to me, but I could be missing something. What is it in reference to?
Some closer to Galveston may know this, but isn't that the nickname given to Courville Stadium? -
Should "Da' Butch" become "Da' Bubba?"
WOSgrad replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I agree that the life of Bubba Smith, who represented his hometown with grace and glory, should be recognized in some way. However, this could be done by a number of entities, not just BISD. The City of Beaumont, who through the efforts of Mr. Smith and other, benefited with the nickname "Pro Football Capitol of the World" could be called to recognize Bubba in some way. Even the City of Orange, who few know was the birthplace of Bubba Smith, could make an effort to do so. However, to rename the Carrol A. "Butch" Thomas Educational Support Center I think would be an inappropriate step. This is not a situation where the district is changing the name of a stadium from a stadium generically named after a mascot or the district itself. The district, one year after this honor was bestowed on this man, would be stripping it from him without cause to do so. I see that as a slap in his face, which I find undeserved (admitting I am probably in the minority on that). The academic record of the BISD under his leadership is a heck of a lot better than that of many other districts in the area. I don't even claim to know Charles Aaron Smith or anybody close to him. However, from what I have read about the man, while he would be proud that his hometown would want to honor him, he would not want it to come in this fashion. -

Maybe Huffman will beat us in the playoffs this year instead of Coldspring. :D 8)....come on BH fans who's the backup?
Actually, one of the reasons for Townley transferring is that Kaleb Denny had been tabbed as the starting QB at BH.
looking for some playtime.....is he good enough to make a big difference for Huffman/Coldspring?
Well, it's kinda hard to translate his numbers from last year as 1) he split time with Denny and of course, 2) there wasn't as much throwing from Coach Gage's flexbone as there will be in Coach McEachern's spread. But Preston's numbers from last year were 37-74 for 448 yards and 1 TD.

Burman Ervine not returning to Kirbyville

Well, it is not like D. Smith was not supposed to get a good bit of carries himself this year, so it is not going to be as big a transition as some think. They'll just have to have someone step up to take second banana role this year. -

Well, let's clear something up here. While, neither hold certification as "teachers" does not mean that they hold no certification with the State whatsoever. Both Coach Brooks and Coach Collins do hold valid certifications with the State Board of Educator Certification as "Educational Aide I." -
For once I am Right ;D You only have to be employed FULL TIME by the School to be a coach.... :D :D Nothing said about Certifition
Actually, the official interpretation appears to allow for non-certified persons to qualify as full time employees and thus as head coaches, check out the bolded section below: "14. Guys here is the rule straight from the UIL: "Section 1202: EMPLOYMENT OF COACHES (a) HIGH SCHOOL COACHES. (1) Full-Time Employees. A school is not eligible for UIL competition in an athletic activity unless the head coach and assistant high school coaches are full-time employees of the school board of the school which the team represents. (2) Full Time Defined. Full-time means that the person is under contract to the school board of the school which the athletic team represents for the whole scholastic or calendar year, and the person has enough contractual duties to be considered a full-time employee by the Teacher Retirement System and state law. See Official Interpretation #14, Appendix I. (3) Exceptions. A retired teacher/administrator who has 20 or more years of experience may serve as an assistant coach in all athletics and as a head coach for golf, tennis, team tennis, cross country, track and field, swimming and wrestling. (This rule shall not affect the status of a coach on a leave of absence attending college.) Also, student teachers, while they are assigned to a participant school district to fulfill their student teaching requirements, may volunteer to serve as an assistant coach in all athletics. Schools shall not pay student teachers for assisting athletic coaches. A full-time substitute who has coached during the school year may be permitted to continue coaching until the UIL competitive year has ended. Example: state baseball playoffs." Official Interpretation #14 states: "14. Sections 1033 and 1202 – Employment of Coaches: Full time employees must comply with the following standards in order to serve as a high school (grades 9-12) athletic coach or a high school one-act play director. TRS Minimum Employment Eligibility Standards cited below are used to define full-time (but the employee does not have to actually qualify for TRS): (a) A minimum of one-half of the time required of the standard workload (minimum of 15 hours per week for non-certified and 20 hours per week for certified employees); and (b) Earning a salary comparable to one-half the salary earned by a full-time employee in a similar position; and (c) For UIL: is under contract to the school board for the whole scholastic or calendar year for coaching or directing stipend (or contract could be contingent on district’s ability to hire a full time qualified instructor.) Exception: School boards may hire individuals to coach who are not teachers and whose regular duties do not qualify them for a contract with the school district, provided: their employment conditions satisfy (a) and (b) cited above; their rate of pay for the school year is determined by the board before they begin coaching; they are informed by the person approving them for hire that they are not eligible to receive a bonus or any part of their coaching salary from any source (including booster clubs) other than the school district; they complete and sign a UIL Professional Acknowledgement Form." Now that y'all have it in front of you and are no longer guessing, you may continue. -
I actually like the idea, but it appears to be a moot point. According to the schedule which was uploaded 3 days after playdefense's post, Ball will be in a 3 way scrimmage with Cypress Lakes and Fort Bend Bush.

Guys, please, I am sure that Mr. Garrity was poking fun at the spate of "this school violated UIL rules" threads rather than a actual allegation of any wrongdoing by Coach Dale. Boy, if this is what we are like a week before scrimmages start, I can't wait 'til Week 0.
