1.
Thanks for the reply WOSgrad. Maybe AAW can talk you into coming to Beaumont to watch the Cardinals and Jeremy Johnson who in my opinion has the highest up side and will be the starting QB in the fall since he is a freshman and can make great strides from now until he is a senior. After watching the "Crawfish Bowl" I'm ready to catch some Cardinals football games. Even though the teams were divided, I could see some improvement in depth, o-line, the running game and several individuals stood out on defense.
360, I do need to get over there for a Cardinal football game.  Aside from the new talent such as Jeremy, there is plenty of "blue" in Big Red to keep my interest this year, if you know what I mean.

 5.
it was what I was told so, hence the "what I hear".  Sorry if I congused you... Would never suggest that Coach Hooks would be scared of Dayton, just asking the question.  Man you people really are sensitive.
Hold on.  You, a person whose only 4 posts ever on this message board, which is loaded with longtime Dayton and West Orange-Stark posters who I know are close to their respective program, come up here claiming that Dayton and West Orange-Stark are no longer scrimmage partners and claim that you know the reason why WO-S dropped the scrimmage.  The only fact that you have stated that has been corraborated (sp) is that they the two schools apparently will not scrimmage next year. And when because of all of the above, others look at skepticism on your claim, you bristle and claim that OTHERS are too sensitive?  HELLO POT, THIS IS THE KETTLE CALLING!!!!
 6. There is no need to bring back Tom (as Al Caldwell once put it) "Abadremarco."  He had nothing but disdain for Lamar and the Golden Triangle.  And by the time he was through sending the Lamar program into the toilet the Lamar students (of which I was one) and the Golden Triangle was sick of him.  He is not a good coach, he is not a good recruiter.  He failed at Lamar, he failed at Drake. The only thing he ever accomplished in basketball was being lucky enough to be on a bench as Jim Valvano's assistant when Thurl Bailey threw down a rebound on a Derek Whittenberg airball in the last seconds of a national championship game in 1983.  If he is the best that Lamar U. could come up with as far as a basketball coach to replace a hopefully soon to be gone Roc (who interestingly enough reminds me a lot of Abadremarco), then Lamar basketball needs to go by way of Lamar football in the 1990's and shut it down!

 8. Well, let me clarify here.  I didn't intend this to be a pro-football or anti-football thread.  I mean I am ready for football to begin!  I have the preview questionnaire form prepared. I am working on the letter to the coaches and as soon as Kirbyville names their new head coach, those questionnaires are being mailed out to the coaches! And the numbers do bear out that football is our big forum here so certainly our attention to football should not in any way be curtailed and as long as I am in some way responsible for the football forum, it won't be. What prompted me to open this topic is that at some point in the future...it may not be next year...it may not even be in the next 10 years...but it will happen...that we will see a slowing of growth of the site due to football.  Common sense just tells us that we can't sustain the type of growth that has occurred during the football season forever.  At that point continuing growth of the site will depend on these other sports and the growth in January and February shows that we have the potential, if we just pay some attention to these other sports and employ some of the other tools that we have employed in the football forum, to achieve that growth.   And I think dropping a forum, less than 24 hours after the local teams runs counter to that appearance and threatens that growth. Like I said above, this is not personal, it is strictly business.
I heard that West Orange pulled out of the scrimmage with Dayton.  They blamed it on travel but the sad part is Dayton was supposed to go to West Orange this year.  Sorry.  ???
...and welcome to SETXsports.  Nothing personal here, but with all of the Dayton posters that we have that are in the know, the fact that this information comes from a first time poster leaves me a little skeptical of the veracity of your report. That being said, Dan Hooks has been pretty darned successful in preparing his charges for the football season so I am sure he has some very valid reasons for doing so if that is the case.  That being said, having Dayton as a scrimmage partner did seem help in that preparation and I would be kinda sad to see that end.  But when I have about 270 more high school victories as a head coach, I'll be in a little better position to question him.
 11.
Back in my day..before computers, the internet, cell phone, ipod, ipad, ps-2, x-box, Wii, etc., I remember the thing to do after school or on the weekends was to go to C.O. Wilson and meet 8-10 other kids and play a pick up game of baseball. I also recall my dad taking a glove and bat and we would go for an after noon of playing catch, taking some grounders and practicing catching some deep fly balls. I did that with my dad until I graduated from high school. Never once did I think it was uncool. We need to spend as much time as we can with our kids in the backyard or at a park because one day they will wake up and think it is uncool to be out playing catch, etc. Kind of like the old song goes: Son: Hey dad, want to go outside and play some catch? Dad: Not now son, got bills to pay and work to do. We will do it again sometime soon. 8 years later Dad: Hey son, want to go outside and play some ball? Son: Not now dad. I need $40 and the car keys to take my girl to the movies. We will do it again soon..we will have a good time then.
I remember those days well.  Because dad and I did play catch in the back yard and part of that was fielding ground balls, shagging fly balls and having a quick and accurate throw after you make the catch.
Nope, that is not how it is done. Check the two previous posts, they have nailed it.
That my not be how it is done but that is the way it comes out.
Well, when you have a 50/50 chance of that happening every time, I am sure that is the case quite often.  However, it is not guaranteed.
 13.

I think it comes down to passion for the game and wanting to "know" the entire craft.  Too many times i see guys wait for the ball instead of attacking and playing the routine ground ball rather than letting it play them.  Dont worry about making it look good just make the play.
A lot of coaches don't care if a kid has passion for a game and don't even realize that they've got some boys out there that know more about the mental game than the coaches do!  Some of these boys practice very hard in their off season time only to go backwards during the high school season. I know of several boys that go above and beyong during "off season" for the love and passion of the game. If only coaches would capitalize on THAT attitude I think we would see some state titles in the area!!
I am not ready to dismiss the coaches that we have at our local high schools.  I know they do have passion and to label them as basically the sole cause of this problem is ingenuous.  However, while they do not happen to be the cause (at least in my eyes anyway), at least until the end of April it is their problem and they must craft solutions to the problems...I don't think the "they will pull out of this" mentality is applicable in many of the cases we have seen.  Perhaps a day or two (or more if necessary) where every bat is stowed except for the fungo bats of the coach and his assistants would remedy the problem. Let's remember the point that admin made in his original post on this thread.  It is not merely the failure of many teams to play outstanding defense, it is the disturbing failure of many teams to play even sound fundamental defense, resulting in games where teams are committing an average of nearly an error an inning.
 14. Congrats to all of these young men!
 15. I agree.  I mean, don't get me wrong, football is king (as I think it should be).  But that being the case, I think the football forum would survive even in a 5th or 6th spot on the forum list even when football is out of season.  And believe it or not, the appearance that the staff cares about the, for lack of a better word, "lesser" sports does seem to increase interest.  One way is to not just merely put a generic "post scores here" but to have a thread for each individual game. Another way is to have it at or near the top when that sport is in season, rather than buried just before the non high school forums. Like I said above, I just want the numbers to keep growing and I think this is the way it can.
 16. At the outset, I admit that this may be a bit more of a deal than it appears to me but I will lay numbers out and see what y'all think.   This was touched somewhat in a topic in the admin/mod section when the girls basketball section was moved, as some of us thought, prematurely down the forum.  I had aligned the forums in keeping with having forums for sports that were active up toward the top of the forum...a move which had the soccer forum just above the football forum, which raised some eyebrows.  And today, I saw that the girls forum, not much more than 24 hours after the last girls game was played, was again dropped. Now, I know that it is the policy of the board that once a sports season has been completed that the sports forum should be dropped down the list to make way for the active sports.  And let me state right here that I believe in that policy and thus the move of the girls forum was appropriate.  But given the thread in the moderator section, it seemed like a push was made to get the football forum up to the top with perhaps a bit too much haste.  Now, given that the football forum is my favorite, it figures that I would be wholly in support of such a push and I do admit that I am not so patiently waiting until the time that the football forum is back at the top.  But the move that I made, which to some extent I saw undone, are supported by numbers. For that end I submit the page views for the months of January and February in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011.  I chose those months given that they are, for the most part months devoid of active football.  First, January.  In January 2009, the the message board had 1,608,922 page views.  In January 2010, the number of page views was 1,416,888, a 12 percent decrease from January 2009.  In January 2011, the page view count was 2,369,907, a 67 percent increase over January 2010. Next, February.  In February 2009, the page view count was 1,471,609.  In February 2010, the count rose to 1,680,438, a 14 percent increase over February 2009.  This past month, February 2011, that page view count rose to 2,418,865, a 44 percent increase over February 2010. Now what could account for the rises reflected in January and February of this year?  Well, one thing we can be relieved about is that the departure of Chad Cooper from the boy's basketball forum DID NOT HURT SETXsports.  Personally, I believe a large part of the increase is due to Mike's broadcasts of Silsbee Tiger basketball, along with Rob's broadcast of Hardin-Jefferson Hawk basketball, which has us broadcasting two of the more followed basketball programs in the area.  But I also believe that some part of it was due to the fact that rather than just putting up a single thread asking generically for folks to post results, we were a little more active not only in the boy's forum, but the girls as well by posting a weekly schedules and individual game threads on game day.  I can tell you that it did result in a more complete reporting for scores in the girls basketball forum which enabled us to be a more a source that others relied on rather than us having to rely on them.  In short, I think the increase was due to the fact that we at least gave the appearance that we gave a darned about more than football here. Which is why I think that when a sport is active, it should be up amongst the top forums.  Even if it looks unusual, such as having soccer above football for a month or so.  And it should have the same features, such as the weekly posting of schedules and individual game threads.  Please don't believe that I have gotten some sort of World Cup fever and have become a born again soccer fan. Because unless there is a drastic change in my life, soccer will be right up there with paint drying observation as a sport for me.  But that doesn't change the fact that it is a UIL sanctioned team sport which is played by schools in the SETX area and shouldn't be buried simply because we don't care for the sport.  If it is active, it should remain above the inactive sports, regardless of what that inactive sport is. Let's remember that this is SETXsports.com, not SETXfootball.com and the way to sustain the growth we have seen in January and February is to cultivate all sports, not just one big one. Nothing personal toward anyone, just business!
 17. Didn't happen.  Last ballgame of the tournament, Livingston beats Caney Creek 4-1.
 18.
Could we see the end of High School Sports in Football (7 on 7) & Basketball (AAU), is Baseball next ? Good read: “The seven-on-seven stuff concerns me,” Kelly said. “It does have an appearance of separating from the high school coach. In football, the head football coach is still relevant. I don’t know if that’s the case in basketball.” [Hidden Content]
There will be some that contend that baseball is already there.
 19.
How do they decide who plays who?
Here is how it was explained to me.  The UIL matches the teams with the top 2 winning percentages against the 2 teams lower two winning percentages.  So since they Eula and Clarendon have the Top 2 winning percentages, they will be matched against Evadale and Tenaha.  That way we know that Evadale and Tenaha won't meet up in the semis. My further understanding is that beyond the above, the meetings will be determined by chance, that is why we currently don't know whether Evadale will face Eula or Clarendon. Confused yet?  Good.
 20. Here are the records: Region I - Clarendon (24-6) Region II - Eula (34-2) Region III - Tenaha (27-9) Region IV - Evadale (21-15) So it looks as if the Rebels will face either Clarendon or Eula.
 21. Remember, these coaches need these fields in good condition for the next month and a half.  It might seem like the possibility is slight, but they don't want to take even that slight chance.
