Let's hear the volleyball perspective on this subject
WOSgrad replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I have held my tongue on this subject as long as I can. I have absolutely no problem with summer programs wether it be select softball or AAU or USVBA volleyball. Anything that keeps the kids involved is great and I understand the parents wanting to get their child exposure BUT, if they choose to play school sports and be a member of a team, they choose to be a part of that team and agree to those requirements. If select ball is their priority, that's great but don't expect the coach and players to cater to their schedule. It is not fair to the players OR coach. Coaches are professionals who are hired to produce successful programs. You can not run a successful program when kids are choosing to put their priorities over the team's. Is it important to them? Of course it is. Many feel this is where they will get a scholarship (another post for another time) but what about the kid who feels they need to work to have more money? Do we excuse their absence because they had to work or the dancer whose parents have paid lots of money for their dance lessons and they have to miss for a dance recital?? I can see it now, trying to run a practice or prepare for a game when everyone is going in different directions! High school sports is a commitment. If they are not willing to make that commitment, don't expect the others to put in the time and then welcome them whenever it suits THEIR schedule.
Bravo! Bravo! I have been looking for the words to say that for about a week now and you found them! -

Where's that?
It's on 96...north of Buna....Kirbyville is a former 2A school that is being promoted to 3A... ;)
Let's see how they do on their probationary period.... :D
Probationary period??? I guess some of you people have short term memory. Kville has only been 2a for the last two years. Prior to that they was 3a. I belive that the last time they was in 3a they was in 21 3A and finished second in district (9-1) losing only to WOS. I also remeber that the last game they played just a few years ago in 3A was in the Regional Finals against China Springs. I know that 3a will be much tougher compared to 2a. I also know that there are some 3a teams that are not looking forward to Kville moving back into 3A, Although i agree its probably a too high Dave Cambell does have them 10th in state and picked to win district. Ii Is a probationary period really necessary?
Simmer down, it was a joke.
[Hidden Content]

That's gonna be about twice the weight of the WO-S center (okay and exageration, maybe, but not by much) that he lines up across from in Week 1. -
There seems to be a trend away from what is best for the team and your teammates to what is best for me. I think it is a sad trend.
I don't know that it is a trend of selfishness. These young men (and as we have learned this year, young women, too) are making decisions about their lives beyond high school. Part of that decision making is not selfish, but rather selfless. Those that have either had to pay for their own education or have sent kids to college know what an expensive proposition it is. So these young men and women, who I am sure acting on advice that foregoing playing a fall high school sport will increase their chances of earning a college scholarship, have chosen to sacrifice experience that goes with being on their high school teams to ease their family's financial burden. That is truly admirable and mature beyond their chronoligical age. Here is why I used the word "disturbing" in an earlier post. As I just stated, I have no doubt that those that are foregoing their respective fall sports are receiving advice that the extra exposure and/or practice will increase their chances of receiving an athletic scholarship. However, in following high school sports, I know that the percentage of young men and women who play sports, be it high school or select, that are offered athletic scholarships is preciously small. And the reputation of some select coaches is that they are a bit, let me put this diplomatically, possessive, of the players on their team. I certainly hope that the advice that these young men and women are receiving is SOUND advice based upon their current skill level and actual chances of growing into a college prospect rather than advice based upon ulterior motive. Otherwise, they will have given up an experience that they will never get back, and in the meantime possibly harm the performance of their friends and sacrifice their chances at scholarship, for nothing. Unfortunately as the numbers opting to go this route increase and the numbers of scholarships given in the area do not, I fear that some will not have their expectations met...and that is where everyone loses. That being said, I wish Price, Tyler and Dillon, and those like them well and hope that their goals are met. -
First Price Jacobs at GCM, then Smith at Nederland...
Oh, it started long before Price opted to skip football. This is a trend that could be traced back to last when Statum and Felts did the same thing at Orangefield. And this year, Dillon Duplant, who was slated to be the starting quarterback at Hardin-Jefferson, opted to skip football to concentrate on baseball. In fact, it appeared that Orangefield was going to lose its starting quarterback to select ball up until last week and may still end up losing some players who opt to skip football to concentrate on select baseball. These young men certainly have to do with they must feel is in their best interest, but I must agree that it is a growing trend and a disturbing one as schools, especially the smaller ones, need ALL of their best athletes. -
Thanks to Otter for providing me some additions to the HF schedule, it help me make more complete schedules for a couple of teams who I don't have schedules from.
-
Guys, if y'all have a JV or Soph team that needs a game, y'all need to help these guys out. They only had 8 games on their schedule to start with and then they lost Galveston O'Connell (Oct. 1) and Chester off of their schedule. They did pick up a Week 1 game against Legacy, but they are still hurting as now they are looking at a 7 game season.
Guess we are about a week to ten days out on having accurate answers to these questions.... ;D
That's about right!
Anything new in the 22-3A district? Predictions? Players to watch? Anything????
My top 3 are 1. Cleveland 2. Coldspring 3. Huffman. I gave Cleveland the nod despite the coaching shakeup just a few weeks ago. Coldspring is going to have a MONSTER running attack this year, with Huffman having a wide open attack!
I just saw shotwell stadium. I'm in awe. They added seats to it and looks like they're working on the pressbox. They have a massive video scoreboard. I thought ratliff was the Mecca of west Texas, my opinion has changed. I felt like I was on Friday night lights. :o :D What's the best stadium you have ever been to in Texas? Only 3. ;D
Taking the pro stadiums out of the mix, I have been to Galena Park ISD and Berry Center in Cy-Fair. Berry Center is the better facility...but the parking there STINKS!!!!

Slow!? Maybe for y'all! LOL! But it will be an exciting season no doubt! We have a 5A team in the Top 10 polls for the first time in quite a while. 20-4A seems like it will be a dogfight again!!! 2A and 1A teams don't have to wait 'til November to see which division they will be going in!!! And to top it off, we now have a 6-man team on the list of teams that will be kicking off this fall! It will be a fun season once again! Let me repeat Rebel Yeller's prayers for a safe and health filled season, as well as caution to everyone to take it easy in this heat! And in the words of Vito Corleone, "I would like to wish you good luck in your venture...so far as our interests don't conflict."
