Select Softball Conflict with School Sports

This has been a good thread to read but am I correct in saying we are talking about "Southern Nationals", "Southern Nationals" come on "Southern Nationals". Is this not the tournament for all the teams that did not qualify for the REAL Nationals. Anyone who plays ASA can attend this one. Will not be any coaches watching this one. May be time to start Volleyball practice.
Not the point. AD didn't say "those attending Southern Nationals and missing practice can't play". What he said affects a whole host of kids that could be playing in a National event. Again I ask if the OF kids from the BC LL had played in the LL WS and missed a few Football Practices would they be kicked off of the team? or even expelled from school for missing a few days?
While I doubt they would be expelled, under the policy that Coach Huckabay seems to be holding to, the answer is yes, they would be held off of the junior high teams. -

Select Softball Conflict with School Sports
Girls select softball has really changed over the years. There are so many new college programs that have just started and/or young programs trying to become winners. They are recruiting hard to find those players to help their program. Texas is the 2nd most recruited state for college coaches.(California is #1) The girls playing select softball know this. They also know that some tournaments have as many as 75 to 100 college coaches or scouts in attendance. There may be as many as 10 to 15 colleges watching a single game. These colleges will include UT's, Texas A&M, LSU and every school down to the smallest JUCO. That is a big deal to any kid trying to play at the next level. And the kids also know that recruiting is seasonal. If they miss a tournament they could have missed the golden opportunity. The kids put in alot of work and the parents do put in alot of money to help them reach their goals. Bottom line is this is not just some summer league. Now, I realize the school wants to impose certain requirements to ensure athletes do the right things for their high school sports. One of those requirements is show up to practice. I do understand and appreciate that as well. I just think this rule of missing practice constitutes missing the whole season is way out of line and I think that is the thing that has people wondering what he is trying to accomplish making the punishment so severe. There is an obvious disconnect here. I could see this really hurting the schools volleyball and softball programs (unless you want all you athletes playing only one sport) Maybe both sides can get together and talk this out. The AD may not know what he doesn't know and vice versa for the parents and athletes. I truely believe this can be resolved. But if he does decide to stand by this decision he better be ready to enforce it on all sports and all players because people will be watching. Sorry, wrote this before the 100 word max was enforced.
Don't worry. This isn't twitter.com! -
Chester eyeing six-man football chances
WOSgrad replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
It is official, Chester will play six man football starting this season with I have heard 6 games on the schedule, rumor also has it that all 6 games are away games. Also there are some 1a schools scrambling right now to fill the opening in there schedule left by Chester going to six man so late in the year.
Well, a couple of the 14-1A teams have done something to fill the void. High Island took Galveston O'Connell (which was also a scheduled opponent for Chester) and Burkeville will be playing a home and home against Legacy. I had heard Coach Williams was having difficulty getting a filler game and haven't heard anything about Sabine Pass. As to the rumor about all of Chester's games being away games, I don't how much stock you can place in that rumor. One of Chester's probable opponents, Mount Carmel, has listed it's schedule on a statewide six man site and stated that in Week 0 they will be traveling to Chester. Coach Holton, who as of last week was still finalizing neutral site locations for a couple of games, promised that I would get the schedule shortly. Then we will know for sure. -

Any smart HS coach understands that atheletes that participate in summer sports has tremendous benefits for his HS program. I often see HS coaches at the area tournaments and they support their players in addition to gaining an abundance of information just by observing. What you dont see very often is HS coaches coaching from the stands and getting involved directly with the players which while being a common courtesy, it also is frowned upon by UIL. On the other hand, it should also be the same common courtesy for Select coaches to refrain from coaching outside the dug out at a HS game. Also, the same should apply in situations when it is not the same sport. As long as atheletes are staying in shape, multi seasons and or multi sports should be acceptable.
I like this post. Good one Weed.
I like this post also, multiple high school sports are a must at a 3A school. I do not put select teams in that category. These coaches job status are based on results. It is their lively hood. Softball is not the income of some of these select ball coaches. What happens when your star player on the volleyball court gets hurts during a softball game? Would'nt you say that hurt's the "TEAM". High school sports is the only form of "Pure Sport" left on this earth and it is slowly slipping away. Someone said this is 2010 well 2010 pretty much sucks. blah, blah blah. The 70's and 80's was better. At least in the 70's and 80's the value's were still there.
Nice post, bleed. A couple of things. First of all about this "bad" man that is putting down this edict. Brian Huckabay knows all about the riggers of summer ball as his son, recently graduated, played a bit of summer ball so it is not as as if he is unsympathetic about these young lady's plights. Second, I think that no one can lecture him on issue of sacrifice. This is a man who left his coaching job so that his wife could take an administrators job in another district. But finally and most of all, he is an administrator that has to oversee the performance of ALL sports. He is trying to protect the volleyball coach and her time to practice and prepare her team for the season. Unlike football (and for those that believe that if a guy was missing a football two a day that he'd be allowed to slide, i can ASSURE you that football coaches would have QUITE the opposite reaction), volleyball does not have 3-4 weeks to get their teams ready for the season. If a player misses "a couple" of practices, they are missing most, if not all of their preseason practices. In what position does that put the volleyball coaches? In what position does that put the teammates that must adjust during the season on the fly. I read a bunch about the AD being close minded, yet I read things like "We will not let anyone tell our kids in this Organization, no matter who it may be, that select softball should take a back seat to anything." It sounds like a whole lot of pot calling the kettle black. -

Let's hear the volleyball perspective on this subject
WOSgrad replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This softball tournament is a National Tournament with teams from 5 or six different states attending. There will college coaches there recruiting with scholarships. If this was just a normal tournament I would see missing it for a High School practice or game but this is a National event. In the fall we have softball tournaments also and the softball players are instucted that their High School comes first because it is their schools season. Well it is still Summer Balls (select teams) main season and if the High school can be patient for just a couple of days I am sure the kids would do what ever make up work the coach would require be done. If we all just wanted to get along and work together.
While I understand the importance of this tournament, you must also look at it from the standpoint of the volleyball coaches. One of the things I have learned from gathering the 2010 schedules is how incredibly short the "training" is before play actually starts. Volleyball teams start practice on Monday (Aug. 2) and are into scrimmages that Friday (Aug. 6) and/or Saturday (Aug. 7) with the first game of the season being on the following Tuesday (Aug. 10). So there are not a whole lot of practices before the first games and an athlete that misses just a couple is missing most, if not all, or the team's first practices. This will be a little difficult to make up. -
Got the schedules of West Brook, Central, Ozen, PN-G and Splendora as they have just been posted on their school websites.

Thanks to Coach John Leonard at Barbers Hill for getting me the Lady Eagles schedule. Come on, folks! We are 2 weeks away from the first game and I have a lot of schedules to get!

Anything to pad the already padded "81% winning record" that does not count most of their school history. ;) ;)
liltex, this guy just can't hold back his bitterness toward WO-S. I remember his words on this message board right before WO-S scrimmaged BH for the first time, "Get ready for some real competition." True to his typical retarded predictions, BH got spanked. In fact, BH has scored only seven (7) points in all our scrimmages combined. No one counts scrimmages in the record books, but if BH would have "won" the scrimmage (dreaming, of course), bh89-2 would have announced over and over that BH "won" this thing, and in his mind it would have counted as a real game. If we would have played BH in two-hand touch, flag football, 7 on 7, a or a traditional scrimmage format, it would not have mattered. Same outcome. For his sake, it's a good thing these were NOT real games, but if they would have been, we know what the obvious result would have been. bh89-2, scrimmaging the Eagles was such a distant memory until you brought it up again. Thanks for reminding us that we have a 100% winning percentage in scrimmages against your team, but who's counting. :D :D :D
I am not counting WOS's record against C.E. King either, where WOS was outscored 88 to 21 in three games. ;D ;D ;D Or that 52 -29 beat down Wimberley gave WOS. Or even better, how about the loss WOS took to the Mighty Huffman Falcons in 2004. In the words of my Kirbyville friends, WOS who? ;)
Funny you mention Kirbyville. There is somewhat of a common thread there...Kirbyville has never beat WO-S....and Barbers Hill has never beat Kirbyville.
Kirbyville friends?? Thats what i was gonna say WOSGRAD! The only thing we have in common is neither of us can beat WOS! You see the difference is Kville can actually beat teams from the Triangle! BH just sits on the other side of the river and uses Dayton's success as their own.
Yes, I did notice that ryker. I won't lump him with other BH folks, though. He is in a league of his own. -

Friendswood will be a pretty heavy favorite going into the game with WO-S, I don't think anyone would doubt that. But as you said earlier, this is a game where Coach Hooks will definitely see the areas that need to be worked on before district. -

The first district is pretty easy to figure. In the other two, Coldspring is kind of the odd man out, like Livingston is now in our local 4A district. Coldspring is much closer to Warren and Woodville than they are with Anahuac, East Chambers and Hamshire-Fannett. Other than an occassional BC team, WOS would completely dominate this district. BTW Grad, you left out Kirbyville. ;)
Coldspring would still have Shepherd and Tarkington (just outside of Cleveland) along the Hwy 59 corridor. Kountze, Warren and Woodville (Hwy 69 Corridor) and Buna and Kirbyville (96 Corridor) I put in with the Orange County teams (Bridge City, Orangefield and WO-S)and Hardin-Jefferson. Then I paired western Jefferson County (Hamshire-Fannett) with Liberty Co. (Hardin and Liberty) and Chambers Co. (East Chambers and Anahuac) to pair them up. WO-S would have battles with Kirbyville and BC. But after looking at this, I think I would rather the Enterprise numbers be correct and WO-S go back to 4A. -
