Single Site State Championship Info
WOSgrad replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I've got to weigh in on the negative (and that is regardless of which games are in the rotation, matt). Let me outline some reasons: 1. The idea of any games on Thursday, regardless of the time it is played, cuts the 6 coaches and teams that have to play that game off at the knees. Recall that many playoff games, unlike in the regular season are played on Saturday. So what you have are teams preparing for their most important game of the year in the shortest amount of time prescribed by the UIL. Throw in further that one of the days for some or all of these teams will be taken up by travel and you have a very short time to prepare for a team you have not seen on the field or in films all year long in a game that may define you. 2. I also dislike the single site for the reason Champion Eagles and ECBucsFan have already stated and that is that it gives an instant advantage to teams which happen to be in the region where the one site is located that year. Yes, the UIL might claim the need for some stability and feel that they could get some further television rights money out of this. However, most choices for these championship games have been fully capable of supporting TV broadcasts. But what the UIL has done has made sure that no games are opposite each other at different parts of the state. Therefore, all attendance, radio, internet and TV viewing are all focused in on one game. Which leads me to think that there might be a co-conspirator in this move, FOX Sports. Actually, they, not the UIL, are the real beneficiaries of this move as they no longer have to farm out their broadcast rights, which I understand they hold for all of the games. 3. Finally, I agree with those who dislike games before noon. A 10 o'clock game is particularly ridiculous..11 o'clock not much better. I think the two schools deciding on the site for a championship game worked for several years and that there is really no need to disturb it. But alas, we don't have the money and, thus, we don't make the rules. -
So there is a double header at West Brook friday?
Yep, WB and Pearland in the first game at 4:00. WO-S and Tarkington in the second at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday HS games tend to be afternoon kickoffs.
That's right. Over here in the Houston area, day Saturday games are the norm. Most administrators (and parents, for that matter) wish to have the days festivities wrapped up by the afternoon or early evening. The other alternative is a Thursday night game, but varsity games vs. junior varsity games are not to many coaches liking, either.
Trying get a picture of who might be playing who.
Sorry, guys! I have severely under the weather this week. I have suffered through work, gone home and gone to bed. They should be updated after tonight's games. -
Well that is just the burden of the beast there. When you have 3 different schools using one stadium, not every game is going to be played on Friday. This is especially true during district.
I know were not setexas, but I love the website, high school sports in general and knowing what were facing once the playoffs get here. Plus I admire how much y'all support your teams. I wish we had something like this site. The only thing they show a lot of pride in around here is baseball. Fortunately, were getting behind our football program more and more. I feel out of place a lot of the time on here, but like I said...once the playoffs are here, at least I'm familiar with what were facing.
No need to feel out of place. The opinions of you, your Cubs brethen, fellow 18-4A members (next year to be 17-4A) or for that matter, any from outside our coverage area are welcome, ANY TIME!!! Heck, if enough of ya' show interest and post here. SETXsports may annex y'all. ;)
How about selling the naming rights and using the money for the athletic program?
Good thought, but corporations buying naming rights for high school facilities are few and far between. I know of only 2. Woodforest Bank Stadium in the Woodlands and I think it is called St. Francis Rose Stadium in Tyler.
-
The main problem I have with the naming is the loss of revenue. They could have sold the naming rights to the complex and then named the field after him if that is what they decided to do. Motiva, Goodyear, etc probably would have paid money to have their name on the complex. Poor thinking by the board.
The current name of the stadium does not foreclose the opportunity for naming rights to be sold. If one of those companies offered money for the naming rights, I think the name would be changed in a heartbeat and I don't believe that anyone in BISD, including Dr. Thomas himself, would oppose that at all. But naming rights for high school facilities are a lot more rare than their new pro counterparts. I wouldn't hold my breath on that.
