Whats the Best High School game you ever been too!
Bulldog92 replied to Boogy1000's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
1987 - #1 WO-S @ #3 Jasper in the Alamo. Kevin Smith miraculously gets the Stangs in field goal range with seconds left on the clock and the Stangs win 3 - 0, later going on to their only undefeated season and second state championship.
I was at that game, too, and there was no rain or cold to keep the score down. It was all defense. There probably weren't 50 yards of offense combined in that game, but both teams had good offenses that year. Both teams brought the wood and it was fun to watch. Hated that we lost, but it was a GREAT game. -
Where's Walkoviak?
I'd love to see him go back, but I think he's happy doing his thing in Newton on that staff. This past week has probably been rough on him, though. He and Coach Barbay were very close from everything I've heard. I like everything I've heard about Coach Bickham and I think he'll do good things in Jasper if given the time. Having said that, nobody has done more for the Bulldogs than Coach Walkoviak. I think most Jasper fans would welcome him back with open arms if that's what he wanted to do...

Wow. I was just coming on to see what happened Friday night after a pretty busy start to my weekend. I've followed football in that area for 30 years and there wasn't anyone involved that was as respected as Coach Barbay. Prayers are being sent up from here in Washington and I'm sure many are from my friends in Jasper as well. Rest in peace, Coach.

Jasper vs Silsbee Predictions
Bulldog92 replied to the sports guy's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Is this the youngest team Jasper's had in a while? I just don't remember us getting this soundly beaten so often. I'm not there to see it for myself, so bare with me. -
This is tough beyond comprehension. I love watching the game of football, but know that possible tragedy is always just one step away. Clearly, this will be a very tough thing for his family, the WO-S fans, and everyone involved to work through. Speaking from a long memory, Jasper was on the other end of something like this over 50 years ago. Twice in two years. I would say it took the town years to heal, but I am not sure the healing is completely done. This sad event in Orange brought back some tough memories for me as surely as had it been a Jasper player. Orange, best wishes in dealing with your unspeakable loss.
Agreed. The rivalry we have with them has changed forever. It sounds like Reggie was a great kid and I'm praying for all of you that are grieving. What a terrible loss...

If you are going by percentage and not total wins, well then I'd like to see how Hebert stacks up. They haven't been around for a while ya know ???
Hebert would move to the top of the list, 135-29-7, a .810 winning percentage.
I remember Coach Walkoviak talking to me about Hebert and all of the trouble they gave Jasper back in the late 70's and early 80's when only one team from the old 9-4A juggernaut would make the playoffs. Those were some of the best Bulldog teams ever and we couldn't seem to get past those guys...

Here we go again. I'm as big a Jasper fan as there has ever been, but I'm sick and tired of this crap. We have no room to trash talk to anybody until we win a ring. To my knowledge, that has never happened. Knock it off!
-
I hope that isn't one of Jasper's players on here talking already. This year's team is supposed to be down a bit and ALL of Jasper's players need to be in the gym lifting or on the track running right now to get ready for two-a-days. Talk on the field. GO DAWGS!!!

EURO IFFY on the new run, but still something to watch
Bulldog92 replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Bulldog I think we will have our first named storm in the next 4 days, and scary thing is it will get in gulf and anything could happen!!!!!
They just labeled it an invest this morning (93L). Some of the models are suggesting a hurricane at Cat 3 intensity by the end of the work week. It's way too early to know where it's really gonna go, so it's not time to freak out. Just keep an eye on it and listen to Kerry and Greg... -

I saw that, too. The latest run (00Z) has a 950mb hurricane (strong cat 3) bearing down on the LA/MS/AL coastline in 240 hours (10 days). That would be disastrous on its own, but would wreak havoc with the oil slick. It basically runs the hurricane right over that area. Everyone's wondering what happens in that scenario. Unfortunately, that model (along with others that agree with it) suggests that we're gonna find out. See here: [Hidden Content] -
If you could have one rematch for your schools team...

Jasper vs. WOS (4A Quarterfinals) in 1986 that the Mustangs won 21-15. Either team would have won state that year. That one really stung... -
Prayers from Seattle, too. Very sad news... :(

How about Coach of the Decade....
You guys can't imagine how proud us former Jasper baseball players are of Coach Mixon and the job he has done. For him to get this sort of recognition in this sort of forum/crowd is really nice.... By the way, I think Mixon hit 13 home runs and batted over .400 his Junior year at Jasper...
Shawn was one of the better players of his era in Jasper and has definitely made his mark as their coach. I also grew up with him and had no idea that he would eventually run the program, let alone win a state title in Jasper. He's always been an overachiever, so his success doesn't surprise me at all. I just thought he would go farther as a player than he did. BTW...he was a pretty good pitcher, too. -
BEST SETX Running Back You Ever Saw
Bulldog92 replied to Boogy1000's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
From the time I was in Jasper as a kid, I'd have to day Reggie Davis is right up there. He was the catalyst of some really good mid-80's teams for the Bulldogs. -
the lack of anyone mentioning Malone shows the youth of this board. ;)
Agreed. I remember Jasper running into PNG back in 1989 during bi-district playoff time in Pasadena. Both teams had explosive offenses that year and it looked to be a pretty even matchup. The Indians jumped on us early and often and that game was over before it really started. Malone did a great job there...
-
Just heard this on ESPN Radio. He's supposedly announcing his resignation tomorrow. I wonder who'll be in line to take that job. UH is a sleeping giant. Has been for years...

Sean Weatherspoon at NFL combine 34 reps!!!!

I think he'll stay close to home and go with the #32 pick to the Saints. -
Carthage at Jasper updates......Jasper Wins!
Bulldog92 replied to adminbaberuth's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I've kinda been out of the loop lately, but apparently Jasper's got a heck of a team again this year. It's always good to see. I remember all too well a couple of years in the early 90's when we couldn't say that. I left Jasper after my junior year and I'm pretty sure the varsity went something like 4-20 and my JV team went maybe 8-5. Who lost all of our games? Me. Mathematicians that need a break from extrapolating pi (3.14...blah blah whatever) are still trying to calculate my ERA. ;D -
Jasper non district schedule Lumberton Livingston Cleveland WOS Silsbee Orangefield This was given to me by Coach Bickam at Region 5 this morning after the districts were announced.
I like it. Last year's pre-district was pretty tough, too. What all do we have coming back anyway?
-
I'm confident that Coach Bickham has something for Rusk this week. Jasper will bounce back in a big way...

i remember a game in pasadena ,cold in the playoffs indians won
I remember that game. It was against Jasper.
I remember that game, too. There was a lot of hype because both teams were very good that year. PNG came out fast and never looked back. They had a bruiser at tailback and our defense just couldn't handle him. It seemed like they had the ball the entire second half. Ugly night for sure from a Bulldog point of view.

Hey, I did not say that Jasper cannot win this game. Coach Hooks himself said these dogs can hit! It will be an interesting game to say the least.
Neither of us would ever say that Jasper can't win any game. Some are just more challenging than others. I agree that it will be a great one, though. Hopefully, I'll get home early enough to catch most of the webcast...
