Is Yates running up the score right or wrong?
whsalum replied to Leftover Cheese's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
There are ways to keep clubs from scoring that many.I think the clubs they are playing are responsible for the scores.Slow the game down, let the air out of the ball, trip the breaker , whatever it takes but don't try to run with these rascals. You're not gonna win that battle. -
Evadale wins this one at home by 6.

This team is only a true PG away from being one of the best Kountze teams in several years. They have some folks playing out of their natural positions but they are doing a good job.

I can see a total changing of the guard coming in Beaumont hoops. -
It should be about the season.I enjoy football as much as anyone but I'm not gonna post about the off season program. ::)

Who is the best player ever from this area?
whsalum replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Brandi McCain was probably the best to ever play from this area.Carol Sims was the best I ever saw personally(and I saw her alot). Most people don't know it but she averaged over 30 points a game in a 4 year high school career and is the second leading scorer all time at Lamar. If they would have had a 3pt line back in those days no one would have ever came close. She could pull up and shoot the 20 foot jumper as pretty as anyone, guy or girl, I've ever seen. -
Bernsen was as good a PG as I've seen. Not a dominant scorer but could sure pass the rock. The girl from Goodrich(her name escapes me) but she set every modern day scoring record for a high schooler.I saw her as a freshman and she could go.

Just wonder what everyones thoughts are on this.I'm all for kids signing to play college ball if it's going to help parents pay for those college expenses. The simple truth however is there isn't a lot of money out there for most JUCO players and practically none for a D-3 signee.I never have been a fan of kids transferring schools in pursuit of a scholarship because usually it's a lost cause.Too many kids on signing day sign to play at anywhere U only to be back home in the spring. Most kids are alot better off enjoying being a good solid high school player rather than jumping campuses in search of a scholarship. What do ya'll think?

West Hardin vs. Evadale predictions?
whsalum replied to oilerman21's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I think Jason Wilkins is the coach over there now.If he is it's great to see some of these young coachs coming home.I think Evadale can split with SP but I dont think the Sharks will lose 4.I can see both clubs finishing at 7-3 and playing off for the second spot. -
FINAL---SPURGER 69 SABINE PASS 52
whsalum replied to court side's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I don't think little dribblers hurts by any stretch but it's not responsible for success once you get to the high school level.I think for the kids to be successful in high school it's all about staying in the gym throughout the off season.Spurger went to the regional finals 2 years ago with a very good group and a different coach.Phillip Whittacre,JT Sheffield and Coach Stappert were the main cogs in that wheel.I will agree with ya 100% about the coach they have now ,he is doing a great job.Spurger will be lucky to keep him.I think this group has the potential to go at least as far as the regional tourney and then anything can happen when you get there.I hope the fans over there really get behind them ,they are fun to watch. -

Spurger has been good the last 4 or 5 years because they have had a group, actually 2 groups, that work hard and play alot throughout the summer.I'll agree they may have a little advantage early in the season but by this time of year everybody should be about equal. The only thing that may hurt the Pirates in the playoffs is depth.I was surprised to only see 3 players on the bench the other night and foul trouble could be an issue down the road. -

Just seeing if Matt was still watching the board. He could definitely play, just messing with him a little bit.Got to visit with Matt while he was in for the holidays and he seems to be doing well.Wish him nothing but the best. -

For the most part I agree totally with your game summary. This entire game for the Sharks was whoever got the ball went 1 on 5 and forced everything. No floor spacing,no passing and absoluely no defense. The only 2 players I saw for SP that were a factor were#30 and #25 and they are going to have to be given some help on screens to win against the good teams.#10 isn't a bad player but only can shoot the wide open set shot,he isn't going to score on his own.I was surprised that with all the returning players he Sharks haven't gotten any better. -
Honestly the only thing standing in our way of austin is New Waverly... but after this year it will prolly be two years before Kountze makes a big run at the title again.
Kountze is good but you never know what's out there.Always some good clubs around Tyler.Gotta agree with AAW they better win it this year. -
It's big enough to hang all those banners in ;D ;D ;D

FINAL---SPURGER 69 SABINE PASS 52
whsalum replied to court side's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I know Daniel can shoot it a lot better than he did last night.McGallion doesn't have to shoot the 3 for Spurger to win.If he passes the ball like he did last night and Whittacre plays the post like he did and Daniel is anywhere close to his game this matchup isn't even close. It was still a 17 point win and would have been 20 if not for a silly foul on a last second 3.The first thing SP will have to do to even stay close is collapse on George and make the Pirates shoot from outside.I believe the Evadale game with the sharks will be close. -
Either one will get you beat but you can score if you have a good defensive club off the break and still have a chance to win.A good shooting team that trades baskets and plays soft defense won't be successful because shooters will have some off nights. That's a long way of saying a good defensive team gives you a better shot at winning.

FINAL---SPURGER 69 SABINE PASS 52
whsalum replied to court side's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Your right about Spurger they are gonna be solid, especially if they get the injured kid back. The other kids have gotten a lot of experience while the Pirates had injuries and that will help down the road. The SP players almost looked confused last night running the press.I don't think they are quick enough to press the Spurger club.I'm gonna watch the SP/Evadale game I think it's going to be real close, especially at Evadale. -
WHS alum where is ur list for the warriors?
Warren doesn't have a rich basketball history as of late but they used to put some really god teams on the floor. If I had to make a list it would have a lot of old schoolers on it: 1-The Whites-Reuben,Daniel,Wayne and Jessie.Throw in a couple of sisters and they beat most teams. 2-Jessie and James Wolf. Two great high school players who went on to the NFL. 3-Jimmy Rawls-He played in the late 60's I believe and could score 50 on any given night. 4-Johnathan McNeal-Big guy with a soft shot who could fill it up. 5-Jacob Terrell-Great player on a average club. 6-Jerrod Walles-Spent more time on baseball/football but was the real deal. 7-Alan Danos-Didn't play but 1 year but was the piece that made Warren go. 8-Paul Sims-Shot over 80% from the FT line and over 40% from behind the arc for his career. 9-Fred Dunham-PG-Could single handidly beat the press. These guys are not intended to be in any particular order but if I had to pick 1 as the best it would we Reuben White. This guy cut 4 fingers severely on his right hand in an ag shop accident and learned to play lefthanded and never missed a beat.
