  1. Can't argue with the order of your top 3 but I think Warren will be a little bit improved next year. This years group was at a disadvantage because they had very little game time experience and all the starters played football. They will return 3 starters in Scritchfield,Wilson and Greeson. The younger Blackshear boys will be very good ball players before their through.Warren may not be in the mix for a playoff spot next year but they could easily play a spoilers role.Their biggest hurdle will be lack of size, they will be quick but the bigger clubs will hurt them.
  2. What's the purpose of signing with Lamar PA if they offer no scholarship money,no meal plan and no dorms as I've seen on another post????The main reason for these kids to sign would be to get their education payed for.
  3. I'm confused!! If's there is no scholarship money,no dorms and no meal money how could it be called recruiting ??? What are these kids signing to play.Heck they could pay their own way to a D-3 and play and get the same perks(none).
  4. There are a ton of kids who are mentally tough and disciplined that never get a look at the college level. The discipline is the most overlooked aspect of the recruiters on the smaller college level.Thats a shame because there a lot of kids who are recruited and there character surfaces before they ever get on the floor. This is kinda getting off topic because it doesn't apply to Jarvis,he's mentally tough as nails.
  5. Every school should be lucky enough to have an AD like David Martel.
  6. You are definitely right about that. There are a lot of good players out there that never get the opportunity to play. That's what is so sad to see those that do throw it away.
  7. With your definition, the *next level* could be a step down for some players 8) That's not my definition. That's a fact, anything after high schoo; is the next level. The levels don't always go up'I've seen a ton of good players after high school playing at the "y" or the rec center because they still love the game,Some don't have the help out of high school to play so their next level is a step down ;)
  8. Both clubs missed an extra point : ::)Now that's ugly :o
  9. Now that's a broad question.Everyone gets caught up in the "NEXT LEVEL".Fact is anything after high school is the next level. For some of us it was a pick up game on Thursday night at the "Y".For most of the really good local players it's a small D2 or D3 or possibly a JUCO.I'm a huge Jarvis Bernard fan but when you look at the D1 talent on the floor these days it is unreal. The size is the biggest difference in the teams because they can all flat out play.A lot of kids also struggle academically because of the time it takes away from your studies to play college ball.I certainly wish Jarvis well whatever he chooses to do,he's a good kid.
  10. Teams definitely take on the strengths and weaknesses of their coach.I think it definitely helps to have a good shooter teaching the fundamentals. Then it is pure dedication that makes a pure shooter. The 2 things that never change in the game of basketball if you're going to be successful are discipline and fundamentals. You teach those 2 in that order and the game will never out grow you. It's no coincidence that the really good programs always have those ingredients.
  11. He would definitely get the kids attention with the STOMP. ;D ;D
  12. You would have to put that ole foot stomper on your list. The guy can coach on the fly with the best of em.One of the best offensive basketball coaches I've ever seen.
  13. The biggest thing that seperates the good officials from the bad is understanding the game and the basice knowledge of the sport.I'm not talking about rules and regs here but situations.A great example is late in important ballgames(playoff or play in type games)knowing when the coaches are going to want timeouts and that type stuff and putting themselves in a position to see the bench as well as the court. The really good ones you don't even remember who called 5 minutes after it's over.Officials are just like players, even the good ones have bad games and they are the first to know it.The most overlooked aspect of officiating is conditioning. Most of the bad calls you see are from positioning simply because the guys couldn't get there.I called for a few years and hope to get back in to it soon.If anyone gives it a try they will get a whole new respect for those guys.
  14. I don't have a dog in this fight but I don't care how many A-s these guys have in their classification these kids can play and should be on anyones list. Bernard-HJ Robinson-Silsbee Rivon-Anahuac Walker&Williams -Kountze. FYI-I would take these 5 and play with the big boys ;)
  15. DISCIPLINE,FUNDAMENTALS AND DEFENSE.DO THEM IN THAT ORDER AND YOU WILL BE PRETTY SUCCESSFUL.LEAVE THE FIRST ONE OFF OR JUST MOVE IT AROUND AND YOUR IN TROUBLE.
  16. I hate to admit this because it means I probably watch way to much basketball but I did see the Lady Eagles play this season. That being said I didn't nominate any of them. They were very fortunate the young lady from Kountze was injured or they wouldn't have made it out of the region. They are well coached and have some good athletes who win with pressure defense but I didn't see anyone I would have put above the 10 I picked.JMO for what it's worth.
  17. Kountze had a guy singles player a few years back that came from Germany. No one had heard of him before regionals. He was the runner up that year in state and could flat out play.On the doubles side this year Word and Andrews could easily win the region.
  18. This kid must have started running when he was 4,seems like he's been there forever.Dooley is a natural distance runner who actually looks like he loves to run.He is a lot of fun to watch.Good luck son.
  19. As long as it is a legal part of the game you can't a coach for using it if it helps his club win.I would rather win 30-28 than get beat 80-78.I personally would like to see a shot clock but it will never happen in high school hoops.
  20. You've gotta be kidding me! When they played Kountze in the play-offs my wife and I both agreed that they did look pretty old. Interesting. I hope they can go. I want a rematch next year! Lord, I've got twins who will finish their first year in college in mid may and will still be 18.Gotta be a limit on the waivers somewhere. : : :
  21. If Davis comes back healthy Hardin is a playoff club.
  22. I'm about to give away my age,but I remember when you had 5 first teamers and 5 second teamers.I know Kountze was the best team in the district but 6 all district selections??
  23. I didn't say he hadn't visited UCLA.I said he had as much a chance to play there as I do.I have witnessed his work ethic first hand and it takes much more than talent to play D-1 football especially in the PAC-10.He is no doubt one of the most physically gifted athletes to come thru this area but sometimes has problems with dedication and seeing things thru. The Bruins recruiting list will be full of kids just as talented who will make the sacrifices necessary to play.I hope Devin proves me wrong but I would be surprised.
  24. My country bumpkin guess/assessment is that the HJ coaching staff is, yes, ( and all self appointed gurus brace themselves for this shocker) that the HJ coaching staff is more qualified to appraise the players within their system than someone from outside of the system regardless of superiority complexes and consequent failed attempts at condescension. After all, if you have been to Austin 2 of the last 3 years and were one game away from being there 3 consecutive years, you might possibly have some faint idea of what is going on in the basketball world albeit from a very weak region. I was attempting to make a joke there Nash.I agree with you whole heartedly about the HJ staff.
  25. I don't mean to throw water on the campfire here but that is 20 all district selections in a 7 team district. That would mean that over 50% of the players in this district were very good caliber players. There are some really good players in this district but we are really starting to water down the process.
