  1. I knew she was a first team pick and rightfully so.I hadn't heard anything about her until I saw her play late in the season.Coack K definitely has one to build around there.
  2. They are probably good enough to figure out who their best 5 players are, if not maybe they can go down on Lakeshore Dr with some tape and get some advice.Gotta agree about the poll, someone is reaching.
  3. Don't count Anahuac out, they have the same type athletes that Kountze has and a coach that knows how to develope players in the off season.Kountze should be the district favorite but are gonna be small again next year which will make it tough for them to get out of the region.Hardin slides in to the 3rd playoff spot next year if they get the PG back from the knee injury. The district next year looks like this. 1 Kountze 2 Anahuac 3 Hardin 4 EC 5 Buna 6 Toss Up-Warren and Deweyville This is like 3 different caliber districts, the top 2 are close, the next 2 are almost dead even and the bottom 3 are all capable of beating each other. In my opinion what the Lions would gain by adding Brey they would lose in team chemistry.UCLA is in the PAC-10 and Devin would have about as good a chance playIng football in the PAC-10 as I do.Come on folks this conference is home to USC,Oregon and Washington, this is a big time D-1 conference.
  4. High school basketball is ALWAYS about match ups.I didn't get to see Madison this year but they didn't beat the heck out of LE so unless they had a dominate big guy the HJ match up would probably have been a close ball game.
  5. That's her, very good offensive player. And the girl from Silsbee I think is the most underated player I saw this year.
  6. Hargraves-Ktz Moore-HJ Wagner-O-field Washington-Silsbee Brown-Ozen Deaver-Kountze Wiley-Central Johnson-Ktz Fontenot-HJ Thomas-EC WOS also had a girl that was a very good offensice player but her name escapes me right now.The Thomas kid from EC really impressed me early in the season before a knee injury slowed her down a little.I think she is an underclassman and will be a player to keep your eye on.
  7. so you think he'd kick decarlos off the team?? He would learn to put the program first or he would take himself off the team.I 've heard this argument for certain type kids for years and it just doesn't wash. There is no substitution for disciplined old school basketball when it comes to winning teams. Most of the successful coaches in this area trace their roots back to excellent fundamental coaches who start with good disciplined "D".Fred Williams,James Gamble and Charles Breithupt turned out some of SETX best current coaches in Southerland,Joubert,Williams and Davis just to name a few. There is no better example than this past season when all these teams were successful because of the old school team concept.
  8. I don't think Duane would have any trouble with any type kids. They would play his way or be playing down at Melton.I personally wouldn't see going from Kountze or Silsbee to Ozen as a huge career builder.I enjoy watching Travis and Duane coach at their current schools,I hope they stay put.
  9. My only question here would be Domingo Smith. He was probably the best PG in the district and he's on the 2nd team??? Come on folks I know Ktz had several already on the 1st unit but to leave this kid off was wrong. He made the engine run for the Lions.
  10. This one will definitely hurt but you gotta take your hat off to the Hawks. They lose by 4 in OT in the friggin state tourney. That's not to shabby for a down year.Good job guys.Gus will be fine that's an awful big stage for a soph.
  11. You gotta like Memorial and Cleveland with the returning players they have.HJ will be all they can be as long as Todd is at the helm.Ozen will realize just how much of their success went to Pt.Arthur.I think Silsbee missed a golden opportunity this year, they will have a tough time filling Shannons shoes. All in all the traditional powers will stay the same locally as long as the coaches stay put.HJ,Silsbee,Kountze,Anahuac,Ozen and Memorial will all win in SETX and they all have coaches I wouldn't bet against.
  12. I would urge anyone to get some tape of Copeland in his sophomore season and watch his defense. He didn't have any help this year on the offensive end.I'm sure he was probably instructed not to be to aggressive on "D" because if he gets in foul trouble the Oilers weren't going to score. If your MVP is the player who helped his team finish high in the standings then Jones is a good choice. If it's the best player then Copeland is your man.Did they ever put out a complete list??
  13. Now that's big time. These 2 are really good kids.Couldn't have a better duo to carry that torch.
  14. I got a call from my sister who was at the tournament. She said the girl from Nimitz was the best high school player she had ever seen. That covers lots of girls, she must really be special.
  15. You gotta HAND (pun intended ;))it to the Huntington coach that year. That was the only way that club had a prayer and at the end of the day a win is a win.I would never question a winning coaches strategy.
  16. Can't argue with the young guy from Spurger being the coach of the year,he did a great job.I think SP would have been the runner up with or without #30.He was a solid player but they had more depth than the folks behind them in the race.I think the MVP should be the best overall player in the district regardless of where his club finishes. If you would have a mock draft out of the players in this district Copeland would be the first player picked. While AAU clubs may help with individual skills,SP needs to get involved in a good league as a team if they want to improve as a club.
  17. Not any weak sisters left in that line up.Good luck guys.
  18. This should answer any questions that were posed about the Hawks coaching staff. While it is certainly the kids that play the game these guys have done an amazing job of putting this team in a position to win.Congrats on the berth at the drum and good luck on your continued journey.
  19. While everyone has a different opinion on what the district MVP is I believe it is meant to be the best player in the district. That award should go to Tyler Copeland. While I don't have any scoring averages in front of me I think the offensive POY should be Daniel Blankenship. In the games I saw he scored both off the dribble and was a good 3-pt shooter as well.Whittacre was good defensive stopper and rebounder so I'll agree with the defensive nod.Jones should definitely be a unanimous first team pick.
  20. This was a brand new club in Spurger this year. The only thing missing going in to the season was experience and they took a GIANT step this year in that regard. While I'm a big fan of last years coach and the group of players he had, they have moved on.They should hold a special place in the Pirate fans hearts. This years group is building to that same type goal. The young new coach they have will do a great job because he has a genuine desire to teach the game and a group of young men who will put in the work in the off season to be successful.I said at the beginning of this season to give these guys a chance to get a little experience before you put a lot of expectations on them. They now have that experience and should be one of the favorites to come out of this region next year.Don't be surprised if you see the Pirates in Austin next season.Congrats guys on great season.
  21. Congrats to NW on the win and the state berth. They have been my pick to return out of region 3 since I saw them early in the season. You gotta congratulate Sabine ,anyway you look at it,If you play in the finals in region 3 you have a very good ball club. It's always harder on the parents to lose these games than it is the kids.Congrats to both clubs, the region is full of teams that would have loved to be in this conversation.
  22. It has alot to do with exposure but even more to do with the small school coaches and who they know in the college ranks. There aren't a lot of small school players who can play at the D-1 level. There a bunch of them who are as good as some of the Mid Major,D-2 and JUCO kids who don't have the connections to get a look.None of this applies to Donahoe,he could have played regardless of what size high school he was in.You bring up an interesting point Dove,if a kid has aspirations of playing college ball he may want to move in to a larger district.
  23. I think it's: NW vs Arp Newton vs Sabine NW vs Sabine in the finals with NW making a return trip to the drum. I hope I'm wrong because I'm pulling for Kountze and Newton.
