  1. After watching the highlights of Ned/PNG it probably should have been covered in the obituaries. It was not a thing of beauty.
  2. I ejected myself at Spurger a couple of years ago, because they were so sorry. Now that's funny,I don't care who you are ;D ;D ;D
  3. I don't have a home team in this discussion, just a fan who watches a lot of ball. For the most part the officials usually don't determine the outcome of these games.Except sometimes in Spurger where I have seen numerous fans and coaches ejected over the years.
  4. I went and watched the HJ girls play the Silsbee girls on friday.Didn't have the huge crowd but there were no fights, great sportsmanship and a well played game.I hadn't heard anything this year about #14 from Silsbee but this young lady can play.Anyone know what grade she's in?The Lady Hawks were pretty banged up but just keep finding a way to win.
  5. After half the season this is what I saw: A very equal district with probably not a 6 point difference in the 1st place team and the last place team. The good news is everyone is in the hunt for the playoffs. The bad news is there isn't a real good club in the district.Someone is going to have to win some games on the road to seperate from the pack.I think Spurger/SP and HD make the playoffs but I don't have a clue who should be the favorite.
  6. The assigner for the Thursday night games is completely different than the one for the sub varsity or JV games on Tuesday and Friday. Some officials simply don't sign up to do Jr High games so on any given Thursday night you could have 25 not working. The Jr High games are normally easy ones to call but the drawback is the early start times make it tough for an official to get there. The problem with UIL officials calling the headline game is takes a local crew to call a JV game that could otherwise be working a VB/VG game somewhere else in the chapter.I couldn't blame an officating crew for not coming to HJ to call a JV game when they could go right on down the road to WH and call a JV/VG/VB tilt and pick up a decent game check. These days 1 sub varsity game won't buy your gas.
  7. I can certainly understand a coach scratching an official in a game of this magnitude.I also can see where the coaches would agree to let the UIL provide the officials,I've seen it several times over the years. The problem is simple numbers with the officials. They just don't have enough of them to send a crew to work a sub varsity game. While there are some problems in the Beaumont Chapter there are also some very good officials.Mike Simpson does a great job of training young officials but the chapter needs to do a better job of recruiting the younger folks who should be calling these type games.I know these folks well enough to know there was no vendetta to punish HJ and Silsbee. At 3 pm on game day the scheduler has more on their mind than that.
  8. Copeland is a better basketball player than he is a football player.I can't see him playing football unless it would be at a small Juco or possibly a D-3 school and there isn't a ton of tuition money there. If that's his first love I wish him the best but 6'4" guards who can shoot the long ball and handle the ball like he can are a pretty rare commodity.
  9. The Hawks strength is defense. They give up less than 40 points a game so Kountze would struggle to put up 68.Dawg,I don't know how many times you have seen the Hawks but they are a lot deeper than Moore.I've seen both clubs and I would give the edge to HJ because of depth.Moore is the fastest girl I've ever seen from one end to the other and can shoot the ball very well.Southerland has been one of the best in the area this season from behind the arc and is a solid defender. The biggest advantage for the Hawks however would be at the post,Fontenot is playing very well on both ends of the floor.Just FYI-the Hawks beat Orangefield at Orangefield by 17 in a game where Moore played about 1 1/2 quarters due to foul trouble.I would like the matchups here with Hargraves,Deaver and Johnson going against Moore,Southerland and Fontenot but the ones you overlook for HJ are King and Sandlin who can also shoot the long ball very well.I hope the clubs take care of business because I think this game may be a real possibility. Both of these clubs could very well be in the regional tourney with a little luck.
  10. I enjoy watching Spurger.I brought a team over there for years when coach Stappert was there. The kids always play hard and this young coach will do great. In Copelands defense he has absolutely no help.Even when he breaks down the defense WH doesn't have anyone to take the dish and score. So he basically puts the team on his back and does what he can.If you want to see the difference in him and the rest of these kids get some tape of his sophomore season and watch him when he had some players with him.He could really be a special player if he had some help.I don't know why he didn't move down the road to HJ.
  11. While staying in the weight room is important it won't get you ready to play basketball. You have to stay in the gym. This is a great bunch of kids but they played 1 tournament last summer and 6 league games, thats simply not enough to prepare for a season. You don't develope shooters in a season so the coach puts the ball in the kids hands who give him the best chance to win.I certainly won't argue their hustle, they play as hard as any I've ever watched they just struggle putting points on the board.I still think the shot at the coach was a cheap one,the guy has won over 500 ballgames so he has to know a little about the game.
  12. No need to take shots at Cris. The last time I looked Warren didn't have but 3 players on the bench and they were as good as most of the starters(even if they aren't seniors). This group is paying the price now for not putting in the work last summer and in the off season. They have won 12 games and that is more than most people thought they would win.Deweyville beat them at Warren by 10 so it will probably be a rough night for the Warriors but it won't be the coaches fault. If Cody plays well it will be pretty close,if not D-Ville will win by a dozen.
  13. I totally agree I would even go as far as saying Daniel is just as good as Copeland. Come on now.One team holds Copeland to 27 and then 28 and their pleased. On an off night he hits 17 and people are talking about the defense???If you'll search my post you'll find I said all Blankenship had to do was realize how good he could be and Spurger would be on their way.He is starting to realize that. You'll see on my top 5 players I have him as Spurgers best, because he is,but he isn't in the same league as Tyler Copeland. No one in this district is this year. ;)
  14. whsalum and The_Gladiator just wished ur town/team had a point guard like McGallion!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't lump me in with The Gladiator.I just made a simple observation.I pick up the paper every week now and look for the best game and that's where I go.I don't have a team,I am a BASKETFALL fan.I have seen just about every team in SeTx this year and comment as to what I see.If you'll look at my post I put Chase in the top 5 players in the district.Which in my opinion he is one of the top 5 but the district overall is weak.My quote above was concerning the "I have watched him for years" statement which I stand by.If he didn't start last year and your midway through the season you had to be watching either Jr.High or Little Dribblers, that's not a put down it's a fact.Sports Talk you are right,if I was starting a team and looking for a good young point guard I would certainly take Chase on my team,I just wouldn't say I had watched him for years.I gotta disagree with Gladiator about Spurgers club, they are headed in the right direction.
  15. He's just a sophomore and he didn't pay a ton last year so if you watched him for years it had to be in little dribblers.I'm not sure that would count JMO : : :
  16. If I were a member of this years Hornet club I would throw rocks at Villamez if he showed up to play next year. These kids are showing a lot of heart hanging close after a tough season.
  17. Going in to the season I would have given Silsbee the edge simply because HJ graduated 8 players.I saw the Tigers play alot this summer and they looked to be real strong heading in to the season.HJ didn't look to strong in the post early on but that part of their game while not getting much recognition has been the most improved part. All that being said yoy just don't beat HJ at home so I'll take the Hawks by 6 in the opener. HJ-76 Silsbee-70.
  18. The biggest thing keeping the Lions from Austin is New Waverly,Newton and Anahuac. They will have a tough time making it to the regional tourney this year.
  19. You couldn't lose with either one of these as the head coach. Probably a co head coach title in the negotiations going on somewhere as we speak.
  20. The sport has lost a very courageous lady.I guess the big guy needed someone to help keep Jimmy V in line.
  21. The better team usually wins.Come on trophyman give em their credit. They must have been the better team tonight.I must be missing something on the Rebels,I don't see them in the playoff picture and I sure don't see them winning the district. Come to the next game...it's not a far drive...I'll make sure you get in free and you can make a fresh assessment of the Rebels. These days I usually pick up the paper and see who I think will be the best game to watch and go check them out.I didn't know much about the Rebels so I went and watched them actually 3 times this year. They look better than they did last year but still are a ways away from being a playoff team. Now the girls are the real deal, they will win the district going away.
  22. Don't get in a buffet line with Coach Sims you might get hurt : : :
  23. The better team usually wins.Come on trophyman give em their credit. They must have been the better team tonight.I must be missing something on the Rebels,I don't see them in the playoff picture and I sure don't see them winning the district.
  24. This will put EC in the drivers seat for the 3rd spot.I would have missed this one.I thought D-ville would win this one. Can't figure the pirates out, they aren't playing up to their potential right now.
  25. I dont know what you mean about the district being not as deep in good players because the youngest whittaker is averaging more blocks and pts than his brother. The kid from SP droped 32pts copeland is copeland and Blankenship had 28 against SP. Everyone has been playing better for evadale. The Talent is there trust me. Elliot can shoot but he doesnt seemed to be the game changer that you say he is but he can shoot. I think there are 2-3 player better than elliot. I would like to see who you would start on a team out of all the player in the district be position. PG ? SG ? SF ? PF ? C ? I don't mean any disrespect to this years players but this district last year produced both Region 3 finalist and it's champion played in the state championship game. The young Whittacre kid is gonna be a good one no doubt but he isn't the player Phillip was yet.You cant really compare stats because Phillip was doing it against some very good competition. The 5 best players in this district last year were: Copeland McKinney Tolar Whittacre Sheffield That's why I say the district is a little weaker this year.I don't think this years group would be close to that.Everyone on that list was either all state or all region I believe.I haven't seen Sabine Pass so I can't rate their guards but from what I've seen my top picks this year would be: Copeland-WH Elliott-HD Blankenship-Spurger Whittacre-Spurger McGallion-Spurger
