Jan 6th---Goodrich 110 Centerville 13 final
whsalum replied to alloutballer's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Dang, Payback could be a bit : : -
Darn baseball25 tell us how you really feel.I'll have to agree with some of your post about Davis. He would be the best PG in the district this year but I don't think he would make Hardin a playoff team.He benefitted last year from Marsh and Nolan and would be the sole focus of the defenses this year. The guards from Anahuac and Kountze are both solid but they also have good players around them.I've never heard of the young man from EC but if he was as good as these 3 they would have a lot better record with Raymond and Carrington down low.The attack on Andrews was unneccesary,he's not a point guard in any form or fashion and he has to shoot it a ton if Warren is gonna score.I've gotta agree with ya about the district this year as a whole it is down terribly.

Rankings and 50 cents this time of year will get you a cheap cup of coffee ;)Relax and play ball.
-
Usually by this time of the season there are teams that have started to seperate themselves but this district is crazy.HD comes out and plays Kountze to 4 and then loses to BS by 30.I thought they would be the favorite early followed by Spurger but no one is playing consistant ball right now.Spurger is young but improving.I may check them out tomorrow night against Broaddus.I know it's possible for everyone to have an off game but I don't see many powers here. My 3 picks in the opener are HD,Spurger and WH.

yea "maby"...and if number 12 didnt give cody open shots he would average about 2 pts instead of his 30...theres many ways to look at it...if young kept the ball every time and shot 50 % he would lead the team in scoring...but i "wud" say that #12 is a HUGE part of codys scoring...he cant shoot well and knows it...but he does his job, which is to get cody open...brandon keep dishin and cody keep knockin em down!!!...the win is much more important than stats...if last years team thought that way they would have gone alot further :-\...and this is my last post on this thread...GO WARRIORS!!! Very well put Waa-town! It sounds like the 07-08 Warriors need to get over it and support the Warriors this season and hope that they can do better. Good Luck Warriors in District play. Don't lump the 07-08 Warriors in this thread. They have only had 1 player even posted in this topic. The 06-07 club started 4 of these same kids so they would have been playing themselves.FYI all of last years club has been supporting this years club. The ones that have been in from school have been to every game.Fact is last year is over and this years club is playing hard and should be supported by everyone in the community.Good luck tomorrow night guys ;D ;D

Best- Kirbyville Worst- Broaddus (old gym) Some folks are confusing this one with Brookelands). This gym was flat out dangerous if you dove for a loose ball.

Warren vs. Deweyville Predictions
whsalum replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This game should be pretty close. It will come down to who rebounds the ball the best will win it.D-Ville loves to run on the miss and Warren will slow it down if at all possible. If the game is in the 60 point range D-Ville will win it,if it stays in the 50- point range Warren will take it at home. -
I think a knee injury had more to do with the kid from HJ than his talent level.I know he had several D-1 offers on the table after his senior season.I saw every game at the state playoffs that year from 1-A to 5-A and I'm a firm believer that kid would have excelled on any club at the drum that season.Once again a players ability has absolutely nothing to do with the size of his school.Sadly a lot of small town kids these days transfer to bigger schools to get recognition.Did they get better,no,did they get more exposure, you bet they did.
-
It amazes me that anyone could think the number of A's behind your school can judge ones talent as a basketball player.Any of the guys you listed at the small school side would have been legit at the 4-a or 5-a level. The biggest misconception on the small school side comes from the post position.A 6'2" post player may be all state at the high school level but he's not going anywhere to play college ball. The D-1 guards now are all 6'3" and up are all pretty equal in their skills. The biggest difference in the recruiting comes from the high school coaches ability to sell their kids. One thing that is historically overlooked in recruiting is character.A ton of kids are recruited and never see the opening day because of lackluster work ethic. The biggest obstacle Robinson would have playing college ball would be size but he would be able to play for Ozen,Central,WB or Memorial ;)

23-AA What's Your Thoughts As The Real Season Starts?????
whsalum replied to whsalum's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
No disrepect to Buna but I don't think they are a contender. It will probably take a 7-5 record to get the third spot. They lost their opener to Warren and I dont see them beating Anahuac or Kountze,so they would probably have to sweep everyone else to get in.That's a long shot at best. They may sweep Hardin but will have tough time beating any of the other clubs on the road.A 4-8 record would be a good job by the Cougars.(I really like what I've seen out of their young coach). -
Okay folks, the pre season and tournaments are history and 23AA looks like a completely different animal this year. What is everyone thinking about the playoff chances of these clubs this year.I have had a chance to watch most of them so here's my take. 1. Anahuac-They were my preseason pick and they still look like the favorite to me.If Rivon and the big kid stay healty and eligible they could be in the regional tournament this year. 2. Kountze-They have really missed Walker. He hasn't looked like himself since hurting the knee this past summer. They will beat most teams in the district with their defensive pressure but I don't think they have the dominant scorer to get them back to Tyler this year. 3.Deweyville-The next 3 positions will be wide open with the Pirates,EC and Warren all being pretty close.Deweyville looks to be pretty balance with Caswell and Avilla scoring and Estes doing a pretty good job on the boards. 4. EC- They have 2 of the better post players in the district but I look for them toreally struggle against the better pressure defensive clubs like Anahuac and Kountze. 5. Warren-They could very easily get in to the 3rd spot if they get a little better on the boards. They also need to give Andrews some help on the offensive end.Young has the ability to get by just about anyone on the dribble,he just needs to learn to finish.Good defensive club but a little small. 6. Buna-Finally gets out of the cellar this year and will win 3 or 4 district games. 7. Hardin-They really miss Davis.I never dreamed they would fall this far after losing Marsh and Nolan. Okay TopDawg,SteelerCrazy and ECBUC fan what do yall think.

I got the opportunity to check out the guys several times over the last 3 weeks. They are playing good aggressive defense which will keep you in a lot of ballgames. If they can keep getting Cody the open looks they will be competetive thru the district schedule.Congrats guys.I don't guess the defensive adjustments worked this time around for the Rebels.Warren must have done a pretty good job on the boards this time around against the Rebels,I thought that was what hurt them the last time they played against Evadale.

Spurger vs. Deweyville Predictions?
whsalum replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I wasn't making excuses simply commenting on these type tournament brackets versus the old type brackets where you had to play your way in to the winners bracket. When you won you were rewarded by playing later games and you played in the better gyms.I would hope no one would need an excuse after beating a JV club ;) -
Nothing wrong with supporting your team.Anyone that has been around high school basketball knows you don't punch your ticket to the drum in November or December. There will be a lot of evenly matched clubs in this region, the one that gets the breaks will go to Austin.

Spurger vs. Deweyville Predictions?
whsalum replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I am saying there is a huge advantage to playing at home in the early game when the visiting team has to travel a long distance. This is a perfect example. If this game is played at a later start time I think you would see a much tighter ballgame. As far as Kirbyville I wasn't making excuses for them ,just stating a fact. They have been on the basketball court 2 weeks while Spurger has been on it 2 1/2 months.Just found it kind of odd they would schedule there ex coach on what most people would think would be the championship game instead of playing a traditional bracket and letting the best teams wind up in the championship game. This isn't a knock on any of the teams ,it's just my opinion on this type format. -
Spurger vs. Deweyville Predictions?
whsalum replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
There is definitely a home court advantage to play in this format.Spurger will play D-ville in the first game at 10:30.The D-ville club will have to get up before daybreak to get to Spurger and play that early. You still can get the same amount of games with the old type brackets.I look at this tournament set up as a way to showcase a game with last years coach. If your gonna do that he should be given a chance to get a little practice in before his team plays in a game like this.Huge difference here in preperation time. -
Spurger vs. Deweyville Predictions?
whsalum replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
If I read this bracket right the teams are already chosen to play at each round (with the team with the best record winning the tournament).I hate this format because you should have your best 2 teams playing in the final game ,if the brackets are set up correctly. In this tournament you should have Spurger/Deweyville in the final game because they are the 2 best clubs in it.I think Spurger will win it this year in a close game with Deweyville.I know it's hard to evaluate what teams will have when you extend invitations a year ahead of time but this field isn't anywhere close to what it was last year. Logansport/Brookeland was a very good ballgame in last years championship. -
Spurger vs. Deweyville Predictions?
whsalum replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
These 2 clubs are virtually dead even.Deweyville won the first meeting but they know what it's like to play Spurger at home in their own tourney. On a neutral floor I would take D-ville but here I think Spurger will win it in a close one by 4. Spurger-56 Dville-52 -
The last thing you want a real shooter to do is quit shooting the basketball.Brandon is very capable of beating the defense,he just doesn't finish when he gets to the rim.I have watched these kids for years and regardless of Codys percentages he is the most accurate option they have.If he's on and getting open looks(which will be a challenge from here on out)they have a shot at winning if not they will struggle to score.I heard a quote once from Larry Bird,he said anyone can go 0-10,it takes a real shooter to go 0-20.He was talking to Reggie Miller.Don't quit shooting the ball Cody,it's what you do best.Shooters have to get in a rythm and I think Cody shot it twice in the first quarter, that won't get it.Good luck next week guys in Woodville.
-
Evadale will definitely be capable of beating Buna.Should be a real close ballgame, both clubs are pretty evenly matched. Both teams play hard which is a tribute to their coaching staffs when you look at their records.

Woodville Eagles Holiday Classic Dec. 29-31
whsalum replied to mlmcoach4u's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Where is Miller Grove? I thought I had been in every gym in southeast texas. -
I didn't mean the officials cost Warren the game. Both clubs were over the limit in the first half.Just found it odd for a team to press an entire half and get called for 1 foul.Bottom line is Warren didn't shoot the ball well enough to win.For this group to win they have to get Andrews in the flow of the game early, tonight that didn't happen.
-
Warren didn't shoot the ball well but I didn't see much defensive pressure by either club tonight.Evadale ran a token press and fell back in to a 1-3-1 for most of the game.Warren's guards got a lot of looks but couldn't convert. Can't comment on the foul shooting because Evadale was only called for 1 foul in the second half.Evadale won this game on the boards plain and simple. After their meeting earlier this year Warren took the night off and it cost them.

**TABC Girls State Rankings (Dec. 22)**
whsalum replied to Bobcatfan4life's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Even though they lost last year in the playoffs they had the go to player that kept them in it until the very last second.Over the past several years all your good local clubs had 1 of those type players.O-field had Little,Lumberton had Pickering and Wilson,WOS had the 2 Brittany's,Silsbee had Green,HJ had Bernsen. All those clubs were ranked at one time or another and deservedly so.There just aren't alot of those type players in the area this year.I hope the girls prove me wrong,I like to see the local teams do well.
