The Future of Deweyville Football
whsalum replied to youmeandthem's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
He's not the player I was referring to.The kid I was talking about graduated 2 years ago and took the Pirates to the playoffs. -
Coach Brooks will do a great job with a young group of players.
-
I think the loss to Dobie is one the players and coaches felt like they had the opportunities to win,the shots just didn't fall. They evened their record Saturday at 2-2.They are headed in the right direction.

The Future of Deweyville Football
whsalum replied to youmeandthem's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Fact is it wouldn't have mattered who coached the Pirates this year. They are the smallest school in the district and that makes it tough on them. They always play hard and every so often they have a exceptional athlete come thru the system like they had a couple of years ago(I think his name was Addison) that makes the Coach, whoever he is look pretty good. The disparity in size of the 2-a schools ,top to bottom, is the problem not the coaching staff. The good young coaches gotta start somewhere and the older established ones aren't standing in line to come to a small 2-a school.I don't buy the seniors won't play for the guy argument. If they want to play they will get on the field,if not they will spend the next 40-50 years wishing they had.Ever wonder why our kids don't want to go into coaching? : : : -
Buna...Tradition, Now that's two words that you normally don't see together.I picked Buna as my pre season favorite this year(shows how much I know). They gotta be disappointed. They are the largest school in the district and finished 4th in what is a relatively weak 2-a district. No knock on the coaches because I don't even know them but you would think Buna should be a district favorite just because of numbers.Maybe the "wing T" or "wishbone" is on the horizon. : : :

Evadale beat Buna in the 3rd place game by a dozen and E/C beat Warren in the championship by around 20.Hope the young lady from EC is ok.Looked like the ankle injury could have been severe.
-
Thats not unusual with a young club. The kid that played the point with the knee brace is going to develop in to a pretty good player. The Whittaker boy is also going to make a pretty good player although he struggled with his shot last night.I didn't see the threat to hit the 3 last night that the Pirates had last year.

Kountze At Lumberton Predictions
whsalum replied to TopDawG52's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Lumberton catches a break playing Kountze real early so the Lions win by 25. Kountze-75 Lumberton-50 -
I don't see where Hardin is going to get any offense from. They lost Marsh,Nolan and Davis to injury which was all of there scoring punch.E/C lost Thomas and McDonald but will have Raymond and Carrington who can score some. The Bucs may struggle with the pressure "D" they will see from Kountze and Anahuac, thats why I pick them 3rd.If they slow the game down against these 2 they can keep it close if not they lose big.

Did jarvis do good in the scrimage against kounze

I didn't see but a couple players on the floor for either club that was 5'9" and no one close to 6'9".Now there were several that would have tipped 4'9" with the air Jordan's on. PS. Master T don't let setxslam fool ya,he's smarter than average "gansta" ;) -
BIG SANDY @ JASPER 11-18-08 WHO WILL WIN THIS ONE
whsalum replied to CATMAN's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
If Jasper doesn't have Bailey and Spikes BS wins a close one.If the football team is eliminated Jasper wins by 8. -
Onalska won't be real strong so I'll take Spurger by a dozen.I didn't see where they were going to get a lot of offense from so I'll say: Spurger-52 Onalaska-40
-
Big Sandy had the lead after the the first 2 quarters.Spurger led at the end of the next 2.Both clubs had all there kids because neither plays football. Both clubs will be respectable but neither had the strong inside game they had last year.BS turned the ball over way to much trying to make the entry pass but Foster will correct that I'm sure.Spurger looked about like I thought they would with a really young club. Both clubs scored in the 40 pt range so neither really lit it up.I was surprised neither club played any pressure defense.I expected to see that from the Pirates because they are pretty small but will be quick enough to press some.

Gotta respectfully disagree OT30.When the Wildcats needed someone to steady the ship last year they pounded it inside to McKinney. The 2 guys they have playing the post this year will do a good job but neither is the player McKinney was.I was impressed with 2 of there guards in the first half at Spurger tonight #23 and #24.They played well,Coach Foster looked at lots of players in the second half and the Wildcats struggled a little.Overall it was a good workout and will help get BS ready for the season.

Did jarvis do good in the scrimage against kounze

Read my post Dawg.Jarvis did struggle from behind the arc and at the FT line. You won't see him go 3-13 many times from behind the arc when he's getting the looks he got Thursday. If he's stroking it like he usually does this one would have gotten ugly. PS-Roman just got alot better tonight when the football team closed there season. With the guards joining the Lions Saturday his game will go to a different level. -

I am a big Walker fan as well.I said repeatedly last year he was Kountzes best player and will be the best in 23aa this year.I don't have a dog in this fight but have seen both kids alot.I feel like both these kids are in the top 10 in the area and Roman will definitely hold his own day in and day out but Thursday Jarvis was the best player on the floor. -

Probably wouldn't be fair to evaluate Jarvis on this scrimmage.Everyone knows what he is capable of.Last night he was kind of out of his normal role knowing he had to carry the load.He struggled a little from the free throw line and his long ball was a little off early but that is to be expected early in the year.He is a shooter who can and will fill it up from outside.Last night he went to hoop when his outside shot wasn't falling which is what all good players do.He was no doubt the best player on the floor yesterday.Jarvis will be fine. -
WHO IS THE BEST BIG MAN IN THE STATE THIS YEAR.
whsalum replied to CATMAN's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Now thats a legit post.Thats probably a lot closer to the topic of this thread. -
Actually the final was 89-72 but it's really not that important what the final was in this one.The game was about what I expected with both teams missing lots of players.I may be wrong but I don't think either line up will resemble what I saw tonight once the season gets rolling. Both teams played hard which is what you expect from these two clubs.I was surprised at the lack of size on both clubs tonight both teams put a real small lineup on the floor.
-
A 2-3 matchup zone is an excellent defense and is anything but a lazy mans defense. When ran right it will have all the characteristics of a man.Gotta agree with HJ about disguising the looks to keep the offense from getting comfortable.Regardless of which defense you run,the folks that are the most agressive are the ones that are successful year in and year out.

WHO IS THE BEST BIG MAN IN THE STATE THIS YEAR.
whsalum replied to CATMAN's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Are you serious??? On the small schoolside the 2 that standout are Ross from Newton and Walker from Kountze. Not a lot of big guys in SeTexas this year. 1A only im not considering bigger schools or anywhere but SETX, he will stand out in 1A No disrepect intended to Whittacre,he is going to be a fine player.Just remeber he is pretty young and will take awhile for him to develope.Probably would be a stretch to call him a big man,he's probably about 6'1 or 6'2 and close to 175lbs.He may be the best post player in this district, not sure what any of the other clubs have in the paint. -
Lots of basketball to be played before anyone starts talking about going to the drum. Not only will folks have to have a tremendous club to get that far they also have to very lucky along the way.

Anyone have a breakdown on the Spurger/Brookeland/Jasper scrimmage on Tuesday? How did the clubs look, strengths, weaknesses etc? -
I was glad to see the youth football program kicked off in Warren.I hope it has the desired results.I have watched the other youth programs be pretty successful in Warren for years but it doesn't always translate to wins at the varsity level.Gotta agree with ya about the young guys on the line this year. They did their best but were just overmatched.Probably one of their best players this year we both forgot to mention was Stephen Derouen,he played with tremendous heart all year.
