  1. Very interesting quote at the bottom of your post and a very true one. There are no good reason for quitting. It becomes easier every time.
  2. Sims is nursing a sprained ankle, hope both are ready to go.
  3. The ones in Zavalla this weekend were as bad as I've ever seen. Not just at 1 game but overall(I watched Newton-Corrigan,Woodville-Slocum and Warren-Brookeland).In several of these contest the officials were more interested in fan interaction than they were calling the game. What they lose sight of is they take the game out of the players hands and make themselves the center of attention. The tall official in the Warren-Brookeland game made it a point to be the center of that ballgame, not only with some Warren fans but also the Brookeland coach. His co-official attemted to even the foul count somewhat late in the game but the outcome was already decided by then.I tend to watch games from a different perspective as an ex official and while some of these are personal issues most are lack of training.Very poor fundamentals and not enough experience to be calling varsity ballgames. In the past you never saw division 4 or 5 officials calling varsity games. The bottom line is numbers, they just don't have enough officials to cover the busy tournament weekends.
  4. Don't know what your personal history is with Hand and I don't care.I just give credit where its due and the man taught shooting at Warren Texas.Like him or not you had to respect 7 trips to the state tourney.I quess thats a topic for another thread,I didn't mean to hijack this one.
  5. I hate to down any team, especially WH because I am a big fan of Copelands but they don't play this one close if everyone is healthy.Hardin wins this one by 20 if the coach is nice. Hardin 68 WH 48
  6. Amen.Very few pure shooters around these days.Bernard from HJ can get on a roll from downtown and fill it up,not the best form in the world but it works for him.Two of the better pure shooters in this area are from small schools,Tyler Copeland from West Hardin and Paul Sims from Warren.I know Leland Hand taught shooting form at Warren just like a class. The kids there spent hours on the wall before they even got to step on the court.
  7. I have had a chance to watch every team in this district this year and HJ is plain and simple the best club in this district. While it is possible for anyone to have an off night the Hawks win in a way that makes it unlikely. They win with there defensive pressure much like Kountze did last year.Silsbee probably has the best chance to upset them followed by Jasper. While Orangefield has a pretty good club they don't have the depth at the guard position to consistantly beat the press. The biggest challenges the Hawks have they may not can control, injuries and grades are about the only thing I see that could derail them.Good luck HJ hope yall go back to back.
  8. I haven't seen D-Ville but 3 times this year but everytime I've seen them the coach distributed the playing time pretty equally.Early in the season coaches will take different looks at different combinations.Sometimes if you aren't a dominate player starting is highly overated.Never did believe in quitting once you've started.Whatever the circumstances it's a shame for the kid to not enjoy his senior season.
  9. EC is playing a very tough schedule that should get them ready for district.Right now they don't look to be playing real well. The Hawks have the defensive scheme to take Thomas out of the game.Unless the Hawks have a let down after the Chapel Hill game they win this one by 20.It's easy for high school players to have a let down after a big game but the game is at HJ. HJ-76 EC-56
  10. Lord lets let them play the games on Tuesday before we predict what happens on Friday ;D ;D ;D
  11. I was impressed with the tournament field as well.I watched Woodville and Slocum in an overtime game Friday.I also got to see Newton and Corrigan as well as Lufkin and Wells.Pretty good basketball being played.Incredibly bad timing by some of Warren's seniors for the second week in a row in scheduling ACT or SAT test.Makes it tough on the rest of the team.I think Newton is definitely the favorite this year in 23-aa.I didn't see any real good shooters but they are extremely athletic and are big on the block.I heard Lufkin brought a completely different club Friday than the one they had Thursday.I was impressed with the group they had on Thursday.
  12. Wished I'd known you were there I would have introduced myself.I was in a white shirt beside the guy in the orange shirt.I spent most of the second half trying to keep the high school principle out of jail. :D .Not one of the better performances by officials I have seen and I usually give them the benefit of the doubt.Brookeland has a pretty good ballclub this year.
  13. I was afraid he wouldn't recover from the shoulder injury he suffered at Warren.Thats a shame for the young man in his senior season. He had a ton of potential as a sophomore.
  14. Does anyone know what time Deweyville and Spurger boys play Saturday.
  15. The last 7 minutes of this game was very intense.Warren was playing shorthanded from the start but the foul count was questionable to say the least. The kids off the bench should get a look after todays game ,they played with a lot of heart.Warren hit 13 -3's as team.Sims and Lil Cody Andrews lit it up in the fourth.Sims played the entire second half with a badly sprained ankle.
  16. Brookeland- 17 41 64 82 Warren- 17 32 48 78 Sims39(7-3ptrs) 8/10 ft line. "Lil"Cody Andrews 20. Game recap:Warren had 2 starters and 1 sub missing due to ACT test. They had 3 players foul out and played the last 7:02 of the ballgame with 4 players. They cut a 22 point deficit to 1 with 23 seconds left before fouling late and losing by 4.The kids played with as much heart as I've ever seen.Cody Andrews,Blake Riley, James Blackshear and Paul Sims left it all on the court today.Good job guys.
  17. Brookeland-82 Warren-78 Brookeland- 17 41 64 82 Warren - 17 32 48 78 Sims 39-(7-3ptrs)8/10 ft line.Lil Cody Andrews-20. Game recap:Warren had 3 kids missing taking ACT(2 starters)and had 3 foul out. They played the final 7:02 with 4 players and cut a 22 point lead down to 1.The kids that were left on the floor at the end played as hard as any I've ever seen.Cody Andrews,James Blackshear,Blake Riley and Paul Sims left it all on the court today.I've heard in other post about East Texas officiating but I witnessed it first hand today.Brookeland has a fine ballclub and this is in no way directed toward them. The officials let this one get out of hand.
  18. Congrats girls on the 2-0 start.Good mixture of youth and seniors on this club.Have been very impressed with Coach Brooks, the lady knows her stuff.
  19. Warren-74 Wells-53 Warren 20 43 58 74 Wells 12 24 37 53 Andrews -26 6/6 ft line. Sims - 23 (3-3ptrs).Swinney-11. Good job guys.Gonna have 3 kids missing Saturday morning taking ACT test hopefully the guys will turn it up a notch against a good Brookeland club.
  20. Warren didn't play Brookeland today, they played Wells. They play Brookeland at 8:30 Saturday morning. They have half the club taking ACT test tomorrow so the rest of the boys will have to turn it up a notch.
  21. Larry does a good job with the club.A coach will never satisfy all the kids or parents, that's the down side of coaching.Schedules vary from year to year because you can't forecast teams strengths in 1-a basketball 2 years ahead which is when home and away scedules are set.He definitely had them ready to play this year when they came to Warren. The biggest challenge for any of the non football school is peaking to early.I think that is what has happened to Spurger a couple of times over the last few years. While the future looks bright for Spurger this years team success will depend on Whittacre and Sheffield(Seniors),it's not fair to the coach or the kids to expect miracles out of The freshman group. They will be in the playoffs this year.JMO.
  22. Hardin has already beaten EC once and they played football a week longer.Don't overlook Hardin,Anahuac,Warren or Deweyville or it will be a mistake.
  23. I know the kids aren't pleased but this was a pretty good ballgame.Warren had a chance to put it away with a 57-51 lead in the 4th,just couldn't quite pull it off. Can't fault the effort kids played hard just gotta play a little smarter at times.I was surprised at how big the Lufkin club was. They are all juniors but 2 according to the program and quite a bit bigger than Warren was.
