candidates for the HF basketball Job
whsalum replied to UNT-AggieMan's topic in High School Boys Basketball
Kind of a head scratcher here. They had 2 great basketball applicants and a great former head coach on the staff already and a young assistant the community wanted. I wonder what his other coaching duties will be? -

What’s your opinion of the new coach? -

Watched a game or two over the years so I’d like to think I’ve learned a little about the game. HF’s best player wasn’t in great shape in the second meeting against Huffman but foul trouble is what kept him sidelined not conditioning. I think the Longhorns were 2-3 in their last 5 games with their players back. I will admit however those 3 losses were to Huffman, HJ and Silsbee which were better clubs. The young man on the JV is going to be a nice addition but I don’t know if I would rank him as high as you do. I think HF’s JV club was 2nd or possibly 3rd in that district. I hope they get their coach hired soon where they can hit the court running in the fall. -

The biggest challenge a young coach would face at HF would be actually coaching the team. I know you know this team very well but sometimes I think you give them more credit than they deserve. Looking at them from a fan’s standpoint you see a club that finished their previous season tied for the 3-4 playoff spot. They were supposed to have a loaded JV club but finished either 2nd or 3rd at that level. I could be wrong but I didn’t see the ability to put up the scoring numbers you predict. I hope for the kids sake they get their coach hired pretty quick where they can all get on the same page. -

The times I saw the JV Coach Knowles was running the club. If they are looking for someone who knows the game he would be a great choice. Coach Williams would also be a great choice. If you’re worried about the team walking off the floor the first time someone gets on them they’re not going to be successful no matter who is on the bench. I’ve watched Coach Williams for years and while he is always animated I’ve never seen him belittle the kids. I would think HF would want a coach in place ASAP to give the new guy the chance to learn his club over the summer. -

I was at both games, neither was ever in doubt. Was the HF player who made the Super Gold team a senior?? -
Your brilliance is refreshing .

Was the post player the one that graduated? If so he’s going to be hard to replace. HF did have a some good young players and a standout guard on the JV. I think it’s worth mentioning however that they didn’t win the JV district with all that talent. HJ returns some really good players as well as a JV group that was 20-1. Huffman lost Harvey but they will be solid again next year.Should be fun to watch. -

He would be a great pick wherever he decides to go. He has a daughter who’s a helluva player on a team that should be in the state tournament again next year so he may not be looking to leave. -

I would think they’d make a hire pretty quick. -
I’m amazed no one has mentioned Barrett from Huffman in the COY discussion. Guy lost 2 games all season and one was the state championship. He beat some clubs with more talent. He did all this with one really good player and about 6 guys who bought in to a system.

What the heck Warren: Jacks out
whsalum replied to 5GallonBucket's topic in High School Girls Basketball
Sad to say this happens way to often in Warren. I’m glad my kids had intense coaches during their years there -
On the girls side we had a local coach who lost 1 game all season by 3 points in the state championship game and isn’t the COY. I ain’t sure I’m buying this local publications opinion.

They had one of the best coaches in the area as an assistant this past season. They have some good returning players,if, and that’s a big if, they come back. I still think they will finish 3rd in the district though. -

Who’s your all-setx sports top players/coaches
whsalum replied to Indians4life's topic in High School Boys Basketball
That’s certainly a legitimate argument but if there was any honorable mention it would have to go to Barrett from Huffman. He made it to the state championship game with a club full of role players and a floor general. Coach Green is one of the best in the area and deserves every accolade he gets this year, his staff is second to none as well!! -

No sir but at Kountze, HJ and EC he has. I Didn’t follow the Mustangs I don’t guess when he coached over there but with that stable of athletes he could very easily had them in the big dance as well. -

I love to watch up tempo basketball but at the high school level we have trouble getting substitutes buzzed in on dead balls in some locations. We’d have to have a 4th official to man the clock. -

The guy at East Chambers is one of the best around. He can beat ya with his or could beat ya with yours. It’s no coincidence that he has state tournament championships and appearances at every school he’s coached at.
