#17 Kountze vs #6 Teague regional Semi
whsalum replied to aTmfan06's topic in High School Boys Basketball
X2. Not knocking this years Kountze club but having seen them play several times this year to get within a game of the state tournament is an absolute great coaching job !! -
Those guys were really good but the group just before them I believe that had Busby and Powell had it all. Their pressure would just beat you up. Very good ball clubs in those days.

Good tight ball game. Good job Hawks !! -
This is playoff basketball, anyone who is looking at opponents for the regional tournament may well have to buy a ticket to see Friday's games.

Bryan is a great coach, my comment was in no way meant to slight him. My comment was in response to someone questioning Coach Joubert's job this year. The talent level on the two clubs this year was pretty equal and I believe they finished as co champs , faced each other 4 times and the results were 2-2. That's good stuff both ways.
-
I'm not knocking Kountze because they are always good. For this group to be in a seeding game and to be Co district champs Coach Joubert would have to be in the Coach of the Year conversation. At times this year he had to do it with smoke and mirrors. Duane Joubert is one of the best coaches is Se Texas .

When you have 1-6 clubs in the playoff hunt the system is broke.
-
Kountze is hard to beat twice in a season. Depth is their biggest issue and it will rear its head again I believe. I think the Cougars finally get it done 70-64. I wish both clubs the best but state may be a stretch.

Was Punishment to Hard on Devin Mccain

What in the world is going on these days with high school athletes and social media ? A player "tweets" an apology to a player and a community ? The incident followed a "twitter war" ?? Good lord folks implement a team policy that bans this form of communication. If you want to do it on a personal level get after it but as far as a team is concerned just don't hit send. -

Some officiating calls are always subjective and half the people will feel they got it wrong. One that comes to mind is the block/charge. It's the toughest call in basketball. What's not subjective is mechanics and appearance. In years past these were the first two things taught and they were gone over during every evaluation. We have some really good officials in the area but we also have some that need to get in front of the mirror and check out there mechanics. -

Thanks Steve Nash, I knew he was out on his feet for a second there. -

Playoffs don't start Tuesday. Their last district game is Tuesday against Liberty. The comment about the officials was spot on. I have seen every JV game this year and with the exception of a couple the officiating has been borderline comical. The 2 coaches from Tarkington were pretty darn good. HJ had a comfortable lead last night for just about the entire game with the spread being around 20 points for most of the night. Tarkington hit some late 3's and the Hawks had a little trouble late at the FT line. I think they will be at full strength and healthy going in to the playoffs. On a different note does anyone know how the young man is who got hurt at the end of the JV game? He took a pretty good fall and looked to possibly have a concussion. -
Great guy, I worked with his son for nearly 40 years. He was a character. RIP JP.

Will Silsbee win state or come up short.......again
whsalum replied to BADSANTA's topic in High School Boys Basketball
This is a tricky question. Basketball at any level is all about matchups and play on any given night. The Tigers have one of the best teams in the state no doubt about it but in a single elimination tournament the best team doesn't always win. The Tigers will just have to take em one game at a time after this week and see what happens. -

Did Cleveland have all their players ? I didn't see this one coming. -

The last 2 minutes of the first half really hurt the Hawks in this one. Good ball game . -
I think the Hawks go to Huffman on Tuesday.

Cleveland has as much talent as anyone in this district. They have lost 2 district games by 3 points. -
That's not to shabby
-
Depth is a problem for the Lions especially if they lose TJ. I had predicted a 75-70 final with the winner not losing their big gun to fouls. I was close

I have never seen a basketball game officiated like this in all my life and I have spent a lot of hours in the gym, even officiated quite a few games in my younger days. There were multiple calls over turned or changed down the stretch in this game. On one possession a block was called by one official, a charge by the other. The "dominant" official over ruled his counterpart. On another possession one of the HJ players wound up 2 rows deep in the stands but no official saw the shove that put him there. Play was stopped on at least 1 occasion where there was a wide open drive to the basket and no call made. Overall the mechanics of this crew was awful, no other way to put it. -
The first game was pretty vanilla, like a poker game where neither team wants to show their hand. This one will be close. Kountze should get a few points at home. The difference in this game will be whom ever stays out of foul trouble. 75-70 Don't know who fouls less

This was a very good game with a great atmosphere. HJ had every chance to win it but you gotta tip your cap to Huffman, they hit big shots when they had to. This district is pretty even in the top 3 spots.
