1.
Crockett is now 17-6.  I saw both of these teams play the other night.  I could not believe how little Kountze was.  Of course I am used to seeing Kountze's teams of the past in Austin.  They are doing a good job for such a young team though.  Crockett is way down from last yr's team.  They are still athletic but not real skilled.  They got a point guard #24 that thinks he is better than he is. He jacks it up from anywhere and everywhere or will drive and then dish off to the heavy set post on the backside block. I have seen all of the heavyweights play in this region and the winner of this game is in deep trouble in the next round against Tatum or Edgewood.
I have watched Kountze quite a bit this year and this evaluation is right on.This season could be Duanes best coaching job of his career.
2. And there you have what makes high school basketball the greatest game in the world.I have to agree with ECBuc08 on the EC kids.I have had the opportunity to make more than my share of trips to Winnie over the years and the kids and the fans are always top notch. The EC coach this year got all these kids had to give, sometimes the shot just falls at the buzzer.
3. They'll be fine.I hope they get their SS back before distict starts. They have a lot of depth but he is a lot of fun to watch.
4.
Warren is in this tournament
I heard Warren lost their opener to Onalaska7-5.I also heard today they lost their best player to injury. Tough way to start a year.
5. I can only conclude from looking at the small school side of this poll that SETX Sports expect Warren to finish 5th in 24aa.For a team that finished 2nd last year with a sophomore laiden squad I think this group may be under the radar.
6. Absolutely and always take the cap off.FYI The young lady at Silsbee will send chills up your spine when she sings it.She does a great job.
7. Size is the Lions Achilles this year. They play hard but just aren't anywhere near as big across the press as they have been in the past.I see them winning their first playoff game but probably not their second. The scores are misleading because the district clubs are not real strong this season.
8. Didn't know TJ was back in SETX. Welcome home coach.
9. High school basketball is played by 15-18 year old boys so you never know whats going to happen until you toss it up.The Yates club of a couple of years ago was one of the best I've ever seen but those don't come along every year.I think it will be good to see the talent level improve in our corner of the state. These Silsbee/Yates/HJ matchups will be a lot of fun to watch.
10. The amount of energy this game would take wouldn't be good for either club.I'm not a fan of taking any time off but these two clubs know each other too well already. They could schedule up and good some good work in to stay sharp.
11.
Funny thing about 3-point shooters. I know a kid out of Houston area who is a top prospect and listed on the ESPN ranking. He loves to shoot 3 pointers. I did a shot graph on him once. He attempted about nine 3's and made 1 or 2. My personal theory is that a three is like a dunk. Thru all the hoopla, it disguises your weaknesses. All the people remember are the one or two 3's he hit in that game. Another example is the kid on Baylor's team, Duece Bello. All everything in high school with his athletic dunks. Can dunk the ball 101 ways but can't shoot a jumper. Sitting his butt on the bench now. Ya gotta get the fundamentals down. Unless you're shooting 40% plus, you ain't no 3 point shooter. Anything less and you're probably hurting your team.
Anyone shooting 1/9 from behind the arc needs a seat beside the coach or at the very least be learning how to set pics.
12. You guys don't realize how fortunate you are to have these type games where attendance is an issue.I have watched more than my share of high school and college basketball over the years and it doesn't get much better than this on the high school level.I hate to take up a spot from one of the 2 schools folks but I'll be there just to watch high school basketball as it should be played.FYI-There are far worse things than gathering eggs :)
13. No reason to get beat that bad where you don't have a shot clock, let the air outta the ball for christ sakes. There are always ways to stop the bleeding. In all seriousness I wonder if Chester ever considered consolidating with Colmesneil. They could form a respectable school district in a hurry.
14.

Kountze has improved tremendously since the end of December. I'll take them by 15+ at home.
or their competition has grown weaker. ;)
I disagree. Look at their 1st district game at HOME against Buna, which was played in December. Only a 14 point win by Kountze. Earlier this week we blew them out by 40+ at their place. The addition of Harper (Ozen) and Powell finally stepping up has played a factor.
Buna has some players lost to elgibility issues since the first meeting, they aren"t the same clun now as they were in December.Warren beat them last week after losing to them handily earlier in the season.
15. I was just curious if he was hurt last season. The kids I saw throw smoke in high school were throwing high 80's. Just to name a few the Douglas kid from Colmesneil and the McCabe kid from Spurger and both the Beck kids from Woodville. They consistantly hit the upper 80"s and all were legit D1 prospects. The times I saw Colby last season were a couple of times against Warren and once against Hardin. In those ballgames he looked to me like he was having arm trouble.I have no doubt the pitching coaches at Lamar will develope him and I wish him nothing but the best at LU.
16.
Kountze has improved tremendously since the end of December. I'll take them by 15+ at home.
You knew Duane wasn't gonna put up with Lions effort in the early season games didn't ya.The district overall is down so I don't see a challenge for the Lions in district.I still think they are a little small to make a deep playoff run but Joubert will get all they have got to give him.
17. Unless the process has changed part of it entails a trip to Austin to go before the UIL which is an inconvenienceto say the least.I'll stick to my original statement, some of these guys shouldn't have that much stroke.
18. No disrespect intended to Colby but was just wondering if he was hurt last season.I saw him pitch last year 3 times agaist different clubs and he they really hit the ball well against him.Unusual to see someone get a D1 scholarship that doesn't throw smoke.Congrats the Colby on the signing.
19. There is no excuse not to be prepared to shoot free throws in crucial situations. The players should take it upon themselves to shoot 100 free throws at the end of every practice. You do it when everyday and it becomes repetition. You shoot 50% from the line in close games and you'll get beat more often than not.
20. This is a rule that needs changing. I could possibly see this in a district or playoff setting but the officiating in some our local tournaments just isn't good enough to be able to delegate these type penalties.I've watched Duane coach for years and while he sometimes gets upset and gets his point across I've never seen him doing anything that warrants ejection.
21.
What part is Mechanics, Mental, repetition, form? Or all the above? Ever seen anyone with terrible form that was a good shooter?  Pistol Pete said he had a little imaginary friend that went with him everywhere he went. He would watch the little guy shoot and he never missed...lol
All of the above. You can put a kid on the wall shooting spots. If he has the dedication and the work ethic he can make himself a shooter.I watched one go to the gym at 6am for years and do it.There are no short cuts to becoming a pure shooter.
22. My version of the mercy rule is "If you don't want to get beat bad, GET BETTER !!!!! ". Let's just give everyone a trophy Geez !!!
23. Lots of sophomores on the diamond last year for Warren and you know what they say about sophs?? The best thing about em is they become juniors :) Warren will be improved and deeper, they have a legit shot at a title but Buna is the champ until somebody beats em.
