Hardin-Jefferson vs. Navasota Game Thread/Navasota advances
whsalum replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I haven't seen them this year but Navasota is always pretty solid.I watched a few highlights tonight and Sealy looke awful. -
I think you're gonna be disappointed lol EC, Buna, Anahuac, and Hardin, and quite possibly Kountze are all better teams than Warren. Don't wanna be a damper but that's a pretty tough district. But theyll be more successful than in football or basketball definitely lol
Now that's goin out on a limb LOL but they are gonna be better than some folks think. They will have to pitch by committee but they are gonna be solid in the field and hit the ball pretty well.

The new guy may get some more kids in the gym.Dayton has a ton of atheletes but the times I saw them this year they were not playing.
-
This is becoming a lost art in the high school game.I have watched a ton of games this season and I have never seen so many kids with such poor form. You see them standing with their feet sideways, taking their eye off the rim and even putting a loop in the release. This used to be taught for hours in practice but it seems like it's completely overlooked in todays game. This time of year it's the difference between winning and losing. 4 for 17 from the free throw line will get you beat every time. The Rebels seem to have a little problem with stamina late in the games which sometimes leads to other clubs cutting in to the their leads and also affects their free throw shooting.BucketSitR I saw their loss was to Lufkins JV and I know that sometimes Lufkins JV can look a lot like their varsity(especially on some tournament days)Wasn't a knock on them just my thought on why the game would be close.
-
Time will tell...but, looking at overall talent, if this team were anywhere but Warren, people would be scheduling vacation days for the playoffs. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and schedule those vacation days. These kids were VERY competetive last year as Freshman when I watched them against Buna,Kountze and Evadale. They have took a pounding so far on the gridiron and on the hardwood but they are a salty little bunch on the diamond.Good Luck boys and don't make me waste my vacation.

I was picking about the cheap shot Steve, I know you like to give no-look a hard time.I actually had a police officer at the Zavalla tourney one year tell me I couldn't yell so loud for my kids.Thought he was gonna lock me up LOL. -
Evadale has played a very tough schedule so they shouldn't see anything that surpries them. That being said they weren't very successful against those clubs.West Sabine on the other hand played a pretty easy schedule and had a 20 point plus loss to Kountze and a loss to a JV club earlier this year.Game should be very close.

DEEP EAST TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF PREVIEW
whsalum replied to Lazeek's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I think West Sabine picked up some kids that used to play down in Brookeland which would explain the depth. They struggled a little early but have been solid in district, I don't know if that comes from improvement or playing in a weak district .I quess we will find out this weekend.I know they got a basketball guy sitting in the supt. chair. -
That could get interesting, Dayton has always had the horses just needed someone to get em in the gym. This could look a lot like Anahuac West.
Sure wish I could make this game and the whole playoff run for Kountze. :( I've missed it for the past 2 years being away from Texas with my job.
These won't resemble what you're used to watching KHSAlum400.What round does Kountze get to Crockett in?I think they beat Trinity pretty easy but they don't have the size or the go to players they have had in the past. -

We used to blow the whistle coming down the tunnel but I haven't heard a whistle this year.I think they may have changed that practice. -
That's not Gulf Coast chapter...that is some of Bmt. UIL's finest :o :o :o
It's been about 5 years since I was down there and it was the Gulf Coast Chapter back then,Coach West really turned that program around.I have seen times when on a hard foul the law got there before the officials did. -
The least amount of routine or mental approach to the FT will for most athletes be good for them. You have some superior mental athletes that it really dosent matter what they do they are going to make them. Keep the routine simple, I have taught my son to approach it like Steve Nash, he will visulize and go through the approach with out the ball, then when he is givin the ball he takes 3 dribbles, shoots, and holds the follow through until the ball hits the floor. Alot of players will "pull the string" and not hold the release, you have to hold the release at leas until it is in the net. I teach youth players who are trying to get their shots to hold the follow through until the ball bounces off the floor. I call them "one bouncers", grooving your shot, or 2 second hold em. It has seemed to work with the players who will listen. I disagree with whoever was saying that basketball is all about FT's, they are a very important factor, but there are too many aspects to say FT's are the sole determining factor in a game. Are they any more important than a missed defensive assignment and your players scores a layup? It is just that FT are alot easier to stat than a missed defensive assignment.
I have taught my son to approach it like Steve Nash, he will visulize and go through the approach with out the ball, then when he is givin the ball he takes 3 dribbles, shoots, and holds the follow through until the ball hits the floor. Thta's the exact routine I used years ago to get my kids relaxed and shooting it right.Went thru the entire routine before they got the ball, then bounced the ball 3 times ,took a deep breat and shot the ball, broke the wrist and held it to the ball hit the floor.Worked to the tune of 82% over 3 years and 400 plus attempts. The key is practicing the exact routine over and over.

Kid could play! Anyone remember him?
Kid was a beast! I remember when we dropped down to 2A and in our 2nd year we ran into this team, who was unfamiliar to us at the time, Arp. Johnson was definitely a high-flyer and could score. Needless to say, Arp defeated us in 2006 but we got revenge on him in 2007. Kid graduated and went on to play football at Iowa State. Something happened there and he's transferred to Valdosta State.
I remember hm well.He mae Arp a very tough out in the region for several years.

Wasn't refering to you either Blue. You just can't seem to keep you foot out of your mouth. I'm starting to think Evadale will be a heck of a lot better when you have no reason to come to the games! That'll be soon enough.
I have been going to Evadale games for 25 yrs now, and I dont see me stoping going anytime in the furture. I have coach almost every kid playing in JR high all the way up to Sr . Boys and girls. So you aint getting rid of me that eazy. ;D And WHSALUM I said that after we lost to Leggett that we were not the best 1a club in the area. And as far the Techs go, yea its the rule, and its also the rule if you slap the backboard, if you spill water on the floor during a 30 sec time out, if the coach crosses mid court, and on and on. But most of those calls are never made except when a offical wonts to become part of the game. Most of your good refs can make their point without making that call and you never know they are on the floor.JMO
Now don't take this personal Blue because it isn't meant to be but I have seen the pre game dunk called 3 times this year.Evadale was not one of the clubs that I saw it called against. My question is this,if it is a technical foul to dunk in pre game warm ups and the official does not call it how do you decide when one is called in a game situation? The officials are calling a rule violation which they should unless the rule is changed.Do I think it should be tech? No, but they have to call it as long as it is.The same goes for aggresive fouls, they have to call what the rule book dictates,if they don't you may as well have fan calling the game without a rule book. -
The young guy over at Deweyville is a hometown boy who might be a good fit.He did a pretty good job with a young club this year and worked for several years on a very good Hardin staff.Sometimes these young coaches do a really good job when they come back to their alma matta.

I still think to this day if they woudl have made atleast 5 more free throws they would have been playing for a state championship that year. IMO free throws are as easy as you want them to be, I've seen players just staright up panic when they get the free throw line. Then I've seen other players get up there like its nothing and sink the biggest two shots of the season....its all about muscle memory
I agree with everything you say. However, sometimes, a fluke comes along. Ask LeBron how he felt yesterday when he had two shots to tie the game with the Celtics in the last 10 seconds. Sometimes the mental aspect influences the muscle memory.
True, but I also heard the ESPN announcer quote some sick percentages from Lebron when the game is near the end and the score is close..... something like 90-95% during that time. The only problem with the percentages is sometimes those "5-10%" chances actually happen.
This wasnt ANY game- it was the Celtics
Ok.............. Are you allowed to miss a shot against the 76'ers and not the Celtics?
The suggestion is the pressure is greater against the celts than the sixers. YOu may make a 6 foot putt with me and miss it with Tiger in the foursome
Dont think players are scared of Tiger anymore :D
You lose the fear factor when your wife beats the sh$$ out of you with a golf club ;D

LOL .Now Steve that's a cheap shot :) Blue I think we're on the same page now, some folks look thru rose colored glasses when evaluating their kids playing abilities or their potential.Really a shame to see kids leave their schools and friends behind only to find out the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
