This is not about coaching or winning now, now its about a brand name. Pat may be a class guy but the comparison I draw is to nascar, Dale Sr (Bobby) had gone down every road, won everything there is, torch passed to Dale Jr (Pat) who despite coming from the same family just doesnt have it. You want to build LU back up, look at the Butler or VCU model, Stevens is what 34? Smart cant be much if any older. No retreads from power families or assistants who have been around forever, hire the young guns.
Hmmm, this could be an advantage for our future young players in the area. I see Knight moving up to greater things. He knows about some of our local players and he takes them with him in the next 4 years. ;D
Maybe it will be to our advantage and he'll take you too. ;D
HATERS ::) :D -
Pat Knight has as much of a chance to be a great coach in the Southland as anybody. His recruiting will help. All he would have to do is get some McNeese, Sam, Western Kentucy, Tennesse State, La Tech, etc. players to come to BMT. The guy is a decent basketball coach, he just wasnt the best recruiter for the Big 12. I think he will be able to recruit on this level. He often had great 2nd games each season against the better schools in the big twelve which shoes he can read film and make adjustments! He needs to get a young go getter assistant with ties to San Antonio, Houston, & Dallas to go get those kids leaving Texas to go play for othe Lamar-type schools! I see the Pettway kid going to Texas now but we will see!
And I know a lot of the kids in Houston and some in the Dallas area. With my contacts I could really help LU. I could become the greatest recruiter of all time at LU. iF Knight is such a good recruiter, then Pettaway would come to Lamar, right ??? ::) -
who? I thought they were gonna have a decision early this week? Or are they still working out the details of the truck lease from Philpott?
:D I really don't think our new coach will be guided by those type of decisions you are referring towards. 8)
I'm pretty sure there are no Kevin Durants wandering the halls of any area school. Comparing Durant to these high school kids is unfair.
Most players of Durant's ability were all unknown at one time. All the greats end up having a break out season. I'm like you, I don't see it right now myself, but you never know.

how do they deal with kids that do both? On Lifting Weights...... 4 Days a week lifting – off season They test body fat VERY IMPORTANT is the weight program “One of the most important thing is to be stronger than the other guy†I love practice and love to play, if you don’t you are probably not going to get better. To be a better player you must get stronger. We lift year round. We chart the players on the weights. Bench, reps, lungs etc. Many people are keeping the kids accountable. I would make less money and pay the weight coach to have a better weight program. the above is from Don Meyer
Time is limited in high school. " To be a better player, you must be stronger"? That might be true if your skills are adequate. But if you sacrifice skill development time in order to get "stronger" you wont get better. Looks to me like Kevin Durant is a very good player.
Stevie, you have pointed out a major problem :-X's program. Weight lifting nor cross country makes a difference if you don't have the skill set to produce to be a winner. So the question remains, do you want stronger players or more skilled players? In my opinion, give me a skinny kid in high school who knows how to dribble, score and defend versus a strong kid who can't hold his own *weight*. ;)
Great ! Glad you finally agree on qualities of new HF Basketball Coach. (I knew you would come around) Now lets discuss the "4B+" plan. (I have to give credit to Zoneblock for that one) Whats your opinion on that?
I see where you're going with this. Interesting politics. I'm still a dreamer and firmly believe (this year) that talent will overcome the politics you are referring to now. WOW! :-X

I didn't want to believe what I heard. I thought the parents were making up the stuff I heard. My superior knowledge showed me they were correct in their assessment. #7: You can have that one too. I'm vain, I wish this was more about me than other. I can't answer for them.

I could have left off the administrators and left it at parents and board member pressuring for freshmen to be moved up. Challenge away my friend. :D
You got it my friend. You said "......(.edit) insist on their darlings playing varsity over equally or more skilled players." Surely, you are not referring to me? I NEVER insisted my son play varsity. I did say that a certain JV (guard)player should have been moved up to varsity, and he wasn't my son. #2 All the equally or more skilled guards did not play varsity in the beginning. Okay, c'mon , dig yourself deeper into what you think you know 8)
Anyone know about his recruits going to Tech? Could any of them possibly follow him to Lamar? Like the kid from Galveston Ball? Also any other rumors or news about assistant coaches?
NO! Kids dream to play in the Big 12, SEC, Big East, etc. That chance only comes once in a lifetime. -
That may be the case. I just know what I saw. The visiting coaches booth is right next to our broadcast booth, share the same door. I don't think he was that involved. May have just been listening.
Can't wait for the basketball season to start to give you a hard time during your broadcasts, especially @ Silsbee and winning.
Having been at Tech while Knight was there, as both an assistant and for a brieft time as head coach, I was ready for him to be gone. At the same time, I really think that he can be successful here. He is a class act who is just getting his feet wet as a head coach. He has made plenty of mistakes while at Tech, and he can learn from those experiences. All indications are that he has a good recruiting class coming to Tech next year. Having been in Texas for the last ten years - recruiting Texas high schools will definitely help him hit the ground running. I do believe that the days of JUCO dominated Lamar teams may be over. He does have some head coaching experience at other levels (USBL and IBA) and has worked as an assistant at several different schools. He worked as a scout in the NBA and assitant coach in the CBA. Finally, he has one of the greatest college coaches to ever live on his speed dial - who also happens to be an analyst on the four letter network. I am pulling for him, because I genuinely like him and believe that he loves his players and and will have their backs.
But, can he WIN at this level ??? -

actually there are no football duties tied to the job at least there weren't this year
Maybe not, but I do know that Coach Richards was in the coaches booth up in the pressbox at Tiger Stadium for the game between HF and Silsbee. He had a headset on. ;)
I thought he was only filming the game. But hey, YOU would know better than me ;)

Okay, this makes more sense. Maybe our recruiting class will get better with the Knight name behind it. It could work. But now I just had flashes of Billy Tubbs' comeback. But I'm going to remain positive and go with the flow. It might be a good move. -
