Bluedove... Lets say the new coach came in and was able to persuade the AD to allow him to work the kids out in a different way. That different way is this... Basketball players who do not play football will be strongly encouraged to run cross country. They will use the after school cross country workouts to lift on Monday/Wednesday/Friday and do plyos and conditioning on Tuesday/Thursday. The players will be required to run in some of the cross country meets in order not to go agains UIL rules. This would allow the full athletic period to be used for basketball skill and fundamental development. As a parent, do you think this would be supported by the basketball players and parents of the players?
Running cross-country? Westbury Christian School is looking better and better. ::)
I wonder if football lifted on game days? And I believe the majority on here believe that lifting weights is a good thing, but basketball players need to be in the gym more than lifting weights. Basketball is a game that combines skills and strength (upper and lower). If you have to sacrifice one it has to be weights, basketball skills or fundamentals are too critical to leave out. I dont know how the athletic periods are for HF as far as time length. But lets say it is 50 minutes. 5 minutes to get dressed, 20 minutes to lift, 5 minutes to get to the gym from weightroom at fieldhouse, 15 minutes of skill work and 5 minutes to get dressed and to class before bell unless it is last period and then you have bus riders who have to leave even earlier. 15 minutes of skill work is a joke. I have worked with 50 minute straight periods of skill workouts and you are busting it to get the things in you need to get done.
50 MINUTES? Thats really pushing it :D
Sounds to me like he will need alot of patience and a thick skin if this board is even close to what real life at HF is to be like during bball season.
Sounds to me that the few who are making statements are only saying the extra amount of time spent on weights during the season should be used more in the gym.
If Hamshire Fannett doesn't get competitive with its coaching stipiends then it will have a hard time convincing any "good" coach to take this job. This is a job that could be taken from "good" to "great" in a short amount of time. They need a coach with some vision and some enthusiasm. Just not sure just how committed the powers to be about making this happen.
The window of opportunity is there.

Aggie, is Hamshire Fannett playing the same schedule again next season?

BUT! They also go to the gym 3 times a day and work on their skills. Now schools like HF are far from being an Oak Hill but if they lift on game days then thats a problem. Because that time needs to be in the gym. Most "experts" suggest twice a week weight lifting to maintain. Meaning no added extra weight during the season. You're not trying to produce weightlifters but maintain strength to minimize serious injuries. Actually I'm for the weights but only in moderation during the season.
I to,have no prob. with lifting weights. As long as the weight or to help basketball players, and not trying to make football players. As in pulling truck tires on the football field. Your not trying to make running backs, and do you have any ideal the tork on the lower back of a 6'+ player??? As long as the basketball coach is in charge of the weight lifting I have no prob. but I do have a prob. with a football coach(AD) trying to make football players out of basketball kids>>>> ;)
;)
I think that there is a definate prefence to hire a minority. Even without the preference, I am about as opposed to Knight as I am Abatemarco, maybe equally opposed.
It just so happen that the one who fits LU's needs happen to be of color. ;) -
Abatemarco absolutely positively NO!!!! Let someone else take that risk, his track record doesn't justify the chance. LU needs desperately to get this hire right!!!!
They better or the Montagne Center will become indoor practice field for football ;) -
:D I couldn't agree with you more, Cuz. Maybe the new coach will feel the same way and at least take a look at his players and show interest during the summer. ;)

He couldn't adjust his coaching to match his players.
Your coaching style has to reflect the players on your roster. Best example is Lumberton in the early to mid 2000's.. They ran a spread offense for football and they were all white with no one running under a 4.8 with a QB that wasn't successful throwing the ball. Hence, a spread offense doesn't fit that team which is why Lumberton never won. Lamar needs a coach that can translate an offense to the style of players he has. Cross.
Evans >:( :) -

The talent pool ain't that great out there once you start looking at the 100-200 players in the lower rankings.
Roc was a coach who could recognized and recruit. Lamar needs a tactician. A tactician wins the SLC, a recruiter wins the big east.
Wrong!he could not put into play what he had recruited and instill a belief system in his players. -
