i mean im a Hj fan and i dont think they will make it to state. But i do think they will make it to the regional finals and have a matchup with silsbee. but im hoping i am wrong and beat them this year to go to state
One of the few reasonable people I've heard from in HJ land. -
why everyone mad? because i express my opinion... who is mr. e?
Because 'you" PLAYED basketball and you know the all about the 1-a game ;)
STALLWORTH averaged 12.4 ppg last year and 7.8 rebounds.... thats role player type stuff... but im sure there were other big stars for them last year.. i hope he improved for u to be saying that hes the best in setx
When you have a team of talented athletes, you don't need to avg.20 plus points to win. A good point will still get his points from defensive steals, free throws, open looks, moving without ball, etc. Plus, one of the most important factors premier point guards don't get enough credit for is this: They make their teammates including the weaker ones look good.
True, you can hone in on some skills but the part that makes a PG really good, I think it is something you are born with. I May be wrong. One of my favorite authors believes that it isnt innate, but that you can build a PG through situational drills doing them over and over. I agree with him to a point, you can make a PG better, but there is something about the great ones you cant really describe you only notice it when you see it. JMO
Very good points.
Bluedove, we discussed this on another message board the other day about how to build a PG. I know you have a son who can play PG. I am not sure you can build one, I think the best PG just have it in them. And it all depends on what expectations you have for this guard. But a point guard to me sees the play before it happens, as he pushes the ball up court he can see the game happen at multiple angles, can get his shot or a shot for another and play good onball and offball defense. That is a great PG. There are not many out there that can do that. A true PG will normally be more worried about how many assists he had compared to points. But at the same time he can score if needed. And he has to be vocal. I remember growing up and crying after losing a youth game. The other kids would make fun of me. My dad told me when I got older that he knew it hurt me but that he kind of liked it because it did hurt me that much to lose and if it hurt me that bad I would ultimatly do something about it. A good PG will hate to lose. It will consume him.
Not sure if you can build one either. The really good ones I've seen were born with it. Just a a part of their their personality. Now, the vocal part is what you have to work on for some.
First, no one said anything negative about Burkeville. Second, Spurger beat Burkeville, so there is not a whole lot you can say(or I guess you can keep talking). The game is over. Spurger won. Give Spurger credit. Unrelated but I was going for CH against Woodville last Friday and Woodville won. I congradulated Woodville, they got the win. Sure you can say things but until they play again and if a different result happens then there is not much to talk about. I dont know the Erwin kid, he may be a good player, but just because he gets 15 open looks does not make him a good player. The thread topic is the best PG in SETexas, I heard from dad before he got sick that the kid from Spurger could play. My dad said he shot the ball ok, but he saw the court exceptionally well. To me that is the biggest attribute of a PG, when they can see a play happen before it develops. Some have it and some dont, evidentally my dad saw this in the Spurger kid. Just an opinion, you have stated your opinion multiple times. I think everyone knows who your hero is.
Ah, a man who knows about pg's. PG's can see the play happening before it develops.

I saw HJ on the sports segment for a local tv station last night. I saw the players doing layups and shooting. I thought the tv station had pushed the wrong button and ran the segment in slo-motion.
I guess the question then becomes, who will be in Austin first: HJ or the Longhorns
Your window of opportunity is closing in fast. There is the possibility that HF will have THREE of the quickest guards in the region, very soon. Oops! :-X :-X -

Should be a stipulation that you should not pick your relatives
BlueDove, I just read a good many articles on lifting weights on game days. It is becoming more and more common. From what I read, lifting weights is done after the game is over. That may be what they do at Oak Cliff. I dont know because I dont know how they run their program, but I just got through scanning and reading 4-5 different articles and they were all talking about lifting after the game if you were going to do it on game day, not before the game. They suggested to lift at only 40-50 percent of regular weight training and also encouraged that the workouts use more than one joint of movement (if that makes sense) when exercising.
Yep, I had to change with the times. But I do have problems if they are doing standing knee squats

If Hamshire Fannett wins a single playoff game

I know that when Price was at BH, it was just the underlevels that liftedon gameday.
Totally ridiculous that you should have to ask that question about ANY basketball team member.
:D I think Nash has something to do with HF's program -
I always see people trying to refute claims using Pro basketball players. You cant compare Pro basketball players with HS basketball players. Their bodies are completely different. Not even on the same skill. I have also saw posts where people compare strategy and other things from a Professional player to a HS player. That is like apples to oranges. There are too many intangibles between the two. Lifting can not be good on game day for the average HS athlete. I dont know for sure, but I would bet football coaches dont let their players lift on game days. It is kind of like going out and running 3 miles before you play a game. Until I hear from some reputable sources, I will not encourage lifting on game days. I say 2 days a week during the season or the Maintenance phase of the overall weight training program.
Steve Nash . Blame it on him

Maybe a better goal would be just to win a dist. game. To get in the playoff they will have to win 6 dist games, They have a chance against BC and OF but WOS is playing good ball right now.
They beat yall so think are looking better @ H.F. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Yea they beat a 1a team But that 1a team is going to win their dist. and go to the playoffs. HF is going to be lucky to win 2 dist games Big Difference. And just how many 3 or 4 a teams did your team play this year ;D
Wait a minute TB, you were the one bragging BEFORE the Evadale/HF game that Evadale was a sure winner ;) -
The best two PG's in SETX don't play their natural positions in High School. This is the handicap given to alot of kids from smaller schools and non-prep or private schools. When you are the best player on your team and you are a guard, you are automatically put into the 2-guard role in high schools with little talent. These kids are both 6'2" and would play their natural positions at larger schools and both would be much higher recruited if they did. I have watched them both run the offenses, score, make the right pass, and play really good defense. One of the kids could play on the level poor man's John Wall with his athleticism if the coaching was there to push him to his potential. Both are more naturally PG by heith and ability but are forced to play off the ball because they score so well. Both have to force their game because of the lack of coaching to put them in a place to be most successful. The kids I am speaking of? Smith (poor man's Wall) of Central and Green of Ozen!
Sometimes it just don't pay to be 6'2" in high school
Lifting on game day could possibally help your shot. Especially if your a bad shooter. A normal miss could be altered to a score..... ;D
Too much sauce? Well it is Sunday and maybe you're off today ;) -
Not a lot of pure point guards in the area. There are lots of 'creative players' especially from Silsbee, but I would not consider them a BJ Tyler type PG. However, the most impressive forward/post I've seen is the kid from Silsbee...WOW!! The tall lankey kid from Nederland should be considered too. Points guards r not that impressive this year, that's prob why the only team from SETX that has a chance to make it to Austin is the team from Silsbee. Big men win district championships....guards win state championships.
Thank you! For me to pick a best point guard, he's got to have the skills of a point guard. A triple threat type of player who has all or most of the tools. But give me a true pg and a big man to win championships.

I'm just saying that other players contributed like Torry Henry Matt Falgout Will Taylor Matt Pace Johnathan Brown everyone makes it seem like J'covan stepped on the court and won a state championship by him self witch isn't true many other players were involved to and they should get credit to. Go onto the tapps web site and look at the all state picks from kelly in those years there were many other good players on the team yet j' covan was the best so he gets all the glory
yep, I saw it!
