But the gap is closing in on HJ. By 2011-2012 season, the district will see some new changes. Enjoy your last season for awhile.
Dove, at least for the next two seasons I don't see HF moving into HJ's territory. As long as we keep our core group in tact, we should be able to battle for district championships with Silsbee with HF on the outside looking in.
HF and WOS will be opening up the door ;) Time marches fast in sports.

My apologies. I was ignorant enought to assume that Barkley was the one with the depth of basketball knowledge. Since you are on a "predictive roll" right now, could you tell me who will be the NCAA Champion next year as well as the NBA? I also am a Lamar Basetkball fan and cannot decided on whether or not to renew my season tickets. You can solve that dilemma by telling me what there record will be.
I don't keep up with NCAA nor NBA (boring) anymore. I only make my predictions on the talent I see and the system. I didn't attend one game @ LU this year. Why? I saw their talent pool. Season tickets? Hmmm? Personally, I'd prefer game by game tickets.

Hopefully we can get a former star from HJ to run the program @ HF. She's at BISD right now.

You will begin to see a slight downward spiral for the HJ Hawkettes. Time For Change!

How many of the state champions would beat UConn women?
BLUEDOVE3 replied to bobcatfan's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I think I am a pretty good judge of basketball talent and I say maybe Yates beats them. I haven't seen any of the boys teams play that WON state but I have seen a few of the ones that could have (Kountze, HJ, Silsbee, Bullard,Chapel Hill)...and I have seen the UConn women...IMO, no way the guys win. The argument that there is no comparison between athleticism between boys and girls may be true to an extent but, we have all seen much more athletic boys teams lose to other teams because they didn't match up skill wise. The guys may be bigger, faster, and stronger but those women can shoot, run the floor, and defend. Geno doesn't recruit egos either and this team has great chemistry! OConn takes at least 3 out of the 5.
You need to turn in your "CoachK" fan club badge ::) ::) -

It is harmful to basketball because that 50-60 minutes a day is not working on skills that you must now rely on a 14-18 year old kid to do on his own. Even if you open the gym, the coach can not go in there and put him through drills and make him work on individual skills or even team skills that could be done during the period. A player is more likely to go into a weightroom on his own and go through a weight workout than go do dribbling, ball handling, or shooting drills in the gym on his own. So to answer the poll question again. Universal offseason IS harmful to basketball by taking that time OUT of the coaches hands to work on things he thinks they need to work on.
You also can't get 10 kids practicing together "on their own". That is the reason it is so valuable. It is another hour of practice. I remember that we used our athletic period in high school during the season to put in bounds plays in, shoot free throws, or work on some other skill. Then at practice you could input those things in to real game situations or whatever you had for that day.
So true! -

Not if you have a dedicated basketball coach who has laid out a schedule for morning weight training and the afternoon is time for working on your game. -

Would like your input on this please.
Stevie, it takes a truly gifted athlete about 2 weeks to get back into basketball shape. let's see: Basketball season counting the school season is from approx: November to July/early Aug. I would stay with basketball conditioning. The problem is that football as a secondary sport starts in Aug/Sept. There really is no time for a rest period for the kids who want to play football.
It is interesting that you are able to quantify things for "truly gifted athletes" Now, what about those who are not so "truly gifted"?
Simple, the not so gifted are at home most of the day playing X-Box or WI-FI thingy. -

Jim Hicks/RCS: Roc Out Recruiting
BLUEDOVE3 replied to TexasTerror's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Coach Roc was out watching players at the John Lucas Southwest Invitational Camp. I believe it was the first day of the live period for recruiting players.
THEY were also at the Houston Hoops Summer Showcase @ Legends in the Woodlands. It was a good site to get your players under the radar. Many other schools were represented as well. -
Coaches could have brought their teams to Houston this week for a live event in front of major D-1 coaches for exposure.Memphis, Iowa, Baylor, Lamar, etc were watching the kids.

I am gonna give an example that I have given several times. Kenyon Spears- 3 time all state. Averaged 28 points and 13 rebounds and just under 10 asst his senior year. Almost a triple double which is unheard of. 6'3 and perfect build and combination of athleticism and basketball savy to be a college basketball player. Had full scholarships to three southland schools but held out for offers from bigger schools. Never got those offers so he Ended up walking on at Lamar and having a nice career there. He is one of the all time leaders in 3 point shooting and maybe one other statistical category. My point is this is arguably the best player to ever where an HJ uniform and one of the top 10 3A players to EVER come from this area and look what he did. People just need to realize besides a few exceptions the great 3A players here are a dime a dozen in Houston.
Wow! You came straight to the point, didn't you? The truth can be oh so raw at times. This is why you have to play against as much competition as you can, to gauge your true talents and weaknesses. This is my common belief in any sports one may participate in at any age. Ask "Team Sneed " 8th graders what happened when they ran into some 7th graders a few weeks ago. You can hide within your 2-a, 3-a, 4-a, & even 5-a systems and be "da man." But eventually, players will have to come out from under their systems, be exposed and try and find an Unsigned Senior event to attend.
Tigersvoice is correct dove. You are right most of them time however your attempts to constantly downgrade what kids do gets old. You clearly understand basketball but what these kids accomplish is great no matter what. It may be on a different level but it still is worth celebrating and congratulating on here as we have lots of pride in our schools. We understand that the kids are not going to big time d1 programs but with that said what they do is still a big deal to us and also teaches the kids life lessons.
Wait a minute! I only talk down to Hardin-Jefferson and thats because they have a successful program, and I'm jealous! Didn't mean to downgrade at all. Reality check! By high school, everyone should be caught up or sitting on the bench. This area has way too many unsigned seniors. Why? Lack of preparation? Lack of competition to get better? I truly believe if you have a decent skill level, you will get a scholarship. But we (parents and players) need to really be honest and secure enough to evaluate the skill level of these kids who want to go to the next level. I used Team Sneed 14u as an example because they recently played a team and I saw the game. Team Sneed is a good team but their flaws were also highlighted. Thats how you get better by recognizing your flaws (not always easy to do) and working on them. It's reality and I can't sugar coat it.

Wish we could dive into the prep school thing but Stoneridge Prep never worked out for us.
Prep schools would be a viable option. You have kids who are usually older than your average /typical freshman class. It's like playing one year of junior college but a player still has 4 years of eligibility left, instead of one or two years with JUCO players. Kid is use to be away from home. -

There were about 3 kids in my equation to help with the title, who have moved away to attend other schools :'( no comment at this time. But HF will have better athletes for the coming seasons. -

Wise took the heat/criticism that splattered ALL OVER the kids, they played with total class, enthusiasm and heart. Cannot ask for more. One of the signature teams of all-time in Texas. Why oh why can't people just congratulate them without a parting shot at the coach?
because some of him don't respect him, or his way of doing things.
