Bob West: Steve Roccaforte on shaky ground as LU head coach
Recruiting is a crap shoot. Most of us as fans have seen some coaches recruit very well and then run into a drought. It's easy to bring the best guys in at the big time programs, but down here at this level you are tested. I can tell you that the guys from this last class are excellent athletes. If you watch Milk Harris practice, you'd understand what I mean by "great athlete". The refinement is needed, but if it happens next season will be a vast improvement.
"Practice?" God, I hope your not a coach @ LU. I've known practice 'stars" all my life. Do everything in practice and look like superstars. As soon as the bright lights are turned on..................you figure it out! The guy has been there long enough to have a quality class year in and out. -
A lot of affluent whites live in 3rd ward. Don't forget about S. mcGergor with those big 2-story homes and swimming pools. I hope this guy doesn't delete my comments again
The point is to build a program. Coach Roc had a very successful season two seasons that ended on a crushing note in the tournament. The last two seasons have been injury plagued, and it would have been difficult for anybody to win. This is, at best, a mid-level program. It takes more than three or four seasons to build a consistent program on this level. If Roc is sent packing, how many seasons do you give his replacement? If he has a similar record after three or four seasons under similar circumstances, should he be canned? Does the school just continue a revolving door every four years if just minimal success is achieved? My point: you can't build a program with that kind of mentality.
I have no problem with Roc coaching. It's the team on the floor I have a problem with and it's the coaching staff's responsibility to put out a good product (i.e. recruiting talent). Here lies the problem. We all know the best talent will go to big D1 schools. But is Lamar getting the best players with mid-level talent? I don't think so! These players are signing with other mid-level colleges. -

Gettin beat that bad would be terrible but it is also very probable if your playin yates. No player ever died from gettin beat like that. If you dont agree with what coach wise does, i am sure he doesn't care. if you want yates respect, then quit pissin and moanin behind screen names, go be a coach and go get you some. If you cant do that, then keep on typing cause it is probably the closest thing to basketball that you have been involved in.
Like Coach Wise, I don't care that don't agree with me that Wise is a piece. And I don't care to have Yates respect. Earning the respect of Wise and the rest of the 3rd ward ghetto is the last thing on my mind. There have been lots of good teams in the state of Texas, and they won lots of games. Yates isn't the only hs team in this state to go undefeated and be national champs. The difference between Yates and Willowridge, or Dallas Lincoln, is that they did it with class. If you don't think Willowridge with TJ Ford and Daniel Ewing couldn't have beat the breaks off of people if they wanted than your just plain foolish. Instead they won with class and earned respect from everyone, not just the 3rd world/ward crowd that looks to beat down on outmanned hs kids to make up for their lack of service and civilty in the real world. And what's wrong with our society and our kids is that they live by the law of the jungle, instead by the law of the land. It has nothing to do with winning games or going undefeated, but its by how they do it.
Wise could care less what you think.
Why can't a coach make consequences for going on spring break? I realize the ultimate decision belongs to the parents, but if there are consequences for the athlete the parent either has to be willing to accept those and pay the price or make other arrangements for vacation.
Gotta agree with you on this one.
Bluedove - please clarify - are you saying some choose not to play because they can't discuss these things with coaches because of UIL? Not agreeing or disagreeing, just asking for clarification.
I was just wondering because I know how HF parents can become invloved with coaches.

There is no dedication. During the off-season, compare how many kids are shooting hoops to those on the diamond or volleyball court. That's why the volleyball team almost went to state last year and the baseball team having success recently, they have kids dedicated to their sport. The v-ball team has a few kids playing college while the baseball team has two current D-1 players. Just my two cents, though.
Good points.
. With the imminence of the hf state championship and the end of HJ dominance, why would there be a need to improve a program poised to be at the top?
We have to plan early and get the present day high schoolers to buy into winning too -

Bob West: Steve Roccaforte on shaky ground as LU head coach

Roc could bail out, take his money and become someone's assistant coach. It's the most logical and safe thing thing to do. And if he leaves, will that show his lack of confidence in his recruiting and coaching abilities in the SLC? -
Blue, I would venture to say 6'3" - 6'4" for some. You have a few teams on occasion who have 6'6" and 6"7". The tallest players Kountze have had in recent memory are Clayton Busby (6"5") and Ashton Hall (6'5"). Both were All-State.
Got it! Was just curious about the big guys.
