Many noticing a decline in basketball talent
Basketball is a team sport. IMO the overall parity being seen today is a result of the rise of soccer and to a lesser extent year round sports (ie. baseball, softball and volleyball). It is harder for the stars to shine when there are no support players below them. Soccer is taking away some to the prime athletes that used to play soccer. Baseball, Volleyball and Softball year round has allowed kids to specialize.
The environment created by the parents has definitely helped to make sports very competitive. You can tell which kids took off during the off season and the kids who worked to get better. This creates a big disparity. Specialization has always been around but kids chose to pick a sport to concentrate on and not the parents back in the day. -

And this includes the HOuston area. You might find one or two players on a team with decent skills and I've seen a lot of middle school talent. I don't think most kids have a love for the game. They know nothing of the history.
Blue, that always not the case in all school.Look @ Big sandy how down they are this year,but the jr.high boys have not lost a game in 2 year.Next year will be all 10 and 9 grader,then the next they will be back. ;D ;D ;D
cmon Catman, Hf is a good example. We win in middle school and get to high school and lose. But the overall talent in middle school still isn't that good. Most kids hitting high school will find the reality of having new positions {bench or band}
Hey, this is da Dove, I didn't realize I was on my wife's account...... -
It was refreshing to see a real high school basketball team play ball.
Yea, was bummed with the quality of coaching this year at LM. We weren't ready to make a run at a title or anything but with the talent that was on the field it was sad that we failed to make the playoffs again! Furthermore, that HC absolutely refused to make adjustments when need be! It's sad when old ladies in the crowd can point out the obvious that's taking place on the field! Anyway, my nephew #10 Jordan Dotson plays starting point guard/shooting guard on LM B-Ball team.
LaMarque looking good in BB this year.
I think a lot of things have hurt the game. Fundamentals are not taught enough for one. The NBA is another, the way the game is played now days you can throw defense out the window. Kids don't play defense anymore. I mean why when you can grab, shove and get mugged. It is all about offense. How many kids shoot a left handed layup with their left hand if they are right handed? Not many. Too much TV and video games. You don't see kids playing outside anymore. My goal was nailed to a pine tree with a big root at the bottom. My court was dirt. But you know what you do what you have to do and you play where you have to play in order to get better.
As far as the NBA, you have to realize there is a lot of "space" created on the floor. Meaning everybody is up on their man. This makes it easier for very athletic players to score and create off the dribble. They're playing defense but these guys are good! Watch a game in the 1970's and mid 80's and the players look like they are moving in slow motion. The guys btoday are still using pick and rolls and back door. The game is just so much faster now. -

Well, when you mix in kids playing videos and eating all day, then come to a practice and begin shooting 3's before warm-ups, and practice for maybe 2 hours it't not quality time used. And I use the word "practice" loosely. -

I agree with SFA85... When PNG and Nederland are atop the district in basketball the district is down! But one thing to remember about PNG and Nederland that you are seeing now is the results of the Little Dribblers programs that were started when these kids were younger. This has made these two schools better, but never will they be great.
Yes, the little dribblers program will make a difference. Also with the girls. Give it time. The key is if these young kids are being taught fundamentals. I see a lot of coaches promoting their own kid or winning instead of teaching the pure game of basketball. Fundamentals is the key. I can only speak from my experience of the Orangefield little dribblers. I am not saying winning should not be a focus all I am saying is, not at the expense of the other kids on the team. Take your best player and make the other players better. The league should be about teaching and that kid coming back to play another year. Allstars is about winning.
I never heard of Little Dribblers until moving into the area. At first, I thought it was a program for little primary kids to play basketball. The competition isn't that great but it's really fun when the kids go to regionals and nationals. I think the coaches do a good job to volunteer their time. I think what we need to realize is that most kids already have the skill set BEFORE they play in these organizations. You should not expect a ccoach at any level to teach a kid how to dribble, pass and shoot. Thats learned during the off season on the playgrounds playing 2 0n 2 or 3 on 3. I always tell players you have to respect the game and be a student of the game if you want to be good at it. -
