Now there are also some exceptions to the rule. Example HJ has played LCM, Nederland, Lumberton, etc in the past and have beaten them. Size of school does have a bearing but not each time!!! Dove I am just trying to come up with anything I can to make MYSELF feel better about losing to Central the other day!!!!
Just remember, Zeek, that the 2013-2015 HF teams will compete against and beat all area 4-a playoff teams.
I was just told the 2014 & 2015 play HJ next week. The road to Austin is moving along nicely :D
Two things that are expected - Lamar to have the #1 recruiting class in hoops, NWST in football. ;D I'm excited about Bob Marlin's class at SHSU. It seems to be his best one in a few years and with the Kats losing Mitchell, Almond and Brown - very crucial we continue to hold our place in the top three of the league by putting in strong players that can fill the hole.
I also heard thru the grapevine that Sam Houston did good in their recruiting this year and from a much more reliable source than ESPN

He is older than me!!! Yes he is at a disadvantage that most good players went to Ozen, but with the "legend" gone he should be able to keep and actually get some of those players to go to Central now. So you think that in 20 years that you will be able to compare Sutherland and Rice's resume??? If so you are crazy!!!! And there is a huge difference in a 4a playoff and a 3a playoff team. You think that Ozen and OF were close last season??? There is a difference. I hope that Central has a great season and makes a deep run in the playoffs as well. See it is easy for me to congratulate and wish a team well that beat my team..........it is very hard for some on this board to do that!!!! ;) ;) ;)
So what is the HUGE difference between 4A and 3A playoff teams?
If you want to start with the obvious it would be enrollment. HJ has 650 while Central has 1450. Now I'm not saying this always matters. Good basketball tradition programs will allow some smaller schools to continue to produce a product that can and will beat teams that have twice the enrollment as them (ie Kountze 400 to Silsbee 880). It's not that uncommon. What a good question would be is how are these teams able to compete at all against these schools with twice the enrollment. I personally believe it's tradition and coaching. By the way, I would love to see Sutherland get his hands on a larger enrollment school and see just what he could do with it. I personally would not want to be playing against him, much less with the numbers stacked against me as well. This wouldn't be good!!
Okay, I was really trying to set up LAZEEK and get him to answer :D
The hard work, of which you speak, needs to be in the sport where excellence is pursued, as opposed to a "good for everybody" regimen
i take it from your post(s) that HF must be have some sort of offseason routine that concentrates on more or less generic weight training/conditioning? i didn't catch the sarcasm earlier, but you've referenced it several more times more or less sarcastically...
Kind of like football is a year round season in HF. You have 7 & 8 grade basketball players during their season weight lifting for football. These two sports deserve their own separate conditioning program. -

HJ played in the big leagues last night. :D

Hmm? I thought coaches usually start building their teams the first 3 years and by year four and five, those same youth begin to show their experience on the court? Again, maybe it's the conditioning of players that could be a problem. I personally know that Oklahoma has a good conditioning program. Their players were up about 5:00 runiing and in the weight room prior to the start of Fall classes.
Is the Liberty coach still there from last year? He was young and energetic kids responded to him.
Yep, he's a young guy and I like his demeanor on the court. They do listen to him and thats good.

I expected Liberty Varsity to be better than I witnessed. I thought there was a strong program there.

And I think this team will be better by conference. Did we really think we could go on the road against 4 D1 teams with a starting line-up of two sophs, a new JC transfer, and a forward and center that didn't play at all last year and win? Guys, its still November. The shooting is disappointing, but we know we have great athletes in Miles and Harper...if they could shoot from behind the arc, they wouldn't be here (they were a combined 8 for 25 last night)...I guess Roc thinks you can teach shooting but athleticism is what it is. Maybe Minor and Mathis will be the answer as shooters...and IF we get Hall back that will only help. I'm still onboard and believe in what Roc is doing...many have posted here over recent years that we needed to recruit out of high school and take our lumps and be patient...well?????
As I said before the season started, it would have been better to try and play with the big boys early and lose than play with the small schools and win. Now, you have no excuse. And as far as Miles, he's an average player but he hasn't shown the skills to take a team anywhere. He's not quick enough for the point and too small on the wing with lack of athleticism. All I gotta say is I hope he has some kids graduating this season..... ;)
Miles is about as quick as it gets... He is not the best ball handler but his speed is ridiculous.
If he can't use his speed with the ball, then he isn't as effective with the ball in his hands. Thanks for making my point. Now, on defense I can see his where his quickness is beneficial to the team.
