There was a kid who was looking at Lamar out of Houston. Blake Jolivete made a verbal to American University this week after considering West Point, Furman, Yale & Lamar. I'm curious, but does anyone have a clue what type of players LU are trying to recruit?

I think the coaches have their work cut out for them this year. In a true sense, coaches are teachers and must have the ability to understand their players and use the mental skills to make their players believe in their system and themselves. It starts from the top.

Who Will The Best Player In The Area This Season?
BLUEDOVE3 replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I saw a few of the Nederland players this past summer in an AAU tourney in Houston. They looked like frightened deer in car headlights after watching their opponents in bracket play. This was a good sign because I commend the players and coaches for taking steps to reach the next level. If Nederland wants to compete, they are going to have to work hard on their footwork/drills during the offseason. I am not a big proponent of (very) competitive summer league ball (u need to rest), but thats the nature of the beast now. These players gotta find the tough competition to raise their own level of play for district. Hammond may be good, but with hardwork and playing against the right compeition, maybe he would be mentioned in the local polls. -
Ready to do what Claim the second position or take your (rightful)position at the top?

Whose the current quarterback at UNT and how is he doing?

Lamar - You Are on the Clock for Bowling!

You've made your point already and it's getting old. I guess you think Lamar should say "Hey, our athletics suck. Don't bother supporting Lamar or coming to the games." Maybe Coach Roc should say on media day: "I tried to recruit better players but all I got was these guys. Between you and me they suck, but hey, it should be a great season!". There's nothing wrong with Lamar promoting it's teams and players. If they don't perform it's there for everyone to see. If they keep losing the coach gets fired and the fans stay away. If you think Lamar keeps hyping it's players too much then go root for somebody else and stop bringing that crap up here. He has a mentally so many in this area has in that everything good needs to come from some other place. So they oppose any all self improvements to LU or SETX. I love improvements at LU but I have to call it like it is and not sugar coat LU sports. ExampleRoc gets credit for doing some things this year that should help his recruiting. You can't really sell the SLC to a major D-1 recruit. But you can sell your program to a good lower level player kid whose eyes would light up seeing a Memphis State or Kentucky on the schedule. Roc knows he doesn't have a prayer but it's good recruiting for the future. Gonzaga coach don't think like you.... There is no comparison! -
I get carried away sometimes because I still live in UH's glory days before all the sanctions hurt the program. You're right! But' we're coming back.

Easy to agree when I make some sense of what I say, isn't it? Best part of C-USA is that you guys would get to make short trips to Rice and Houston. Lots of Cards fans in that area too. With increased travel costs of going to such a conference, you'd probably still maintain a few of your SLC rivalries, which are short trips away as well (Lake Charles and Huntsville). I still see Lamar third or fourth in the pecking order of schools that have a high desirability from the SLC. UTSA and TxSt are #1 and #2. After that, not really sure -- Lamar needs to get on the field and make those upgrades as far as football goes... LU isn't ready to play with the big boys yet. Which is another reason why you guys returned to the SLC, to save money and try and go back to your glory days. Like a baby, there has to be steps taken before yo can play with the big dogs. As far as basketball, there is no way LU could compete in the CUSA. But it would fill up the Montagne when schools like Memphis, Rice, and UH show up to play

Yes!!!!!!!!! Da Rim is right on time with his (?) comments. Excellent points! I'd love to see LU in WAC. But LU would become a whipping board for WAC. Remember the Sun Belt?

I hope NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT... Womens swimming would be better. The facilities already exist and Lamar could be travel partners with UH and swimming member of CUSA. I don't think UH should associate themselves with the competition at Lamar. Let LU compete aginst other Lone Star Conference teams. -

I could see competition bowling working at Lamar. Get a coach and recruit some decent players, pad their resumes and make them into "studs." -

Let me clear my throat! Utah let the kid go because he was not good enough to play at that level. The #300 ranking from Hoops Scoop was fair. They gave his scholarship to a walk-on player................ Also, there was a kid (pg?sg?) from the Clear Lake area that LU supposely was going to sign. LU hyped this kid up a few months ago. This kid was no good too. My point is this: I'm not saying these kids can't ball, but LU is very good hyping these kids up and most of it is just hype. Okay, this is my last reply on this topic. I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall here. I've spent spent about 1 hr googling information about Curtis Eatmon. I have never seen information where Utah "let this kid go". Please provide a link or something to make your claim valid. I believe he wasn't happy at Utah and decided to leave. Here is a little teaser from the Salt Lake Tribune...sheez! This is no fun, you're giving up too soon Rim. Utes Basketball: by Michael C. Lewis Monday, January 07, 2008 Utes Release Eatmon From His Scholarship We knew it was coming, and finally it happened. The Utes have released point guard Curtis Eatmon from his scholarship. Coach Jim Boylen announced the move at his weekly press conference today, and insisted that it did not come because Eatmon has been injured all year, but because the coaches don't believe he's good enough to contribute. "I didn't feel it was fair to keep him, for another two years, on my roster, when his opportunity would not be there in my mind," Boylen said. "I think that's fair." The Utes had long planned for Eatmon not to return next season, after the sophomore had not impressed them during their summertime exhibition tour in Australia. The plan became more clear when Eatmon was allowed to leave the team after fall semester classes concluded last month, in advance of the Dec. 20 surgery in Colorado (rather than Utah) that aimed to repair his troublesome hips. -
bluedove, could we just doze the fb stadium and make room for more bb parking.....lol I thought their field was used for practice only until I heard games scheduled there this season. Still, I agree that the stadium could be used for additional parking whenever we get the bb season extended.

Are you talking about Ryan Donahoe from HJ, who led his team to a state title? Or kids like him in similar situations. -
And there lies the truth to this whole post, I'm jealous because we can't beat you guys yet. I admit it. I'm jealous. Can you imagine living in a world with no bragg'n rights? It's tough man.

Tubbs and Foster were blessed in a time when grades didn't matter as much, and less competition from video games. Plus, every kid with a serious game wants to play on the big stage. The kid from HJ (two seasons ago) is a prime example. Too many kids get the hype but don't realize their skills (mental & physical)don't transfer into big time D-1 players. -

Let it be known that The Dove wishes a 2009 championship in the SLC for the LU Cards. I just think the LU PR guys do a good job of selling their recruits to the LU fans. At least these guys will help LU with their graduation rate for athletes. One thing that doesn't make sense to me Dove is, why would Coach Roccaforte hype his recruits? I mean if he doesn't win with guys that are suppose to be all-world then the reason for losing falls on the head coach's shoulders. Did Coach Roc hype some players as an assistant? Maybe, but I promise you he is smart enough to know if he hypes his players as the head coach and they don't produce he may be looking for a new job in a couple of years. Especially with the coaching staff he has put together. Forgive me, you probably think the coaching staff is hyped by the PR department? Where exactly is the PR department in the Montagne Center? I'd like to stop by and chat with those guys. Dang Above, you ask some good questions. So what part of the LU sports dept. do you work Anyway, all good coaches justify why a certain player was signed and there is no problem with this method. But the LU Sports Info Dept. has a history of building these players up and some of us on this forum use the term "stud" to describe their play. LU history tells me not to buy into that type of hype. The kid (stud)who signed with Utah in 2006. I did some checking on him. One ranking service has him #300. Little bitty Nic Wise (5'9") from Kingwood High was in the top 200, if not the top 150. But this stud did attend some major camps and performed well in front of some coaches. Plus the deciding factor is that this kid seems to have a good academic head. Rock will say after a losing season that at least the kids are graduating. If Rock stays at LU long enough, this will be his justification that the program is heading in the right direction. Oh yeah, they use to be in room 137 back in the day. -

Actually I haven't looked at the current roster. There is no need because I've looked at it for the past 20 years and the same results. The recruiting period brings about overrated bios on most of these players. If they were really good, they would have signed at a major D-1 school. I wonder if this kid lost his scholarship at Utah? I am a little confused with your posts, BLUEDOVE. Are you implying that folks on this board believe Lamar is on an even playing field with the major D-I schools across this country and should be getting major D-I recruits? Or is it that you think Lamar fans try to make mountains out of molehills with the recruits they get? "Lamar fans try to make mountains out of molehills with the recruits they get!!!!" -
