Central QB Mitchell has Lamar Offer
cougar14 replied to BMTSoulja1's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I hope the best for Robert. He may get a D1a school to offer this late, but not likely. Most probably already have their QB's lined up and unless he has been talking to coaches consistently the bigger offer probably won't come. Not impossible - just not likely this late. Now if he was still playing, like the Georgetown QB, hat could change some minds.
You're right but I don't think the bigger schools are recruiting him to play QB anyway. I'm sure Lamar is but he projects more as an "athlete" for the FBS schools. I think an FBS school like Texas State, UTSA, or North Texas could eventually offer him if he runs well on his recruiting trip. A lot of lower tier FBS schools give out late December or January offers to seniors after their top targeted commit to bigger schools. For example, here's UTSA offer sheet. Since they're a lower tier school you see more than usual October through December commits than the normal FBS sheet which is why I think when the dust clears around mid-January he'll have better offers.
This website admins lets Dayton, BH, Summercreek go for days posting different threads poking fun at each other. And usually its all just for fun. Why can't WOS and some other fans just take it as a joke. I dont think anybody is taking the great season, they had away. WOS loss is just a loss. But the fans that bleed blue and silver wear their feelings on their sleeves. But all we heard all year long in all CAPS from nasty is how great yall are..
I have to say I agree. BH, Dayton, SC, and Crosby trade a lot bigger and better blows than that. Never saw a remark made about one specific kid from WOS. It's probably one of the relatives of a kid on the team. You should read some of these kids facebook pages and the stuff they put on there. I'm not one to say how a parent should raise their kid but not pointing out a 17 or 18 year old young man did something wrong on a field is the exact reason some of those same kids two or three years later can't own up to mistakes they make off the field. My oldest son is 12 and my oldest nephew 10, when they play like trash after the game I tell them "you looked like garbage". The majority of the time the reply to that is "I know" with a reason/excuse that soon follows. Never once has either said "you're hurting my feelings". Matter of fact I usually only have to say it once a year, but I do know some kids are softer than others.

I think Crosby should look at themselves a lot like the state semi-final team they lost to in Manor. Great offensively and play just enough defense. Our identity is what it is, just try to outscore you. We're losing one lineman and two receivers and Riordan has to coach the D up on defending the pass but with 15 starters coming back from a team that lost to a potential state champion I think it's regional championship or bust for the Cougars next year.
-
Crosby has nearly 4500 yards returning in the backfield including one of the most prolific rushers in the SETX area in the last decade. With about 1500 yards next year Austin Walter will break the 5000 yards career rushing mark. Aston Walter should end his career with at least 8000 total yards (passing and rushing). Crosby is bringing back 8 of 11 starters on a team that had it not been for a second half implosion to Manor could be in the semifinals just like they are right now. We're also bringing back Raelon Singleton who to my surprise is turning out to be on of the most highly recruited receivers in the area for the 2014 class. Crosby is going to have to find out a way to stop somebody next year or we could be 8-4 again.

Just wait till they get the wrecking crew in line.
Is Johnny that good or is Sumlin? Keenum's passing numbers dwarfs Manziel's. If A&M went 6-6 in the SEC Sumlin wouldn't be flipping all these guys. Besides Joekel and Matthews there weren't any stars on A&M's roster before he got there. Only kid besides those two A&M had committed that was a high school blue chipper is Trey Williams, Evans was a basketball player. It's clear Sumlin is a better coach than Sherman was but the real reason he's going to start dominating the recruiting in Texas is because the African-American parents in the state are excited to have a school to send their kids to that has an African-American head coach. Same reason the minorities vote in a landslide for Obama, doesn't make it right but that's just how it is.
Sorry coog.... i'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. It has nothing to do with having an african american coach. Its just the demeanor of Coach Sumlin as an individual. He has always been able taking care of business, and he does a great job of motivating he players to give their best every night. He doesnt pressure is players into feeling like the HAVE to win every night like BAMA & LSU... Also he has great supporting staff. Him being african american is just a plus... ;)
Of course someone that's not African-American would say that. You replace Mack Brown with Kevin Sumlin and ALL of those kids he flipped stay at UT. What's the difference, they want to play in the SEC where most of these kids parents that come from disadvantaged homes won't be able to see them play more than a couple times a year? At UT those same kids parents could make it to 6 or 7 Big 12 games. I'm not playing the race card at all, I'm just telling you from a different point of view that its clear you don't think exist. Is it a coincidence that all the players he flipped are African-American? How else do you think he's getting these kids to come to a school where barely 3% of the kids on campus look like them and a large portion of those are athletes too? Tradition? The 12th man? They want to maroon out? My cousin was an All-American at North Shore and was recruited by UT and A&M. Said the two places as far as facilities and a place to live weren't even close, which is why he committed in February barely a week after signing day. What's changed, the Kyle Field seating capicity? If Sumlin was at UT or TCU he would recruit the same way he's starting to now and A&M's move to the SEC would have them 6-6. I bet if it was available Sumlin would ditch A&M in a hurry for a chance to go to UT, and I'm telling you that as a graduate of the A&M system. Old habits die hard down here for the African-Americans too, to think anything otherwise would be going through life with blinders on. I guess if you have never walked a day in those shoes it easy not to need a walking stick though. -
Yeah it is a good thing that Saban is African American too don't you think!
It's the state school in Alabama, just like Texas is. Gene Stallings recruited the south just like Saban does and won a national title. Most of those kids were coming anyway. You give a great coach great talent and that's what he does. A run of the mill coach can also win with great talent, Larry Coker and Lane Kiffin for example. When those coaches don't get the best talent anymore they get exposed like Mack Brown is, on the other hand you take Sumlin from UH and they're a joke. Look at the commitment dates UT players have on profile, most are before April or May of their junior year's with a large portion of them being in February or April. UT has been a dream for the majorty of these kids. Why all of a sudden can A&M get some of the best players in the state, the move to the SEC? No! It's because when Kevin Sumlin talks to an inner city kid's Mom like Justin Manning he tells her, "Look, I'm from South Alabama and was once like your son. I understand what he's going through/will go through. Send him to me and I'll take care of him." It's all about getting recruits, that's why Tubberville just left Lubbock for Cinci. -
As a husband of a teacher, you don't want me to get started on how much she would make if you broke it down by the hour that she spends at the school. Not near enough...as far as discrepancy in enrollment numbers between schools in the same classification, that does not just occur in 4A, but in all 5 levels. Examples: 5A- North Shore 4600, Memorial 2270. 4A- Central 1840, Lumberton 1087. 3A- Silsbee 822, Buna 450. 2A- Kirbyville 425, Newton 300.
That's exactly why I say enrollment first, then an efficient passing game. We play in the district with SC (2019) and BH (1387). Last year 3a La Marque was in a district with three 4a schools with over 2k enrollment (Manvel, Friendswood, Dawson). Even with that enrollment though SC would have lost more games if they weren't strictly a passing team. You see what happened to the best defensive team in the area (Ned) once they played a team with an elite passing game. I think SC would've done the same to them. In the Austin area they spread it to throw it, down here we spread it to run it and throw it when we need to. Harder to recover on a mistake on a passing play than one on a running play. Over here we want to run the ball and play defense, in Austin they want to sling it and just make a play on defense. I don't think money influences any of those decisions.

This is what a good African-American coach can do for a program, especially in the south. Kevin Sumlin has now flipped Thomas Johnson, Seals-Jones, and just picked up Justin Manning who I think is the best d-tackle in the state. Before Sumlin got there TAMU was very unlikely to get the top players in the state, especially if they were African-American. Very hard for those kids to blend in College Station and feel like it's a second home unlike Austin or the DFW area. He has also gotten Kameron Miles to decommit from Tennessee. Eldridge Massington has not yet committed to TAMU but is looking like a likely target for Sumlin, Massington is a USC decommit. If A&M can continue to keep winning they're going to blow Texas out of the water in recruiting which has been the Horns lifeblood for a decade, it seems like unless you were an All-American in high school UT wouldn't offer you in the past. A&M is fitting right along in the SEC though, I believe UT didn't offer Manning yet because he was a non-qualifier last time I checked.
I think its more about Johnny Manziel and the SEC, but Sumlin was the right choice for A&M at this moment in History. The other coach recruited Johnny Football, Sumlin was smart to start him.
I agree, but Sumlin made Manziel. If he was this good he would have started over Tannehill last year. If Sherman was still there they would be 6-6 right now just like they were last year in the Big 12. There's a reason Manziel was playing receiver on the scout team last year, he barely won the job a few days before the season started. He was also the # 40 qb in his class and A&M was his best offer. When you start giving Sumlin guys near the top of their class like Mack Brown has been getting at Texas I think he's going to turn into Steve Spurrier. -
You can make all the excuses you want but as far as football reasons go it's because of enrollment first and the SETX inability to develop elite passing games second. Georgetown, Manor, Cedar Park, and Rouse all have better passing games than anyone in the area except Summer Creek. Maybe not as many yards but definitely more efficient. In the SETX you get the big rushing numbers like Walter, Hopkins, and Quirante had. I think Euless Trinity or Cedar Hill are the only two teams to win a 5 or 4a state championship the last several years that didn't sling the ball all over the field. It's easy for Georgetown to neutralize Ned's d-line if you have 4 guys on the outside that can catch and run, who cares about running the ball? Money is part of the issue also but less than people think, I believe it's the participation of males those schools with money have. North Shore, Trinity, Desoto, Cedar Hill, and Skyline are there every year and far from what anyone would consider affluent, they just have better athletes than everyone else which translates to better teams. Manor might be the poorest school in the district, 91% minority and 79% below the poverty line not to mention nobody even comes to their games, they just have better athletes than other teams as Georgetown did over Ned. Surprised to see there's an AD in Texas making more than Chad Morris was at Lake Travis but I hope this post gets you to lean more towards antiquated offenses and participation vs money.

Disappointing year for the SETX in the playoffs. I think it's clear where the best 4a football in the state was played. District 17-4a 1st and 2nd place teams both playing for a shot at the state title against the district 25-4a 1st and 3rd place teams, not to mention Austin Westlake playing in the 5a-d2 semis. We're going to have to step it up in the SETX next year. Newton turned out to be the most legitimate contender in the area. Very disappointing that even after getting Lake Travis and Manvel out of 4a nobody in the SETX could take advantage. Well, I guess there's always next year.

5A Georgetown commits its 2nd 4A robbery vs Angleton!
cougar14 replied to DemDAWGS!'s topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I support all the teams from 19-4a but SC has got to stop saying they lost to a 5a school. Georgtown was 5a and couldn't get within a game of .500. They are smaller than SC, Dawson, and Friendswood. Ned just took out the school with most likely the largest enrollment in all of 4a. SC lost to Georgetown because they can't play defense just like Crosby and BH. Dayton couldn't either but Ned doesn't have a high powered offense, they just play some serious D which is proving to work better than the outscoring you route everyone else in 19-4a took. SC was close to being the biggest school in 4a this year and could be the largest next year. Doesn't matter how long you've played varsity, the guys on the team have been playing as long as any other kid's teams you've played. Hard to accept playoff losses for whatever reason, but the longer SC plays varsity the more you'll see every time you don't win a state championship there's an excuse. Make sure you don't mistake excuses for reasons. -
Crosby's problem all year has been their inability to play two halves of football. Either we play the first or second 24 which is the reason after Crosby had the 24-13 lead at the half I still didn't feel too comfortable. Manor had a couple passes I thought really helped them out, one where the qb was about to get sacked and threw up a punt and Crosby's defender fell down and left #10 wide open and another where the Crosby db deflected a pass but it hit a Manor defender and was caught on a tip for a big gain. We didn't make the plays and Manor did which is why we lost though. I really think the determining factor in the game was Manor's ability to keep Austin Walter in check, he was held to his lowest total of the season since the Nederland game. The three and outs we had to start the second were because we couldn't give it to Austin and let him get the 10 ypc he's been averaging all season. Manor only ran about 5 plays but they have great athletes that wear you down over time, especially on the offensive side of the ball even though they play guys both ways. Only thing there is to be optimistic about is the fact we have 8 starters coming back on the offense including the twins and Singleton who saved his best game of the season for the playoffs. If Crosby finds the personnel on defense for next year it should be at least a 13 or 14 game season, just kind of worried with the number of potential college commits on this team for next year will we actually have a "team" instead a collection of talented individuals that sometime play together which has been Crosby's issue for a while now.

Crosby has still not executed properly in the redzone, first time all year I think playcalling could be questioned. 1st and goal from the 5 and your 2000 yard back doesn't get a touch and we settle for a fg. Defense is what I thought it would be though, Manor had a long pass we tipped to them or it could be worse. Crosby is moving it pretty easy though.
