  1. The state or federal government could care less the state championships, district titles, or hours a coach puts into a year. The schools are not there for sports, they are there for education. Whereas I do agree athletics are an important part of helping kids to become better citizens I do not agree that they are worth more than teachers. We predominantly talk about high school sports. Prior to a kid coming to high school they have 8-9 years in a classroom without organized sports. Are those formative teachers worth less than an individual who coaches a few months of the year? I'm talking head coach such as football. Assistant coaches usually do not make the "big" bucks. Look at Port Arthur....do more folks complain because they do not go far athletically or do they complain due to the school not performing academically? Whereas I understand a coach feeling pressure to win, the entire school feels pressure to succeed with TAKS. Whether standardized testing is beneficial is debatable, but it is the reality faced.
  2. I have felt Dayton would make the playoffs all along.
  3. I will have to say in '89 Silsbee vs Liberty. Silsbee had just come off of a nice playoff run in '88 and was a favorite. Silsbee had struggled early to find a qb to replace Randy Matthews from the '88 season. Liberty jumped out to a 17-0 lead. It was late 4th quarter Silsbee decided to try out sophomore sensation Bryan Doss. Anyone from the early 90s era probably remembers this guy. He also was the kicker. He kicked a fg and immediately followed with 2 tds. The Tigers tie the game up with seconds remaining. Doss lines up for the xtra point and it bounces off of the lower crossbar. The game ends in a tie 17-17. A few weeks later Silsbee knocks off #2 rated Jasper and ends with a district 4-1-1 record but misses the playoffs due to Liberty having more penetrations in the earlier game.
  4. How did Sterling look? We have them in 2 weeks.
  5. I hope people do not get too caught up in these scrimmages. What happens in "preseason" means nothing. I am sure a lot of coaches are experimenting with different kids. A score against a 2nd team is great for scrimmages but not reality on most Friday nights.
  6. Yep. People were squealing when I believe it was Chris that formed well east of Cuba. We are gun shy now.
  7. So for those who attended both Nederland scrimmages would you say Jasper or Silsbee looks better thus far? I realize teams during week 2 scrimmages are a lot further along than week 1 but a comparison would still be nice.
  8. Kountze also has some of the worst fans. Sutherland had a very sweet situation and was loaded with talent but still decided to leave due to fans and parents. I remember sitting in the "Drum" in Austin when Ashton Hall was a freshman. People in the section I was sitting wanted Sutherland fired for losing to a more talented Gainseville in the finals. It is amazing how some fans can become spoiled to success. A lot of teams would love to just make the playoffs, but the Kountzes,Ozens, and now Silsbees must advance quite a bit for most fans to be happy. Sad how much pressure coaches are under to make a bunch of kids successful sometimes.
  9. I missed the Silsbee scrimmage this week, but coach Williams informed me it was getting ugly quick. Silsbee pretty much dominated both sides of the ball.
  10. I guess I do not understand this kind of talk. #1 it was the 1st scrimmage...a controlled scrimmage at that #2 Silsbee is supposed to be good this year. Is Silsbee not supposed to beat Nederland on occassion?
  11. Glad I wasn't the only one to pose the question.
  12. If they do in fact change the name at least change the mascot to something more appropriate for the area. Cardinals? How about 'Skeeters.
  13. 1st scrimmage jitters The reality is Nederland and Silsbee should both be good this year. I don't think anyone should have predicted a route in this scrimmage.
  14. I figured as much. It was Silsbee's second team as well. Second series. I was impressed with some of our young guys. I definitely can see some of those kids getting more action.
  15. I remember a certain 80s WOS team knocking off the #1 5A team. I also remember a Newton team beating Ozen.
  16. Why must we have 5A to be considered a powerhouse area?
  17. The brave young man left us just before 11:00 this morning. Please keep his family in your prayers.
  18. Silsbee's Hickman family needs prayers. Coach Hickman is a coach for Silsbee and his wife is the business manager in WOS. Their boy Nate has been battling cancer for right at a year. Things are in dire straits and prayers are desperately needed.
  19. Tear in the muscle above the knee is what I was told earlier this evening. As Coop said surgery is very likely.
  20. Silsbee plays Newton this year as well. That could be a good game.
  21. If LCM did in fact get the new scoreboard think of all those WOS tds you will get to see twice.
