  1. I'm not sure how long Gil Stabaum @ BH has been coaching. Wins, percentage-wise, I'd think he would make the list.
  2. Fair enough. I think in my son's case, it was having the good fortune of being around some of the best select coaches and a top program than it is being around lesser high school coaches. BH has had a good baseball program for quite some time. My take on this subject is in defense of the select programs, the good ones anyway ( Houston Heat, SE Texas SunDevils, Kyle Chapman to name a few ) than a negative view of high school coaches. Select coaches coach baseball. High school coaches are teachers first and coaches second. Many times coaching baseball as a second sport. There is alot more on a high school coach's plate than there is on a coach of a select team. Finally, the bottom line is...you are simply going to get more exposure on the select summer teams.
  3. That's probably just old age....don't you think ;D ;D ;D
  4. Whoa...slow down there Bama....4 in the high eighty's...don't think so. Burditt will "touch"/"top out at" 87, Rocha may "touch' 86, Peterson and Mitchell ..83-86. Big difference btw. throwing in the high eighty's and touching 87 a time or two per game. I'm not knocking BH pitching...I think they will do just fine this year. Having 4 guys on a 4A squad throwing low to mid eighty's ain't bad.
  5. Barbers Hill made a run in '07 to the Region III semi-finals....were #8 in one of the final state rankings. Hales and Campbell played for SE Texas SunDevils, Thamm for the Houston Heat, Silva w/ the Knights and Magic, Garner w/ the Knights in the summer season. Oops, forgot..Rocha w/ the Knights and Kelley w/ the Ft Bend Texans. I think it would be great if an entire high school team could play off-season together. Back in my day, this was against UIL regs. Has this changed ? Not trying to start anything, but you may have just proved retiredoldcoaches' point. Because how did that group fair in 08 when most where seniors? They lost in the area round. Pitcher w/ a dead arm and a key player not passing classes having to sit on the bench were the major reasons for not advancing. Lack of hitting in key situations was another. Had nothing to do w/ playing select ball. And the dead arm was not from throwing all summer in select ball. The kid threw a total of 13 innings all summer w/ his select team. So, select ball gets credit one season when things go well. IYO. (Not sure semifinals with that group is where I would have set the bar) But when things don't go well they don't share in the blame. It must have been the highschool coaches fault they lost and someone elses when they won. Typical. Wow...what a stretch. Could you please explain to me how you got out of my post that it was the high school coaches fault that BH lost ? I said nothing remotely close to such. Also, the Regional sem-finals is a fairly high bar w/ any group. You have to get past some really good teams to reach state....teams that are also capable of reaching state. The two pitchers from Montgomery that beat BH in'07....one played pro ball lastyear and the other played at SHSU on scholarship....by the way, they both played select ball. To clarify a little more. The kids I listed on the '07 team that played select was to give an example that playing select did not hurt the high school team. Unlike you, I think reaching the Regional semi's is a successful season. It wasn't to show that because these kids played select, the high school team was good.....although it certainly didn't hurt....which was my point. Believe it or not, there are many ways to lose a playoff series that have nothing to do with the coaches or select ball. It has more to do with the kids taking care of business..............on the field and in the classroom.
  6. Most high school coaches also coach 3 sports, have families, and during the summertime are preparing for the upcoming football season. They also like to get a little fishing in and what have you. Most high school coaches are volunteering their time helping their kids little dribbler basketball team, their sons little league team, or their daughters softball team. A good coach is also going to be a good evaluator of talent so he isn't going to have to go trapsing around southeast texas lurking around select games to watch little Nolan Ryan. I've known select coaches who coach these teams because they've been removed from high school ball, or had trouble in the classroom. I'll take a high school coach any day over a select coach. That is a broad and ignorant post. One of the premier select organizations in the state is run by Mike Rutledge(Kyle Chapman). He and his staff do all of their work pro bono--no charge for their services--in fact he spends a lot of his own money on this organization. All they look for are kids with talent who love to play the game. They do not tolerate attitude problems. What they are trying to do is help young talented boys turn into talented men while staying on the right path. If someones kid is playing on a team with a coach as you describe then he is on the wrong team or playing for the wrong reason. Exactly the same w/ Phil Cross and the Houston Heat. Also, the Heat organization goes out of there way to stress your high school team comes first.Period, no exceptions.
  7. I agree with what you are saying except every time a team under achieves it cannot always be blamed on select ball and individualism. It certainly doesn't apply to the BH team of '08. I've given the reasons for BH's '08 demise in general. I could go into much greater detail but probably would not be appropriate on an open forum.

  9. Angelina dropped the second game, 9-7. Thamm (BH) 5 2/3 innings, 3 runs, 2 earned, 4 K's, 1 BB. Angelina will host Galveston on Wednesday. The Roadrunners will be at the Blinn tournamant with two games aon Friday, the 13th and two on Sunday, the 15th.
  10. Ah ex-coach, there is one missing ingredient in your statement, and it's possible you were making it a point as well..... Select players have nothing to do with teams. IMO, you're in select ball to be if not the best, then one of the best. All thats personal traaining is for the individual to get better, not the team. Players want to play against the so-called best to get themselves better. Most select players, in baseball anyway, are trying to get a college education paid for. Many high school coaches, not all, no longer get involved in this. Scouts and college recruiters will tell you that it's much easier and more sensible to go watch 30-40 players at a select tournament than to go see one or two guys at a high school game. Now, they will go watch the top talent at a high school game.

  12. You're on the wrong select team. That hasn't been the case in our experiences. I'm too old to play ball and I have very little dealings with select ball. As I said earlier ( most cases --not all)............................. I'm honestly not trying to start anything here...but if you have very little dealings w/ select ball, as you say.....how are you qualified to make the statement you made ? lol! I was thinking the same thing. I couldn't resist. ;D

  14. I agree with this also. What many people/parents seem to forget....these high school coaches are teachers first ( as previously mentioned ). Furthermore, most not all, are football coaches that are forced to coach or help coach another sport. We are in Texas...where football is still king. If a player comes along whose talent is obvious, rather it came from playing select or not, most of these coaches have enough sense to not mess with him and just let him play ball.

  16. Ok here goes.... :'( Angelina update.....Ac drops doubleheader to Temple, 9-5 & 19-4.Ouch. I did not make the games, as a result no details. For some reason, Angelina has started slow the last few years. Last year they started 1-8 before turning things around. This year doesn't seem to be any different. AC will host Alvin tomorrow. Doubleheader (2/7's) starting @ noon.
  17. Smesny, P, SR, Dayton....underated...lost JR season to injury. 8-0 as a soph. Dayton newcomer to 19-4A from GT. District MVP ??? ??? In 19-4A, Dayton will win most, if not all, games that this kid is on the bump. 2 cents.
  18. Hey, Bobcat...you are an Adminstrator. PM me...I can only "PM" after being " PM'D" ..Please Help. ;D ;D
  19. Why the hostility toward Ponder? I have seen him play many times and he has always excelled--he is a VERY GOOD player---so what gives? I was wondering the same thing. And I'm also curious....how exactly are all-district and all-state teams picked ? Based on eagle0911's post, I don't think they are picked the way he/she thinks they are. Please enlighten.
