3.
It has been since Nov. 29, scooter do the honors......
Gabe....we must be on the same page. I just getting ready to post on this thread...for it's been awhile.  :o I'll wait for Scooter to do the honors.
 4.
No disrespect to any other teams or games, but this is the game of the week throughout the entire state....
I agree...this ought to be a good one.
 5.
Thanks Mac, I know after texting yesteday you didnt really care to write on this site, but thanks for spelling it out. Will Henderson from Lamar played independent, Derek Blacksher(Bridge City-McNeese) who's had 2 tremendous seasons the past 2 yrs pitches up in St Louis, Kevin Millar worked the same path, Mike Trahan recruiting coach at ULL, played for SCHUAMBERG. Sean Obannion from Vidor High played as well.   So it may be a small percentage who get to sign MLB Franchise contracts coming out of independent ball, yet its still an opportunity for those who get somewhat overlooked by the 'MLB amatuer' draft coming out of college.
Chris.. Thought I share a story about my favorite "independent leaguer" with you and the others on this thread. It's a story of perseverance and the opportunity that independent league ball can provide, as you mentioned. I'm biased to left handed-pitching  ;D ;D The name is George Sherrill, currently the late set-up and sometime southpaw closer for the LA Dodgers. The following is Sherrill's journey to "The Show". Jackson State CC, transferred and played 3 years for Austin Peay College in Tennessee. ( Sherrill grew up in Tennesse ). Undrafted out of college, signs with the Evansville Otters of the Independent Frontier League and plays for two seasons. In 2001, George gets traded to the Sioux Falls Canaries of the Independent Northern League, pitches one season. In 2002, traded to the Winnepeg Goldeyes of the Northern League. In July 2003 gets his 1st break and is signed by the Seattle Mariners, plays AA ball rest of the season. After season gets to play in Arizona Fall League and impresses. 2004- Sherrill pitches in AAA for Seattle. Makes his MLB debut in July 2004 at age 27. In 2005, splits time between AAA and MLB w/ Seattle. Sherrill has breakout season in 2007...now almost 30 years old and a pitcher. He's been counting money ever since. After being traded to Baltimore, Sherrill saves 52 games over 2 seasons and makes the 2008 All-Star game. In 2009, traded from last place Baltimore to title contender LA Dodgers. LA is currently rumoured to be trading Sherrill.....he's up for arbitration.   What a story IMO.....about a kid ( not any longer ) that is determined to pitch in the "bigs". Chris, One of Kendall's pitching coaches is friends w/ Sherrill from their Winnepeg days.........otherwise I wouldn't know all of this. Just thought I share.
 6.

Some kids are NOT scholars, if not for BB I would have had to pay some serious $$$$, although mine was recruited and signed early with Lamar in 98 he elected to go the JUCO route, he/we have not regretted going that route, you will find most JUCOs are in a small town inviroment and easy to fit in, some are indeed Baseball factories. Some how mine even got a scholarship for summer school, I asked no question and got no lies...  [/quote]????? he signed with Lamar?? Lamar is a D1..... Or was he recruited by Lamar and turned them down and went JUCO???  Lamar does not offer many scholarships to SETX.  If Gilligan did, he would have a better team then he already has....... He expects these kids to come scholarship free....... He is obsessed on getting kids from NY (where he is from) and Australia (go scouting trip right paid by school). In one case, told a kid from Hardin Jefferson that he was no good and could not play at a D1 level. The kid went JUCO and was all conference, then got a full ride to Mc Neese and was their #1 pitcher for a couple years, then was drafted as a #1 pick in simi pro and played up north for a couple of years.  Gilligan was pissed at the JUCO coach did not send him back and would not send him any more players.  This kid went and tried out, Gilligan did not send him there........ Don't understand him at all......... Maybe someone could tell him when you see him drinking it up on the town!!!!!!!
You can sign a letter of intent for D1 and then decide to go JUCO.
 7. Awesome. Happy Birthday indeed. What a great site. Thanks for all of the hard work you guys put in.
 8.
Ron Polk(former Miss. State coach) used to bash the NCAA every time he spoke because he felt that the way scholarships were awarded was unfair. This is all the more reason to make good grades in school. A school would much rather recruit a player who they can offer an academic scholarship to or combine it with an athletic scholarship to help cover there fees. Parents should make this clear with their child when they enter high school that if they do well all four years of high school, it can greatly improve their chances of playing at the next level.
Excellent advice, coach.
 9.
That's why a lot of very good players go the JUCO route.  They can give out 24 scholarships and all are full rides.  Also if the kid works as hard in the class as he does on the field, academic scholarships can pick up the rest of the tab. Or you could move to Louisiana and the state will pick up the difference --      [Hidden Content] More info [Hidden Content]
Many valid reasons to go JUCO.. Main reason top teir players are in JUCO is to go thru the draft process in the next year.....not three years later. Very, very solid baseball in JUCO...especially(sic)  in Texas/Calif/Fla.
 10. Earl is BMOC....he's coming back....... :o :o :o HOOK EM HORNS !
 11. 'JR" better be special.  ;) or at least left-handed.  ;) Only looking for one of the 11.7 full ones. All 11.7 of them will be going to somebody.
 12.
and when he was here i was on the field playing for him, and every other coach on that staff, so dont question how loyal i was to the man. you dont know me , so dont question me
Please take your meds.  ;)
 13.
My kid plays select because he can't get enough baseball.  League was never enough and the school season is not long enough. Select affords him the opportunity to play more ball, which improves his skills. It provides him extra exposure, I can't rely on his high school coach only. Lots of parents work busy schedules and cannot work hands on with their kids to better their skills & high school coaches work with the teams, not individuals.  Select is one more place a child can receive training, instruction and exposure.........how can there be anything wrong with that?  Select needs to be viewed as a tool to additional training and with any training/lessons there is a cost for the services.  The only effect on the high school team is that the team and coach have a kid on the team that has some extra experience. As a parent I have to provide my child all the opportunites I can.  I'm not wasting my money, I'm investing in my child and the only promises being made are by us, his parents.
Very well said, I could not have said it any better. If I wasn't spending money on select baseball for "Lil Johnny", I'd be spending it on him for something else. Kids need to stay busy this days.
 14.
Well it is very obvious that most if not all of you have kids that play select ball. I want to clear up some of the statments made here. My "little Johnny" had the opportunity and invitation to play select ball, he chose not to join. His and only his decission, I did not care one way or the other. The point that is being missed in all of the post on here is what the post title is all about. "Select Baseball effect on high school Baseball". I state once again that it is a negative effect on the team. My little Johnny has played with most every select player in the area and he has told me (without my input) that some are really good guys and team players but the majority are only out for themselves and bring down the team chemistry. If you cant handle that then you and your little Johnny are  probably in the last catagory.Keep throwing away your money on a hope and a dream and lets talk more after he graduates and is left with no scholorship and you have lots of bills and tuition to pay while you are left feeling like he let you down and you are broke while the select coach laughs all the way to the bank.
Not one to to toot our horn but you brought it up. Mine has 2 years paid at 100% including housing and food. Has signed an early letter of intent to play is junior year @ D1 @ 85% including housing and out-of-state tution......mostly like will enter the draft. I speak w/ his two select coaches on an almost daily basis for advice, friendship, etc. Not sure what high school ya'll play at but no way mine could've done this w/o playing select ball. BTW, there are several ways to trim/cut costs involved w/ playing select. The memories and friends my son and I have made thru his select ball will last a lifetime. Go Houston Heat and SE Texas Sun Devils !
 15. Happy Thanksgiving everyone...travel safely. Best of luck to all SETX playoff teams. Horns/Ags Thurs night w/ my son home from AC Texas Hold Em- Friday Katy/Laporte or Brenham/Angleton on Saturday w/ "JR" again. ;D ;D ;D ;D
 16.
I am glad 78Stang that you clarified your comment and I am sorry you have had a negative experience with Select Baseball. My son has played Select ball for seven years and is beginning his third season of Highschool ball. I have not seen the problems you have descibed. We have several Select players on our Highschool team and I have not heard any complaints. These young men tend to be the leaders of the team and not the source of moral problems. A Select player generally brings to a team a better understanding of the game. This all comes from hard work and most coaches reward hard work whether you are a Select player or not. As for as the "Prima Donas" you described, I can only say that my son has been taught that the team comes first and he needs to do his job. His job is to play the very best baseball he can. I've seen that quality in the other Select players on our team. I believe the experiences you have had are not in the "majority" that you described.
Ditto.
 17. .............caught w/ another Cy Young.  ;)
 18.

I personally think it is a terrible idea. What I have seen first hand over the years is that a select player is an absolute distraction to a high school baseball team. What happens in most, but not all cases is that the rest of the team sees the select player a prima-donna and most of the time the player thinks of himself as such. He is usually the coach favorite and gets special treatment from the coach. The rest of the team resents that fact and he becomes an out-cast while it ruins the team chemistry from there on. The rest of the team has worked just as hard and put in just as much time practicing but they dont get the credit that select players get for doing the same thing. Select ball has ruined all levels of baseball and most parents are also to blame for getting caught up in it. But to be honest- this is the U.S.A. and money talks!
Select ball is a competitive league. As a kid it takes extream dedication and desire to achieve. Which says alot about the kids work ethic to start out. They do this year round. Instead of playstation. As a parent it is very demanding. It just depends on what the kid is wanting and supporting his or her desires. If Your child Has to much idle time on there hands they will find something to do to fill the time. And you may not like what that is. I choose to support my child with productive things as a family. And select ball happens to be something he wants to do. He has a desire to be better. And he definitely works for it. As for coaches go. I would say that they know the work it takes to play select ball and most are looking for players with this work ethic. And players that truly have the desire to play the game. Not only at this level but beyond. As far as attitude. you would not find a more respectfull person. I have always seen him try and help the others with baseball. and there is no one he feels is below him that is for sure. he is friends with everyone. So I think Select ball is good for the kids and Highschool Ball.
Nice post..Cats. I agree..Select ball taught my kid more than just baseball.....made quite a few friends along the way too. Some of the best times and memories my son and I will have involve some of the trips we made and games he played.
