Just received word that Coach John Payton has passed away. He was a coach, teacher and mentor to a great many of us. Coach Payton was the role model that many of us hoped to be. Not a day goes by that I don't remember something Coach Payton shared with me. Still throughout my career, long after I left Lamar, Coach Payton would call or text after a big win or a not so great loss just to check on me. A true professional and a great gentleman. He will be sorely missed by many. Prayers and thoughts go out to the Payton family. L.

No doubt Big Sandy has been the gold standard in 2A(1A before the re-numbering) for some time. The comment about a "rare" Evadale victory over B.S. last year is somewhat incorrect. The current coaching staff in 5 starts against the Wildcats has won 4 out of 5. And yes, Big Sandy plays with great fundamental skill, but don't sleep on the Rebels.

I remember Brookeland High School being a real good small school program a few years ago. Can anyone tell me how the program is doing these days. I remember them winning a state championship. Actually saw them win it in Austin. Who is coaching the team these days? Thanks for the help.

The Lady Rebels are the real deal. Well coached, well prepared. There was never a doubt who would win this game. LHS has a talented group that plays with no direction.
