71st Border Battle: La Porte vs. Deer Park
OlDawg replied to Addieman's topic in High School Football
Ha! Just started a thread. La Porte is in SETX coverage area. Is King Phillips still at DP? He was a very good WR. LP looked very solid at scrimmage against Dobie. They return a lot—including entire backfield & most of OL. I think the D returns about 8 if I recall correctly. Heard the Deer looked good at their scrimmage also. -
71st Border Battle: La Porte vs. Deer Park
OlDawg replied to Addieman's topic in High School Football
71st meeting. The Deer have won 3 in a row, and the series is basically knotted up. Both teams are coming off solid seasons and PO’s in 6A & 5A respectively. Last year, DP won 41-20 at Abshier & this year’s matchup is at Abshier again as La Porte completes their new stadium. Reports are that both squads had really solid scrimmages. Abshier is always a tough place to play. But, I’m actually going with the Dawgs this year to break the Deer streak. The program participation is up and the excitement is back for LP in year 3 of Coach Berneathy’s tenure. Big things are expected with this group. Who you got? -
Pending… But, went by La Porte’s soon completed digs. Really like the horseshoe/split level design. Reminds me of a smaller college style stadium. It’s looking sweet.

DQ stays. It’s a fixture. Used to be Mama & my ‘date night.’ DQ pregame. I’m a big spender. 😂🤣

Good article. La Porte returns similar. With the coaching ties between the schools, should be a good battle. Do you have a link to La Porte’s 2024 outlook?

Congrats to Coach LaReau for being inducted into the GHFCA Hall of Honor. Coach LaReau lead the Bulldogs to three District Championships, twelve PO appearances, and two State Quarterfinal berths in his 14 years. He owns 15 career PO wins while at La Porte. All of this was accomplished while La Porte was consistently one of the—if not the—smallest 6A schools in the state. Congratulations on well deserved recognition Coach.

Does seem like a mismatch. LP returns quite a bit. I don’t have the magazine. But, district looks to be in alphabetical order based on what you’ve typed here… Barring something really unforeseen, I don’t see La Porte missing the PO’s. @Matthew328

My info also.

That would be awesome. I know some families of seniors are really hoping it’s good to go for their graduation as well. That—I think—is easily doable. Again, depending on hurricane season this year. I keep hearing a busier than normal year. Let’s all hope not.

Ha! Didn’t work out too horrible last year.

Yeah. I just don’t see it (hosting) unless the field itself is ready and fans aren’t allowed yet. I could see the field itself being ready. Or, they could set up bleachers at the new auxiliary field I guess. I don’t think there’s a completion bonus big enough to push through a schedule of less than 12 months. Just getting the materials/scheduling space in the laydown yard is pushing it in that timeframe. For the cost involved, I don’t see the admin pushing schedule over quality control. LPISD is generally a pretty good steward of funds/deliverables.

I had actually been told by a former coach that Abseck had declined allowing La Porte to use Eagle Stadium this year. But, I take it as just a rumor. I don’t really know & haven’t heard confirmation one way or the other. Seemed a little over a HC/AD pay grade to decide facility usage. But, I may be wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time.

Late January. Groundbreaking was January 13. Of course, hurricane season will have a lot to do with the schedule as the school complex is less than a tenth of a mile from the bay. That’s also part of the expense. Much tougher building codes—which equals cost. It was sorely needed. Old Bulldog wouldn’t pass inspections any more. Plus, being able to host events should help with some of the maintenance budget costs. I wish they’d have been able to buy out the strip center next to the stadium for parking. But, my understanding is the owners wouldn’t sell at this time.

Construction was slated for 18 months. May/June of 2025 anticipated.

Ha! La Porte Slicers are in Indiana I believe. May want to hold off on the kudos for those graphics.

Yep. Bowed out to the State semi finalist in a game that was closer than the score indicated with a young team that hadn’t been to the PO’s in many years and a second year staff. Y’all had a good draw. If LP would learn to use their big soph TE on intermediate passes this coming year 3 or 4 times a game, it would help keep D’s from stacking the box. Just a little flip over the LB’s, and that next level is wide open.
-
Y’all said BH had one of your best teams last year. You lost some good talent. Y’all are still 0fer against La Porte, and the Dawgs will be in the 3rd year of the staff with—depending on how they count the starters since LP rotates so much—8 returning on O & 7 on D. Every matchup is different of course. But, BH would stand less of a chance this year than last, and Eagle Stadium isn’t an edge against LP. 😂

You know what LP returns. Might be the other way around. 😜 I think the PNG game will be interesting.
-
PAM, Angleton, then who? Who would you put above La Porte & Friendswood?
-
Actually think La Porte, Friendswood & KP would all make PO’s in District 9 as well. PAM would probably be the other. BH and KP might duke it out for 4th.
