  1. surprised three or four accounts haven't come out of retirement to keep this thread going. I guess the original attempt to turn it in a certain direction didn't get enough of a response this time.
  2. It's a lack of diversity combined with a lack of community interest/support. A good coach could improve the interest and support, but not the diversity.
  3. Yes. Their soccer team is 23-0-1, and at the regional tournament right now, despite having to compete against a higher classification. That team is so talented they can basically coach themselves.
  4. Nope, it's the athletes (or lack there of). Yes, EC has a better coach, but I assure you if they swap coaches tomorrow, Tarkington still won't beat EC over the next 7 years (unless Tarkington finds a new source of players). For that matter, if Briles took over Tarkington tomorrow, HE isn't good enough to bridge that gap without finding some extra players. Now, to be fair, he might get some transfers based on his name. There's zero doubt that if you had a 6'6'', 325 lb 15yo son who ran a 4.8 forty, you'd uproot and move to tarkington next week for your son to play there if Briles took the job. I'm sure there are others that are just as fanatic about him, which is a weird dynamic of his being ostracized (fairly, in most folks' opinion). I could definitely see some of the better players from the immediate surrounding area moving in, which would certainly help, but nowhere near enough to make them a serious contender for anything much further than a bi-district win.
  5. Indonesian principal who raped at least 13 students sentenced to death (msn.com)
  6. About one of the suspects: Martin was freed from an Arizona prison in 2020 after serving just over 1 1/2 years for violating probation in separate cases involving a felony conviction for aggravated assault in 2016 and a conviction on a marijuana charge in 2018. Court records show he pleaded guilty to punching, kicking and choking a woman in a hotel room when she refused to work for him as a prostitute.
  7. It happened in a state with some of the strictest gun laws in the country. This is obviously the result of a fight between two idiots with guns, not a targeted mass shooting. I'd bet the mortgage that both of the shooters have multiple previous arrests, but were let off lightly due to Cali's soft approach on criminals. There's also a high likelihood that they're convicted felons who were already breaking gun laws by possessing guns of any kind, and yet for some reason the laws didn't stop them.
  8. They were great coaches who took existing talent and won with it. you're ignoring the fact that there were already athletes and talent in place. you continually try to compare that situation to places that lack both.
  9. what everyone (but you) has been saying, is that coaching, athletes, and community support all play a role. That said, the athletes are the most important piece of the puzzle, and there are breaking points in both directions. there's a point where a team can be so stacked with athletes that even a mediocre coach can win with them, and also a team can be so devoid of athletes that even an elite coach can't make them a consistent winner. Can great coaching improve a team? absolutely. Can great coaching turn a team that wins 1-2 games a year and has a tiny athlete pool into a state championship contender in 7 years? absolutely not, although they could probably turn them into a .500 team that flirts with a playoff win every few years, based on the coaching ability alone. Now, if that great coach starts to build things up, and a population explosion (or dubious transfer policies) bring in a lot of quality athletes, then yes, they can become a contender, but once again, that's all dependent on having the athletes.
  10. agree with most of this, but both parties are "the side of government corruption." one just happens to align with my personal/political views more than the other.
  11. even the schools with the worst facilities have practice fields. I graduated from HJ in 2001 and we had three places we could practice soccer to avoid the game field. In fact, we never practiced on the game field, and neither did the football team. During football season i would go practice place kicking on the game field most days, and nobody else used it until friday night.
  12. He has a very strict "if you didn't win the state championship then your season was a failure" rule, so by his standards Stephenville and Tarkington were exactly the same until Briles took over. But your point is completely correct.
  13. the only arbitrary thing here is your intentionally (at least I hope so, for your sake) obtuse interpretation of both the site rules and my response. you: coaches aren't supposed to be bashed, but this disgraced college coach gets bashed all the time on here. me: the rule applies to local high school coaches and players. you: well, this college coach coached two years of high school 5 hours away, and sometimes people who don't know anything talk about him coaching locally. You guys don't follow your own rules.
  14. West Brook 1 Clear Falls 0
  15. Predictions: Lumberton 6, Columbia 0. Bay City 6, HJ 1. West Brook 1, Clear Falls 1 (WB wins in a shootout) East Chambers 3, Columbia 1
  16. Did I miss anyone?
  17. Girls: Lumberton (18-3-1) vs. Columbia (13-11-1). Lumberton has advanced by defeating Splendora 8-0 and Needville 7-0. Columbia defeated Houston Washington 7-0 and Vidor 2-1. Hardin Jefferson (21-3) vs. Bay City (25-1-1). HJ has advanced by defeating Hamshire Fannett 6-1 and Brazosport 4-1. Bay City defeated Houston North Forest 16-0 and LCM 8-1. 18. realistically, I think for many it's not about who's most deserving, but who's name will most upset a certain group of people, no matter how crooked he was.
  19. Court document paints disturbing picture of events surrounding teenage girl's murder | KFDM This article has the cliffsnotes version of the case.
  20. The story says "updated", and I don't see it anymore. wild story
  21. The difference is almost like playing two different sports.
  22. You know one thing that I think has changed more than anything is the internet and social media letting us know about all of these horrible cases, and if anything the advancement in LEO technology has discouraged some crime. I think there were probably just as many cases back then, we just never heard of them. I think if news coverage and social media was available back then like it is now, not nearly so many people would've been comfortable leaving their doors unlocked or letting their kids play outside alone. Serial killers in the 60s-70s-80s were killing large amounts of victims and nobody ever even heard about it, and even when there was biological evidence there was often little to no way to connect it to the killer.
  23. Suspect in murder of Jefferson County teen arrested in Williamson County | KFDM The arrest affidavit is including in the article, and the details of this case are pretty mindblowing. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see this case end up on Discovery ID at some point.
  24. I played a couple of years of soccer at ETBU, and had a blast! You're absolutely correct that D3 is a great option for kids without offers who'd like to continue their playing experience a few years.
  25. Turf is good for football, but I absolutely hate it for soccer. The turf puts unnatural spin on the ball and the bounces are ridiculous. There really is nothing better than a nice grass field for soccer. I know this is a football thread, but just thought I'd make the point.
