  1. i honestly hope so, but if they're lumped into the local 4A district, it's going to be awhile.
  2. the reason i said what i said was that you were using a 9-1 lumberton team who had a breakout year, thus causing a swelling of community pride, to justify letting teams into the playoffs with 3-7 or 4-6 records... i don't believe your intent was to disrespect lumberton, but i also don't believe that what happened in lumberton will happen if some team gets into the playoffs with a losing record. i just don't see a team that goes 3-7 and makes the playoffs making a big splash in the local community. there just aren't enough competitive districts to justify having four teams make the playoffs.
  3. wouldn't be too difficult if you kept the scores of the games...
  4. sorry aggie, didn't mean to plagiarize your post there... i honestly typed this before i realized that you were quoting tiger rather than posting that yourself... i guess i need to read more before i reply. anyway, i guess great minds think alike, as we both basically said the same thing
  5. tiger, i think you're insulting lumberton a little bit by using them as a point in the post. they earned their playoff spot with stellar play in district, and once they got to the playoffs, they made their opportunity count. the town of lumberton was buzzing because they made the playoffs, but moreso because they went 9-1 in the regular season to get there. do you honestly think that a team that goes 3-7 and makes the playoff is going to set their town on fire with excitement?
  6. yeah, i agree with you, to a point. some local players drive that far to play, but most of the players who travel to play are playing at a competitive level. they got good enough to compete on a blue or gold team (or whatever they call them these days) by playing in local leagues. a player with no experience isn't going to be good enough to make a competitive team, and most of their parents aren't going to drive anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours to play in a rec league. in towns like lumberton, beaumont, nederland etc, soccer is a big sport, and many kids start playing at a young age. in smaller towns out towards the country, there are less opportunities to play, and more emphasis on the "bigger sports" such as football, baseball, and basketball. not only will BC have less kids to choose from to play due to their much smaller enrollment, they'll also have few experienced soccer players on their team. just about any kid that has lived in the BC district who's family is really serious soccer will have already moved to play for a district that has had a team, and in the future, many will probably move to a district that fields a team that can compete. the problem for bridge city is that they'll probably be fielding a team with a few real soccer players, some players who played a long time ago when they were 9, and a few athletes who are just playing for fun. when they run into nederland, lumberton, png, central, vidor, and even silsbee who are playing 11 starters who've all played for 10 years, the gap is immense. maybe after a season or two they'll be competitive with HJ, WOS, and Ozen, but even those teams should have an advantage over bridge city to start. I'm excited for them that they're getting a team, and i'm glad that soccer is slowly spreading, but until we get a 3A playoff system, it's going to be tough sledding for 3A soccer programs that aren't in close proximity to a major city with easily accessible leagues. Expect a lot of 10-0 results to start out.
  7. hey, i agree with coop! oh wait, i thought this thread was about the cowboys... i don't like the 4 team playoff system either ;D. if you're going to have 4 teams from a district go, forget 8 team districts... make it 10 or 12!
  8. i don't know if i'd trust coaches to be fair... say bad officiating helps the home team, and then you get a good review from the home team's coach, and a bad review from the visiting coach. you're also going to get coaches who take out their anger over one or two bad calls by giving a bad review for the whole game. instead, maybe there should be an official in the stands every district game to keep tabs... i know this would be very expensive, but fairness in HS sporting events is worth the price.
  9. i'm not too much of a rocket fan, but i hate the spurs, so GREAT JOB ROCKETS! as far as i'm concerned, they can move the spurs to canada or overseas or something.
  10. You guys are making some good points... i definitely agree that if the cards start winning more games, they'll get more fans. i also agree that they need more kids going crazy in the stands, as this will boost team morale and help the cards get the wins they need. since the basketball team hasn't been all that great for several years, lamar needs to give fans some reasons to come back, and for this to happen, they have to start winning games. push a little more money through the program, pick up better recruits, and win. that's about the only way it's going to happen. i would say that the university could spend some extra money on promotionals and entertainment at the game to get fans in, but i personally would prefer them to feed that money into the program. this year held a lot of promise, but it started out badly. maybe now that LU is starting to pull it together the fans will start trickling back in. a conference championship would go a long way towards boosting attendance (and i asked for a trip to the big dance for lamar when i sat on santa's lap at the mall).
  11. i believe the one before was funnier, though. i think it was called roger clemens 2056. does anyone remember that one?
  12. yup... but baylor's looking like they're going to be able to beat most of the middle of the pack in the big 12, and surely the bottom feeders. that ought to get them another 6-7 wins pretty easily if they keep it up...
  13. i'm glad to see them doing well... if they keep this up it's going to be hard to keep them out of the big dance.
  14. i was more upset about the blatant blown call that gave UNC the ball back with a chance to win... it should've been maryland's ball with 10 seconds left anyway.
  15. they're gonna get beat up pretty bad. it's tough for schools with no quality youth soccer leagues close to home. Hopefully for them (and HJ) there will be a 3A playoff system soon. They'll be a little more competitive against smaller schools. It's tough when you get thrown into a district with 4 or 5 solid 4a schools.
  16. I'm a longhorn through and through, but over the past couple of seasons i've started following aggie basketball. i'd been really impressed with them all year, but they've looked awful their last two games. Tech smoked them, and then K-state pounded them again today. I believe they'll bounce back, but they need to make some changes. What do you think is going on with the aggies, and what changes do you think they need to make?
  17. great win for the brook! keep it up and bring the district championship home to beaumont!
